Joe. Posted 5 August 2010 Posted 5 August 2010 Am I the only one who doesn't understand this? I've seen several people in the predictions thread putting them high up, almost instantly on the back of signing David James. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic capture for them. but will it really win them the league? Not sure whether anybody saw the article in the Express today, but there was a feature about them with Coppell revealing it was the most difficult pre-season he's ever had with any club. “I dread to think what my mobile phone bill is for the last few weeks because I have spent so much time on it chasing players. At my other clubs I have always tried to make pre-season a positive time, building confidence for the new campaign, but this one has been extremely tough. “We have switched shape in virtually every warm-up game and I’m still searching for the one that makes us most solid." Pre-season is obviously not the best gague for future success, but they lost to Torquay, Exeter and Aldershot. Bradley Orr, Paul hartley and Jamie McCombe have all left and Maynard, Haynes, Cisse, Nicky Hunt, Lewin Nyatanga, Louis Carey and Christian Ribeiro are all injured. Maynard's knee injury might need surgery, and without him for a while you know you have a big loss up front. There's plenty of time to put everything right and we all know Coppell is a top manager, but calls of a top two finish are a bit farfetched for me. It seems that all of a sudden since James' signing they've become promotion hopefuls overnight, which right now looks like a mere pipedream to me.
Webbo Posted 5 August 2010 Posted 5 August 2010 The city of Bristol is gripped by hope after it was suggested Michael Owen could become the second England international to join the the Robins this week.Npower Championship side Bristol City are keen to strengthen their forward line having dealt with their defensive issues with the capture of David James from Portsmouth. They originally had an approach for the loan of Danny Welbeck rebuffed by Manchester United but were shocked when they were told they could take Owen instead. Owen hasn't featured for United since injuring his hamstring in the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa in February. However he is expected to feature on Wednesday night against an Irish League XI at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The move would be one of the most surprising in Premier League history, especially with Owen still keen on resurrecting his international career. One post on a Bristol City fans forum said: 'Blimey I dont think Im [sic] going to make it to next Saturday my heart cant stand all of this' Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1300338/Manchester-United-striker-Michael-Owen-linked-loan-Bristol-City.html#ixzz0vlSUs9UO
Fox You Forest Posted 5 August 2010 Posted 5 August 2010 They've signed Sam Vokes on loan today, slight step down from Owen... I agree Joe, no idea what the fuss is about.
Joe. Posted 5 August 2010 Author Posted 5 August 2010 Bristol City will not get Michael Owen. Why on earth would he go to the Championship? He's earning about £60k a week at United, and if he was available there'd be several Premiership clubs in for him. It's not even like Bristol's remotely close to where he lives either.
Flynny Posted 5 August 2010 Posted 5 August 2010 A playoff-push, especially when they've got all their players back, would be reasonable. But yeah top two would be a surprise. James is a good head to have around in the changing room though. I'd love to see him manage, he seems like a top bloke.
dandannieldanok Posted 6 August 2010 Posted 6 August 2010 I can't see them doing that much better than last season, although they'll probably improve a bit. Apart from James, they've not signed anyone groundbreaking, just added mediocre players to an already mediocre squad. Their biggest asset is Steve Coppell by a country mile. I'm prepared to eat my words when come May they've inevitably proved me completely wrong as usual, but it would be surprising in my opinion if they had any more than a brief and passing glimpse at the play-offs.
Corky Posted 12 August 2010 Posted 12 August 2010 I was one of the people who thought they would have a great season, do a Blackpool if you like, mainly down to the manager in place. Now my prediction could look very silly indeed
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 12 August 2010 Posted 12 August 2010 The wheels have come off this bandwagon!
SystonFox Posted 12 August 2010 Posted 12 August 2010 They dicked us at home last season and I bet they do this term regardless of manager/David James in goal
