Collymore Posted 7 June 2005 Posted 7 June 2005 The 22-year-old Leicester City defender, who appeared for Ireland's under-21s on Friday, has been promoted to the full squad because of Andy O'Brien's dismissal in the 2-2 draw with Israel and the withdrawal through injury of Tottenham's Robbie Keane and Steve Finnan of Liverpool. McCarthy has already enjoyed a taste of football with the Ireland squad. He joined them for training two weeks ago and went on as a second-half substitute during Jackie McNamara's testimonial. McCarthy and City teammate Alan Sheehan played the full 90 minutes for Ireland's under-21s in their 2-2 draw with Israel. Meanwhile, Irish manager Brian Kerr has insisted second place in Group Four is not an option as he still has his sights set on automatic qualification for next summer's finals. Saturday's deflating home draw with Israel means that the fight is on for the squad to simply make the top two. But, as far as Kerr is concerned, nothing less than winning the group will do. Scotland keeper Craig Gordon is convinced he and his teammates can get the better of Belarus tomorrow and catapult themselves back into World Cup contention. The Scots can move ahead of their hosts by winning in the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, a result that would put them in fourth place but just a point behind Norway and Slovenia. The Hearts keeper said: "It will be very difficult but, if we want to get back in it, we have to win. We have a chance and if we get three points it will catapult us into contention." Germany kicked off theirEuropean Women's title defence with a 1-0 win over Norway in Warrington last night. France secured a 3-1 win over Italy. England meet Denmark at Ewood Park tomorrow night. Well done Paddy

connolly19 Posted 8 June 2005 Posted 8 June 2005 He deserves it! Im still not sure why Stuart Pearce did not put up much of a fight for him if he knew he would get the chance to become manager soon!

Scow Posted 8 June 2005 Posted 8 June 2005 He deserves it! Im still not sure why Stuart Pearce did not put up much of a fight for him if he knew he would get the chance to become manager soon! 120982[/snapback] I don't think he did know - Keegan was expected to leave at the end of next season, and I'm sure McCarthy wouldn't have waited that long to see if a first team opportunity was a possibility.
EmLeee Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 how dare they not play him! i watched the entire game for nothing
Ric Flair Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 Keegan was very foolish, he promised McCarthy first team football the season that has just gone and turned down some bigger offers than we put in for him. The he decided to give some other reserve lads a chance and not Paddy so he pissed off, fair play to him. Keegan is a numpty though, McCarthy will turn out to be a right bargain. Same with Hughes, how McLeish can be allowed to let him go for £100,000 i'll never know. Some of them sweaties are right fools.
