Weale

Well people were asking for names of better goalies, even Bristol City had one.

People, not me.

Lots of teams have better keepers, doesn't mean we should blow what little money we have on someone marginally better, especially when there are other areas in dire need of money being spent on it.

For 90% of last season he was more than good enough.

The criticism of Weale is a joke.

I don't claim to know the in's and outs of goalkeeping but i've played in goal for a team for 4 years now and IMO it's the hardest position on the field. As a keeper if you make 1, just 1 big error, it is usually remembered for a long time and you are judged for it for a long time too. I don't care how good a goalkeeper is, they will make mistakes. Weale has been reliable for us, he made 1 big error that I can think of towards the end of last season but look at Casillas at the World Cup... He was getting criticsed at one point for looking shakey. Yet he is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, Weale did nothing wrong against Palace I can tell you that much. I heard a few people saying he should have done better for their 2nd goal but in my eyes that was nonsense. Ambrose's shot was curled IN towards goal with the outside of the boot, hit the post and went in... 9 out of 10 times a keeper would not have saved that shot.

Also... You could have the best keeper in the world between the sticks but if the defence is poor then he will still concede quite a few goals. I rate David James highly, yeh so he has made high profile errors in his career but he has made far more great saves than he has mistakes. Bristol City still lost 3-0 on Saturday though, I don't think we should be pointing any fingers at Weale for the goals we conceded, we should be pointing them at the defence as a whole.

Exactly, we have issues in defence, with wingers and with strikers. Lets sort that out eh?

In your opinion and everyone has one of those.

We may have some money to spend, so why not look at improving the whole squad, Logan for me isn't that good if he can't get ahead of Weale, so let's get a better goalie and put Weale on the bench, if he isn't happy, tough.

We have a short period until the transfer deadline, I'd like to get in as many good players as quickly as possible.

And the award for stating the blindingly obvious goes to..............

Weale is a good solid keeper. Even Ian Walker went through a shit patch. It also takes another 10 players to stop the ball getting past them until we need to call on Weale. He'll pull through.

I agree.

In my opinion though.. on Saturday even if we had someone like Casillas or Buffon in goal... We still would have conceded those 3 goals because of the defensive errors.

You're right about Logan, he is awful. Oh hang on he saved a penalty against Boro must be good!

We need a right back, 2 wingers and 2 forwards before we even start to think about a keeper. If one becomes available then fine but I will argue until the cows come home there are more pressing areas of the squad to be replaced.

That added to this thread, thanks.

You're welcome. :D

Exactly, Ian Walker was solid for us when we got promoted in 2002-2003, went through a patch where he made a few mistakes but then went back to being solid and reliable.

If a keepers confidence is low it can severely affect them. Confidence is absolutely massive as a keeper, if a keeper isn't feeling confident then it can be the difference between them coming out and claiming a cross or backing out of it, staying on their line and getting beaten by a header from 6 yards out. We need to show support for Weale, if we started to get on his back it would do him and us no favours at all.

He has all the attributes to be an established Premier League keeper. He is very much like Fulop IMO. Tall.. Strong... Good shot shopping, good kicking, good at coming out and being commanding at crosses. He is 28, still pretty young for a keeper.

Did ok in the league against us a few years ago. Then again, we do have Steve Howard and maybe this Crncic is his replacement?

Anyway, I was just answering a point mate someone asked earlier after we've been arguing about whether we should go out and buy another keeper for Chris for at least 2 hours now?

I said, McGregor @ Rangers would be a top buy. Alteratively, De Vries at Swansea / Basso at Bristol or Turnbull @ Chelsea - latter obviously money permitting!

De Vries, if we signed him... With that name alone he would get criticised and called a donkey before he set foot on the pitch lol

I honestly don't see how you can compare Walker & Weale or even Fulop.

And Weale's kicking and general distribution is surely nothing to write home about (I'm being generous there, very generous).

And it his Coming out and being commanding at crosses that has worried me for some time now.

They weren't good before, and other mistakes on top of that mean that he is not a premier league goalie and I don't think he has the makings of one either.

Well we're not in the premier league, and we currently don't have the money to buy a premier league keeper. So however much people dislike Chris Weale, the fact of the matter is that unless something drastic happens, he'll be our number 1 for the rest of this season and possibly a few more seasons on top of that.

Ever thought that maybe they weren't? Maybe his agent is angling for a new deal.

Or it is just the usual bullshit, made up story that you get in the papers during the summer and they have nothing else to write about.

Read the post again, it was in rely to Andy believing that he had all the attributes to be a PL player.

As for funds, have you not heard about the takeover, I believe that comes under the heading 'drastic'.

Whatever it was it is certainly true that no Premier League team have made a bid for him.
