brief comparison to last year

Why do I keep reading that we "overachieved" last season?

Sounds like a poor excuse for Sousa's failings. And more importantly it doesn't give Pearson the credit he deserves.

It's quite hard to over achieve over the course of a 46 game season. And how many of those people claiming that can honestly say they would have been happy with anything other than play offs or automatic promotion this season if Pearson had stayed.

We didn't over achieve. We had a great manager, stability, a good work ethic, fit confident players, high morale and an effective approach. Now we have none of that.

we did overacheive last year..

when we got promoted most people would have been looking at a mid table finish to steady ourselves back in this league. back to back promotions wouldnt have been on peoples minds if there honest and so to just miss out on it was higher than what people would have expected...

You're talking about expectations. Exceeding expectations isn't the same as over achieving.

Defence.

The new management haven't got a defensive mentality and it's all gone to pieces. an NP team would never have conceded so many goals. Sousa is all fluff and no substance.

Maybe because Pearson was a defender himself?

i believe we over achieved last year in much the same way we are underachieving so far this year,

Last year we picked up points in games that i think we really didnt "deserve" (i accept that you can say you only get what you deserve, but lucky breaks and ref decisions can make a difference). and therefore finished higher than we should have

This year, we have missed out on points that i think we "deserved" and therefore find ourselves lower than we should be.

And... im sure there are myriad threads from the last few years complaining about our hoofball boring games, PS is trying to change that and has us in the main, playing stylish quality football creating chances and shots..it takes time.

This is another thing that's annoying me on here at the minute. People keep referring to Pearson's football as hoofball. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Leicester play last season. It was often a delight to see the team working hard, playing with passion, being well organised and winning effectively. But also playing pretty decent football a lot of the time. Of course there were bad moments and occasional hoofball, but we had just been promoted from League One for fuck's sake, you have to play ugly sometimes.

The myth that Pearson was some long ball merchant and our games were boring needs to be exposed as just that... a myth.

Apart from the odd 45 mins of decent football we've hardly rewrote the footballing manual in comparison to last season have we?

You can play pretty tap tap across the middle of the park footy all day long....if you dont create where it counts then you are no better than just hoofing it up!!!

TBF i think we have created more chances than anyone else in the league this year, we have just failed to put them away.

totally agree with this, i cant believe there are actually people out there who would prefer to watch a 30 pass move which ends up going back to your own keeper, rather than a 4 pass move which creates a shot and hopefully a goal.

i'm not even remotely comparing ourselves to barca, but if you have watched their games so far this season, they are obviously playing the passing game they usually do, but the difference in the last game or two is that they havent been scoring or shooting on target as much as last season and you can hear the discontent from the crowd. they are just as displeased with beautiful footie that has no end product, and that is in a league where this type of football is seen more often.

to think that we need to entirely change our style of football is totally wrong. Wigan are a good example of trying to play more european style and getting no product. the only teams you see playing like this are generally top half premier league sides. you dont even need to play like that in the premier league to stay up there and beat some of the top half teams. if you've got a rock solid defence (like we seemed to have last season) then you're within half a chance of giving teams like Arsenal or Man City a decent scare imo.

Pearson played nice football, i dont imagine there were many goals we scored from route one were there?? if so i must have blinked and missed that. i thought there were lots of times we played it through, just not with 20 bloody passes building up to it!

Absolutely.

The main difference, for me, is the defence. Last season we weren't prolific scorers, but we were strong at the back, so it led to close matches, several of which went in our favour.

The main reason for that , ayne Brown not withstanding is as Marbella Dave pointed out they are having to think about what they should be doing rather than going on ingrained gut instinct and it's making them subject to hesitation and errors.

Sousa did try and get in a more suitable CB but failed so he needs to decide quickly does he persevere in the short term, until he can either improve the current defenders or get better ones in thus risking further errors with his passing from the back or does he bite the bullet and say play your natural game and the midfield/forwards will have to adapt and try to turn the inevitable hoofs into a passing game further up field.

Not that I saw that much passing in the Portsmouth game but then we were a midfielder short.
