Stig the Lawnmower Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 Following the recent 'spot fixing' betting scandal in cricket, I was browsing through the Steve Claridge interview in the Fox 2009 summer special when I read this;- '..... there's an interesting thing about Iwan. A couple of the players were trying to work a bit of a scam on throw-ins straight after kick offs. They would bet on a throw in the first minute or something. A certain player aimed the ball out for a throw but Iwan went up to head it, got clattered by a defender and broke a rib. He missed the play-offs. Iwan was out there trying to make it look real, somebody under hit the ball instead of over hitting it and poor old Iwan was out for the rest of the season.' Funny, it never really clicked with me the first time I read it, but match betting was obviously rife then, as it probably is now. What if Iwans absence had cost us? Call the police
easilee Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I wonder if referees have a similar scam going.
Zingari Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I can't understand the mentality of bookmakers being prepared to take bets on stuff like this , Surely they must realise it's a recipe for corruption , ok bets on the first scorer , result etc fine , but stuff like throw ins etc is just ludicrous
Matt Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I wonder if referees have a similar scam going. Stuart Attwell surely?! The amount of fuck up's and match changing fuck up's he makes surely not all of them can be genuine 'mistakes'.
FoxyPV Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I can't remember if was John Hartson or Robbie Fowler - but they must have had a bet on first throw in as they took the kick off and booted it straight into the crowd I can't remember anything major being done about it though.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I can't remember if was John Hartson or Robbie Fowler - but they must have had a bet on first throw in as they took the kick off and booted it straight into the crowd I can't remember anything major being done about it though. I do beleive a fair number of teams were doing it, because it seemed to be a lot of teams standard kick off routine at the time - however there was a 'betting scandal' a few years ago which was supposed to have tightened this area up. I do believe you can't even bet on yourself to score now?
HampshireFox Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I've had the misfortune to read Matt Le Tissier's autobiogrophy and he basically admits to doing the same for Southampton in the 90's
poopbutt Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 considering how little they get paid it's not surprising they have to do stuff like this to supplement their meagre income
Guest BlueBrett Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 Happened in Dream Team I loved that shit! When I was a kid I used to think that bird from it who is now in corrie was really fit
Jimothy Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I loved that shit! When I was a kid I used to think that bird from it who is now in corrie was really fit Alison King? Useless fact, she's from Leicester.
Jordan Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 considering how little they get paid it's not surprising they have to do stuff like this to supplement their meagre income I think they'd do it now because they just like to gamble. The amount of money that changes hands in a poker game on a flight back from an England game is about equal to the gross national product of Slovenia, but not for want. No surprise, unfortunately, that it was Steve Claridge who seemed to know a lot about this.
poopbutt Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 claridge bet his house on a poker game in portsmouth
Captain... Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 I can't remember if was John Hartson or Robbie Fowler - but they must have had a bet on first throw in as they took the kick off and booted it straight into the crowd I can't remember anything major being done about it though. I remember one with Paul Kitson playing for West Ham, it was so blatant, and I think something was done about it after that to stop people betting on such things. There didn't seem to be much fuss about it at the time, but I guess with cricket a no ball or a wide gives the other team points, whereas Leicester always give the ball away at the kick off so it doesn't really matter how. By the way, under Sousa do we still chip the ball in to the corner after every kick off or do we actually try and play it around a bit?
somebum Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 To me, its a non brainer that football is fixed.
Father Ted Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 Le Tissier said that he did it but as he went to kick the ball out of play, Marlon Beresford just kept in!
Joe. Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 Le Tissier said that he did it but as he went to kick the ball out of play, Marlon Beresford just kept in! It was Neil Shipperley I'm sure, he had no idea about the bet so he just kept it in.
Father Ted Posted 18 September 2010 Posted 18 September 2010 It was Neil Shipperley I'm sure, he had no idea about the bet so he just kept it in. Yes, it was Shipperley, sorry.
