Bored of Howard being the scapegoat when we don't win.... is such a shame this is still even a topic :o

Have far bigger problems than this - Poor Centre Halfs, Lack Of A Leader, No Fryattesque Frontman, A Complete Lack Of Graft etc

Fairplay, i didnt see the game today, so who am i to piss and moan.....

January to be make or break for Svennis.... cmon lad :sge:

Well then you're not really listening to what I'm saying. I'm not looking to make him a scapegoat, several players played poorly for large parts of the game today. I'm just pointing out that I think he is one of a few problems we had today, but that he has been so consistently this season when he's played.

If you think its such a shame it's still a topic then do I assume you think he's been playing well?

Must agree with you ernie :lei1: , the man can only be used as an impact sub for last 10/15 minutes when needed to get the ball forward quick to play for flick on's when chasing a goal. My biggest concern is the lack of pace going forward, we only have Dyer who scares defences running at them, Vassell looks to be getting there but needs to play down the middle. Gallagher needs to start scoring from open play, he's had as many chances as anybody else and would be above King as leading scorer if he could hit the net with a moving ball..!

Anyway lets see what the next two games bring and see where we are when the transfer window opens and hopefully make a real push up the table in 2011,...

Merry Christmas :santa: to the Blue Army,.... :scarf:

Very good post from the OP on Steve Howard, sums up what I've been saying for a while - I agree entirely. Same with Jehst a bit later on.

I dispute the whole "passion" argument, mind. He's a natural competitive, aggressive person on the field which comes across as him giving a shit. But I'd dispute how much of a shit he really gives given how frequently he completely drifts out of games. Having a competitive streak doesn't mean you love the club.

As much as he's a pantomime villain wherever he is, Robbie Savage is a classic example of someone who "gives a shit." Never stops running, never fails to be committed and determined, bags of energy despite being a bit of a donkey out of the blocks. Might act the mercenary when he leaves your club for the next but whatever shirt he's playing in he plays like it's his boyhood heroes.

Howard's just occasionally angry and frequently tired.

In some ways I disagree with that. I remember us scoring earlier in the season and Yuki was just going back to our half but King grabbed him and told him to come over, get him involved with the team. I think he does a lot of little things that do make him a pretty good leader, just not in the traditional sense.

Glad you brought that up, bud'. Agree entirely - pulling Waghorn's shirt back on ( :giggle: ) was another one. And he'll mature and grow in to the role the longer it's given to him.

He could also be seen pointing and instructing when defending corners, not that it helped much as I think Leeds got a head to most of them first.

I'm far too lazy to find a picture of Andy Johnson pointing and instructing.

Nonsense topic.

Howard is still a good player and can add a lot to the team.

However, he is getting older and is less mobile than he was and also I'm not sure he really suits the lone striker role as he isn't going to contribute enough goals to be our main scoring threat.

What is the perfect use for him is brining him on with 25-30 mins to go when the defenders are getting tired and letting him bully them about a little bit, win the ball up front, cause chaos and confusion and create chances for others.

I kind of agree that he shouldn't really be starting but to suggest he can't contribute anything at all and we should be shipping him out is just plain wrong.

Howard is GOOD at what he does he holds the ball up and lays it off and scores a few. FACT! Hes played like that for his whole life.

Hes getting old now and its starting to show but give him a break lads come on, theres lads out on the pitch 20yrs old. Hes not going to say to sven am to old and slow now so dont bother picking me is he?

I don't know if you're watching the same matches, because SH is NOT good at what he does! Not at all! As Ernie correctly identified at the start of this thread is that; he doesn't win nearly enough in the air for his size and stature, his touch is awful and so he slows down the play far too often and is therefore ineffective at laying the ball off, and finaly, his finshing is terrible. Not exactly the greatest attributes for a target man. To top it off, he's scored one solitary goal from open play this season.

I never actually suggested we should get rid of him, so "nonsense topic" is a bit foolish! And as far as "can add a lot to the team" goes, I've got no idea how you come to that conclusion. He does us more harm than good 90% of the time, unless we are just desperate for a goal and pumping balls into the box.

If we want to keep him and bring him on for the last 10/15 mins when we're losing and the opposition are keeping every man behind the ball, fine. He wouldn't be my choice, but its a more reasonable use of him.

I'm just frustrated that so many fans who don't really seem to understand how the game works think he's doing a good job as a main striker.

Steve Howards been around for years as you should no but probably NOT seen as your stupid. Ask any player in any other team in the championship whos our danger man they will say howard because hes good at what he does. He is old now though and like i said its starting to show. Howard always backs in to people and plays for the fowls off the goal kicks hes done it everywhere he been you'll never change that. So stop saying the blokes shit look what he did against leeds at there place and derby at home this season.

I think Gallagher is far more frustrating. Granted he scores cracking penos and can sometimes provide a moment of brilliance, but for the majority of the time going forward he stops the play progressing by putting his boot on the ball or try some fancy tricks. Case in point would be yestersay at the death when he should have just crossed the ball rather than pissing about and loosing possesion.

What an unbelievably ridiculous statement!! Howard's our danger man? The only team he's a danger to is us! I think most clubs would look at King, Dyer, Vassell, Gallagher, or even Bednar before him. All they need to do with Howard is put their biggest man on him, tell him to go in hard on him and beat him in the air, and thats Howard taken out of any equation.

And as for him backing into people and playing for the fouls, thats exactly one of my points in the original post, thats sh*t football. Much better to have a player on who helps us play good football and create our own chances, not taking scraps from the opposition. If you're of the opinion that playing for the foul's is an appropriate style of play for getting the club to where we want to be, then I don't think anyone will be able to talk any sense into you anyway.

I fully realise playing ugly is necessary occasionally, but its certainly not the ethos Sven wants to build the team on, and so should only be a last resort. You're right we're never going to change that about him, which is why he shouldn't play regularly, so we can move on as a better team.

No its not a appropriate way of playing football i agree. But like i said in my first post whats he going to do go see sven and say i dont want to play anymore am getting to old for this and i'm not good enough etc. NO hes not. So its not his fault he gets picked so get off his back and get on svens because he obviously thinks he can do a job and keeps picking him.

Noones saying svens a shit manager because he keeps picking Howard are they?

Howard was great in his day but seen as hes getting old now it doesnt show as much now. But hes not shit and its not his fault he keeps getting pick so just think about the bloke that picks him.

I don't really think you seem to understand what I'm saying. I'm not asking who's fault it is, or whether Sven is being a bad manager for picking him, or whether Howard should go and tell Sven he's got sh*t. I'm just saying why I think Howard is crap and the effect that has on the team.

It would seem that in truth you actually agree with this, given you think he's "had his day". But you clearly think its much more fun and clever to just argue against it anyway. Either that or you too are one of the numpties who've fallen in love with his fist clenching and shouting.

Not particularly a HOWARD fan but as long as he pulls on the Blue shirt of Leicester City we should cheer him on :scarf:

Sure. I've never booed a player of ours or wished badly for them.

I just hope he's replaced sooner rather than later because he (as most of our strike force) represent an obvious weakness in our squad. As I've just said elsewhere on a different topic, football isn't a sport with room for sentiment. Ship him out if he isn't good enough, we should always be improving.

I have never booed one of our players and hopefully never will, i do think Howard can be a passenger for certain games but Sven is playing him because we do not really have any big strikers apart from the recently loaned bednar..

I just got back from todays game, and cannot understand why Steve Howard plays, tbh I think he's awful! And what frustrates me even more is that it seems like some of the fans with half a brain cell seem to think he's decent!! All they seem to see is him clenching his fists, shouting a bit and getting angry, and think that means he's committed to the cause, and start waxing lyrical about him. If they actually stopped just looking at him, and watching the game, they'd see he's completely sh*t!

Heres why I think he is shocking:

1. When we move the ball forward to Howard (high, low, or however), he takes it OK (some of the time!), and lays it off to a winger/midfielder. Half the fans seem to think thats excellent! Its really not. Its only the first part of what he needs to be doing. Once he lays it off, he needs to then get himself into the box to get on the end of any cross etc that results. Howard is so immobile he doesn't do this, so there's no one in the box, and the fans then either blame the winger for crossing it in, or someone else. All they know is, Howard really did his job well!!!

2. He is actually holding us back because he changes the way we play. When he is on the field, it seems like half the other players think "Oh, Steves there, I'll just hoof it forward". If he then wins it, some of the fans think that was good play. Bollocks. Sven has had us playing some nice fluid football at times, and this completely goes against this. Now I fully realise that this is not directly Howards fault, the other players need to adjust. But while that isn't happening, he is just preventing us from playing decent football, and there are players that would facilitate better football much more easily.

3. His first touch is shocking! When we play the ball up to him directly/quickly, his touch often takes the ball 5/6 yards away from him! Thats just crap in itself.!

4. For a striker, tbh his finishing is very poor.

5. Given his size, I don't actually think he wins as much in the air as he really should.

It just annoys me that some fans sing his praises, when they don't really have any proper reason for thinking he's good, just that "he's committed" and "he gives his all".

I wondered what other peoples opinions were?

I totally agree with you.
