Richie Wellens

Sven said opn the radio that there were no problems with him, he wanted to rest him.

Gallagher had some pain from last game and felt it when he shot the penalty, so he was subbed not to get more injured.

We don't have that many midfielders, we need some backup so it's quite understandable that he doesn't want to risk Wellens hor is our engine in the team at the moment.

To Gally and Wellens credit, you could see the difference in creativity when they had gone off. Two very key players for our playoff push.

agreed wellens is one hell of a player! Moussa did well when he came on I thought! And waggy lescott could handle his strength.

Sven is turning Wellens and Gallagher in to quality players in my opinion. Both have been exceptional in the past 6 weeks. Although I have watched most games pissed out of my face in Thailand for 4 of those, so please excuse me.

Maybe the Wellens critics will realise his importance to our team with his departure in yesterday's game.

Fingers crossed...

Likewise with Gally, we keep the ball so much better with them both in the side.

I thought the loss of Gallagher was by far the more important change, it made a huge difference to our play going forward and more surprisingly to the solidity of our left flank in defence.

Our midfield has considerable 'slack', by that I mean we have several players who all pretty much do the same job. With Wellens off, Abe stepped forward and took a more agressive, attacking roll, even playing Dyer in for his goal, in general he compensated for Wellens' absence pretty well, whereas Moussa did not come close to replacing Gallagher.

Agreed, I've been saying that more and more this season he's becoming a very important player for us. I've not seen every game and I have had a few moans about him but I've usually been more impressed with him than people on here give him credit for.

He brings a balance to our attack and is a creative outlet where as Lloyd offers a direct outlet. I think this works well for us and I just wish he could put in the defensive performances in the league that he has against Man City.

Defensively Gallagher is a strange player, last night he was excellent, tracking back and hustling Johnson when he was clean through on Weale was exceptional, your (nominal) left winger helping to save a goal by covering behind his center backs, outstanding...:appl:

He covered Berner very well too, we sure saw the difference when he came off!

Last season, in a couple of games, he deputised in a central position for Wellens and did very well indeed, defensively as well as going forward. He needs to be given more responsibility (a central role maybe?), and told to get stuck in, still feel he could be pivotal for us.

We certainly missed Gallagher, as dave said Abe took up the Wellens role so we didn't feel his loss too much.

Agreed, however, although Abe managed to cover wellens departure somewhat, Oakley certainly wasnt a good replacement for Abe in the holding role (he did ok, but certainly not the same gravy) and like dave said the biggest difference was Moussa/gally switch.

Credit to the team for rallying and putting pressure on Man city late in the second half. But the difference in the midfield was very apparent.

I believe another central midfielder in the Wellens mould would benefit us greatly, creative but with fire and fight.

I feel ashamed to say I didn't get to see us much last season :P

What sort of role in what formation was he playing when he moved off the flank? I still feel he plays the role he's in at the moment very well.

When he tracked Johnson back, that was insane :S I thought it was him, couldn't believe it could be then the camera zoomed in :o Mare defensively but fair play to him.

Started in the Newcastle game at the Walkers, Pearson was just making the change from 4-4-fooking-2 to 4-3-3/4-5-1 but in the early games it was more 4-3-3. Wellens got himself sent off so Gallagher slotted into the advanced playmaker role with (I think) Oakley and King playing deeper. He was exellent both in attack and defense against a very strong Newcastle midfield.

So good that he kept that role for our next game away, can't remember who, against a top team (West Brom?) we did well and again Gallagher was excellent. The folowing week Wellens was back from suspension and that was that.

Thought he was really worth a run in that position and now that he is playing even better...:dunno:

If we had a top quality left mid/winger, then as i've said before, I would like to see him centrally at some point. If that were the case then i'd be tempted to use Wellens + King/Abe. Not sure Abe is always essential against teams with weaker midfields but that doesn't seem to matter this season, we can dominate a strong midfield then lose out to a poorer, more physical one :S

Wellens has looked great driving from deep recently though, he's starting to thrive when he's allowed to run with the ball in space, even against outfits like man city.

I don't usually see what Gallagher brings to the team, but since the new year, his importance for us has been huge. And I love his penalties :D

I've not been Gallaghers biggest fan in the past and there are still times he can be frustrating but he really has improved his all round game and as last night proved is one of our most important players now!
