ageconcernkeith Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Hi everyone.. Im here representing a lovely old man called Bill, who often talks about Leicester City and Filbert St and I get the impression he was a Foxes supporter for many years. He now lives in a care home adjoining Streatham Common, which is in south London. I see Bill once a week as an Age Concern (now called AgeUk) volunteer. He never married and has no children, so he doesnt really get visits. He is 85 and has Alzheimers Disease, so his short term memory has completely gone, but his long term recall is still quite good. I see him once a week and take him a Daily Mirror and we do word puzzles or play draughts for an hour or two. I am going to ask you guys for some help to put a big smile on Bills face. I would like to find someone who has some old duplicate Filbert Street programmes that they would be willing to let me borrow and I'll take them along to Bill. I have a feeling this will help me find out when he used to go to games, who he went with and what his memories are. Just half a dozen to begin with and if it really stirs up some memories, maybe we could dig out some more. I will guarantee to return them and be very careful and I would want to pay for all postage or any damage. If you know anyone who has old programmes, please let me know, I am very happy to supply my phone number or email address, or contact them if you can put me in touch. Thanks for reading this. Haydos Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Can't help you i'm afraid mate but I'm sure there's plenty on here that can. Commendable thing that you're doing though, good luck.

Keith Hallam Befriending Volunteer Age Uk, Lambeth Good on you. I have some old programmes somewhere but I might need them myself in a few years You might want to try this forum most of the fans are lot older than on here and quite a few of them actually live in London. http://www.fansonline.net/leicestercity/mb/index.php All the best.
jonthefox Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Just a thought here, but have you tried the book 'of fossils and foxes'.? This book has all the information on every game, players and scores etc, as well as photos of filbo (filbert street). Good luck with your efforts mate, and be sure to post back and let us know how it went.
AoWW Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 A really commendable thing that you're doing Keith. Unfortunately I'm unable to help with programmes but I hope someone's able to help you out. jonthefox's suggestion re the book 'Of Fossils and Foxes' is a good one Link here but unfortunately there aren't really any cheap copies on Amazon at the moment - they do come up from time to time, though. I don't know if the club would be able to help at all - depends on how generously-spirited they are, I guess? I can't remember the email address to contact them but I'm sure someone else on here might be on hand with the info. Good luck.

Used to have some from the early 80s, but Mum and Dad have ferreted them away in their house somewhere we know not. Ask him about Howard Riley. And I'll do AoWW's detective work for her. She's a little slow and finds navigating the interweb confusing and upsetting . You can contact Leicester City on several email addresses, but the ones that might be most fruitful are [email protected] or [email protected] (that's the Football in the Community address). I'd also suggest contacting Leicester Mercury the local paper. There's definitely a human interest story here and they might put your plea further afield than you can manage here. Contact them at [email protected] or [email protected] Hope this helps!

harpendenfox Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 I think I have some from the late 70s / early 80s. Would that era be of any help? If so please let me have your address and I'll put a few in the post. It'd be great to think they might give Bill a few bright moments.

Keith Hallam Befriending Volunteer Age Uk, Lambeth Firstly Keith what an amazing gesture, my grandad has alzhiemers and his memory is completely gone. He remembers a few things and often rambles about stuff in his past. It's a truly horrible condition, watching him deteriorate was perhaps harder than dealing with a death imo. I wish that there was something i could offer, but being 23 means i have little to offer, i have couple of recent programs, '96ish onwards if thats any help? Personally i wouldn't like to part company with loads of them, but this is something close to my heart and would be comfortable sending a few. Matt.
Guest Bilo Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 First off Keith, what a wonderful gesture. It's fantastic to see someone like yourself caring for a man in his twilight years and really restores my faith in human nature, so thanks for a great post. In terms of getting old match programmes, you could do a lot worse than contacting the club historian. The club keeps programmes going back at least to the 1950s and possibly further back, my housemate has been writing a dissertation on fan culture at LCFC and has been using some as part of his research, and they're in pretty good nick. I'm sure if you e-mailed the club they would be able to set some aside for you. Failing that, get onto Bentley's Roof forum and ask around there as DavieG has already said. Best of luck to you and all the best to Bill.
Petchy Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Absolutely fantastic idea Keith, I hope it all goes well.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 I don't have any programmes but I think I may have a copy of the afore mentioned Foxes & Fossils book (not 100% sure as I haven't poked around in the attic for a while). Let me know if you're interested in that and I'll have a search. Great thing you're doing

broughtonblue Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 My grandad is 91 and his memory is pretty good, if you have any questions please ask/pm me and I will ask him for the answers. I recently bought him a book called 'football the war years' detailing what all the pro footballers of the time (1939-1945) did during the war, if It might be of use to you let me know. Keep up the good work.
