And people were saying that if Filbert Street was still around, there'd be no chance of a name change.
Kitchandro Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 Sorry but I will never be on board with stadiums named after businesses. I didn't like the 'Walkers' as a name for that matter, but at least Walkers are a Leicester based company and sponsored the club for sometime before the stadium. But changing a stadium name is ridiculous, in 20 years it will be changed to something else I bet, it will never be a famous stadium no matter how successful we become because no one will remember the name of it. Everyone knows who plays at Anfield, Old Trafford - heck everyone knew who played at Filbert Street. But if the name keeps changing it jus becomes a joke, especially when it's a company I've never heard of. And why do some people think that we will be successful because we sell our soul? So what if we become richer, it doesn't mean we will be European Powerhouses. And I want to feel some kind of part of my club! I want the players to feel part of something like they did last year, that is why I enjoyed it so much and that is why we were successful! Of anything, THAT is why we overperformed, if you want to call it that, I'd prefer to call it punching above our weight. Do you think Man City players feel a rapport with their fans? Tey are there for no other reason but to collect their money and become famous. If they don't win anything in 3 years, many will want out. I want success as much as anyone but there are more important things, and in any case, changing the name of our stadium will make little difference in that sense. Stadium names should have a link to the clubs history/traditions, or where the ground is actually situated. I always thought it should be called Freeman's Park, as that is where it is. So I'm going to call it that from now on, and if anyone asks me where my team plays, that will be my answer.
Thracian Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 Why not name it after a sewing machine? The club's needed mending all season!
The Padster Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 I always thought it should be called Freeman's Park Wharf, as that is where it is. So I'm going to call it that from now on, and if anyone asks me where my team plays, that will be my answer.
Spudulike Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 I've only ever called it Freemen's Wharf (not Freeman's). Is that apostrophe in the right place ??
Kitchandro Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 I think it's both Freemans Park and Wharf. If you type in Wharf on Google you get Plymouth but if you type in Park you get Leicester. Don't think it has an apostrophe actually. I think Park sounds better than Wharf, but either is good.

It might not have an apostrophe but it's definately FreeMENS, not FreeMANS. The correct and best name for the stadium, I reckon, and it has to be Wharf. http://www.lcfc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10274~68476,00.html

Soz I didn't know that . I always just thought the whole area was the same name. So Freemans Park is where the Odeon is, and across the road where the stadium is is called Freemens Wharf? That's rather confusing!

Yup, that's about it. The industrial bit is Freemens Common.
davieG Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 Freemans Park is on the grounds of the old Leicester Cattle Market the name Freemens Park was derived from the fact that the whole area around there all the way into town was called Freemen's Common - http://www.leicester.../Southfield.htm Freeman's Wharf was land at the side of the end of Raw Dykes Road and Eastern Boulevard, both No Through Roads and was I believe where the coal for the Gas Works was unloaded from the canal, hence the 'Wharf'. When the stadium was first muted it was referred to as the Freeman's Wharf Stadium e.g The Independent: The go-ahead for the Foxes' new home rests upon results of precautionary contamination tests - the previous occupiers of the land were the electricity company Powergen - and also upon agreement with the club's shareholders. But Leicester officials expect the go-ahead to be given and hope to submit a planning application within four weeks. The Freeman's Wharf stadium should then be ready for the 2003 season, and possibly for 2002. http://www.independe...ove-624633.html Incidentally the Road that runs from Walnut Street to Aylestone Road, formally Eastern Boulevard into Raw Dykes Road is now wholly Raw Dykes Road. Filbert Way is just the little stretch off this leading to the gate house near the Club Shop. So if the Council/LCFC hadn't dreamt up the Filbert Way bit the Address for LCFC would be Freeman's Wharf, Raw Dykes Way, Leicester.

Kitchandro Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 http://www.lcfc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10274~70249,00.html That is the only link that it is Freemens, not Freemans. If you type in 'Freemens Wharf Leicester' on google it redirects the search to 'Freemans Wharf Leicester' and there are articles about the Walkers Stadium.
Kitchandro Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 Now that I think about it I'm not sure 'Wharf' sounds like a stadium. I also thought something like 'The Fosse Ground' would sound good.
davieG Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 http://www.lcfc.com/...4~70249,00.html Oops sorry about that finished it in a hurry.

The club tried to incorporate 'Fosse' when naming the South Stand (now the Kop ) as the Fosse Stand. It was conveniently ignored by the club in the name of sponsorship as was the North Stand (Lineker stand). I think that Freemans is used incorrectly as the original land was known as Freemens Common. 'Park' must be something quite recent http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/126377
ibbosuk Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 According to a poster on TB the Walkers will become the Singha from January 2011. http://www.talkingba...81&postcount=29 Ahh yes the name The Singha Stadium...... sounds like it will fit in well with the ethic culture of the city of Leicester. Rather like the temple at the end of my street…………..<_<

markbsac Posted 29 October 2010 Posted 29 October 2010 i can hear it now..."the sewing machine stadium"

CelebFox Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 The City Stadium was the official address for Filbert Street, and me like many others refered to it as Filbo We still have no official name anyway, Southampton at least have FP (St Mary's) So its off down to Filbo to watch Sven and the boys this afto
ibbosuk Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Get a job and pay some taxes - it'll make the temple at the end of your street annoy you less. I presume people work to provide themselves with money ? I wouldn't know, I am not in that kind of loop. I have my own money and dont need to rely on anybody else for income. But working and paying taxes must be a a bummer.
gazzer Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 i can hear it now..."the sewing machine stadium" It's Sing Ha not 'singer'. The 'H' is pronounced
