Celtic's Green Brigade

I'm usually a big fan of their group but that is disgraceful. Surely there were plenty of Irish and Irish-Scots who fought and died in the fight against fascism in WW2? The Poppy is a symbol of rememberance and not a glorification of present wars and past atrocities.

Horrible fooking fenian bastards. I hate celshit with a passion. This is a reason why, but if rangers fans had something like that about the pope, itd be a different story. WATP

Eh, it's retarded because they're a Scottish club with thousands of non-Irish, Scottish fans who they're likely alienating by protesting in such a way.

It's also hugely insensitive taking the "deeds you've done" route in contemporary politics. As much as I do think military atrocities are hardly a thing of the past, the average soldier in the field's just some lad doing a difficult job and certainly isn't deserving of the stick.

But that said, I can understand them not wanting the Poppy on the club's shirt. The club has always been closely attached to it's Irish republican roots and remembrance isn't really observed in Ireland the same way it is here. And given the the actions of our armed forces during the occupation, War of Independence and later The Troubles then quite frankly not only can I understand why but I also think it's somewhat inappropriate for us to be dismissive of their passion.

Well although I dont think the poppy should be a political symbol you have to admit theres a little more to it thesedays that simply a symbol of remberance. The poppy organisation still to this day refuse to put anything on the poppy that symbolizes peace, thats why people now where the white poppy, and those atrocities caused in northern ireland by british troops aren't going to be forgotten.

Add to that the unpopular wars in iraq and afghanistan you can see how some may not want to wear it or have it sold as they feel its disrespectful to people who have been affected.

I feel some of the responses about the protest aren't fully justified as they dont know the whole story.

I don't agree however with fans actually protesting inside the ground, they could have simply boycotted as they have before, to me they are a little hypocritical, they want there views to be heard but dont want others to decide whether they want to wear the poppy or not.

Why not wear a white poppy? I've always considered the red poppy to be an advocation of militarism. To wear a poppy over here is a loaded political statement and people can get very obtuse about the whole issue.

The Green Brigade are generally the best Ultras group in Britain but that is disgusting. Whoever decided that was a good idea should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for essentially spitting on the graves of some of their own. It remembers individual soldiers who were killed, maimed or survived to a world that didn't deserve them after the wars, it is not and has never been a glorification of the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan or even the Troubles. I often wonder how many of the Celtic fans who claim to hate the British Army with a passion actually have any political consciousness or whether they just come out with this kind of shit because they're The Rebel's Choice ©.

You forgot to say something about the damn Huns, you Fenian bastard.

Sorry.

Wearing a poppy makes you a fooking snout cunt and a member of the UDA.

Better?

I must say I'm not a fan of the Poppy Appeal's advertising campaign this year. Seem to want to guilt-trip people into wearing one "because it's Novemember and everyone will think I'm a treasonous twat if I don't." The Poppy should be a meaningful symbol of rememberance that people wear because they want to wear it, not because someone else tells them they should. No doubt the advertising exec who the paid to come up with it is eating well off the donations of the public though...

Haven't heard much about the white poppy? Never seen them on sale anywhere?

I don't see what business it is of the DUP.

Them getting involved just makes me more inclined to understand the GB's point in the first place.
