MC Prussian Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 FEED THE SMELTZ!!! New Zealand take a sensational lead against Italy.
Northants Fox 3 Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Incredible, although the commentaters reckon he was offside
Jimothy Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Brilliant start. Was offside as well so the Italian conspiracy theorist will be out in force again if they lose.
Tilley Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 What a strike that was! Unlucky not to score. Penalty to Italy.
Guest Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Penalty? Was it really? Sure there was a bit of shirt holding - but then agian every corner should be a peno if that's the case. Love the way the shirt is being held yet the Italian falls forward as though he's being pulled towards the touchline. Another reason for not having refs from all over the world at a world cup finals competition.
dandannieldanok Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 France, England and Italy have been an embarrassment representing Europe so far.
Cat Burger Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 I still think they looked a cut above England. Paston and Nelsen had to be on top form to deny them, you can't really say that about our opposition.
FoxyPV Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Well done New Zealand - thoroughly deserved point. I feel they were cheated for the penalty and showed Italy to be completely lacking in ideas. This WC is finally shaping up to be quite interesting.
The Doctor Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 very soft penalty for the italians. T'was technically a foul but you rarely if ever see them given. New zealand perhaps should have had a penalty when chellini caught reid in the face during the second half.
Koke Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 I still think they looked a cut above England. Paston and Nelsen had to be on top form to deny them, you can't really say that about our opposition. Algeria are a much better side than New Zealand though tbf.
Guest Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 France, England and Italy have been an embarrassment representing Europe so far. Don't forget Spain! Seems strange - makes me think that it has something to do with the ball - all the possession that the Italians just had and no goal (other than from the penalty spot) doesn't seem possible. Could be Africa, vuvuzela's, refs, grass, long season etc... but the ball seems the most likely.
MC Prussian Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Was a good game and New Zealand was very resilient, always had about 9, 10 players in their own half. Good, unconventional defensive, rugby-like display which left the Italians clueless. Chris Wood's shot a beauty but it would've been a bit unfair if that one would have gone in. Rory Fallon was a bit of a **** on the pitch today, getting away with all those elbow checks in the first (Chiellini followed the example with some bald moves of his own in the second half, though). Much more impressed by Paston's goalkeeping skills. Still, even if Italy join France and England with only two points out of two games, they very much more convincing going forward, showed they wanted a winning goal and should not be written off yet - something I can't say about the other two "major" footballing forces.
Brainy Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 World Champions drew v team ranked 80 something. England drew v team ranked 30 something. have a word with yourself. not quite sure how Italy performed, but on paper the result looks worse for Italy than it did for England.
Guest Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 Italy did play much better but they didn't score did they? They didn't play any better than we played against the US. France are simply in complete disarray and shouldn't be in the same conversation. Maybe Spain can give false hope against Honduras.

Maybe Spain can give false hope against Honduras. they did. it finished 1-1 and italy were much better than england were against the US - the amount of times italy were denied by a combination of the keeper and ryan nelsen probably about outweighs the amount of shots england have had in the entire world cup.
Guest Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 A penalty!!! questionable. Did you see the shirt pull on Drogba in this evening's game much worse and nothing. I think you're just England hating
The Doctor Posted 20 June 2010 Posted 20 June 2010 A penalty!!! questionable. Did you see the shirt pull on Drogba in this evening's game much worse and nothing. I think you're just England hating i did and at no point did i say that it was the correct desicion. now if we look at the match stats for englands two matches and the italy match today we can see that, suprisingly england had an attempt on goal in the algeria game (can't remember that at all), and so have had a couple more attempts over 2 games than italy had in 1. However Italy's stats in that match were slightly better that englands in either match, except possesion (V USA). Italy v New Zealand match stats England v USA match Stats England V Algeria Match Stats
JimmyK Posted 21 June 2010 Posted 21 June 2010 Real shame the game was on at 2am NZ time so anyone at work the following morning probably had to miss it. But despite being very annoyed with the manner of Italy's goal, people here are thrilled with the performances so far. In fact, the nz media's reaction to the two draws is probably the exact opposite of what I imagine the England media's has been for our two draws.

I hope those two results alone will help raising the profile of football in New Zealand tremendously. About time the All Whites step out of the shadow of Rugby. Now, all you've got to do is work on the technical abilities, further develop a youth academy set-up, get a few of your key players gain more experience in the leagues abroad and you can make it even further in four years time - you're no worse than Australia. Or let's put it that way: You are for 2010 what Australia were in 2006.
