docho66 Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Two points. Firstly there is no guarantee that any of our loan players will return next season either permenantly or on loan. The better ones, Naughton, Vitor etc will go to Premier league clubs here or abroad, as most likely will Yakubu. Ben Mee looks like a good fit but I am not holding my breath as I think others will be interested in him. Hopefully the Chelsea 'starlets' will not return. Secondly you include our three regular midfield players as likely starters, it is here that I disagree most strongly! While decent enough players, the combination is lightweight in all areas, no defensive steel, nothing like creative enough going forward and King apart no goal threat. As I have said many times before this combination is routinely rolled over by the better teams, during our great run, after the turn of the year, we were flattered by the poor quality of the opposition, mostly teams from the lower half. As soon as we came up against better sides in march they folded, our inexperienced back 4 was exposed and our positive form disapeared. The same midfield will get us no-where, only one of the three regulars should get a start, depending somewhat on who we get in. Yes, i fully agree with you. This is fully backed up by Sven's recent interview where he stated that the whole team were to blame for the lack-sure defence that cost us a playoff spot! Think about it, King and Wellens are the only two midfielders who provided us with anything great! I think King will keep his place, Sven knows the quality of King can be exploited whilst amongst higher class players. We need to find strong defensive midfielders to provide support to the back four. Abe is a good player but doesn't really add a greater dimension to the team. I hope politics doesn't interfere with Sven's selection or transfers, because i can see Abe being used as he is our only S.E Asian player... maybe there will be a Thailand international signing soon!?

Politics / marketing apart, we need two new, more dominating midfielders, one defensive orientated and one creative. Either a no nonsense streetfighter like (say) John Henry or a more rounded but still dominant player like (say) Scott Dans would be my priority, depending on who we get I would partner them with either King or Wellens, whichever form the best pairing. They would need to provide defensive cover for the back 4, essential if as seems likely Sven is going to continue with attacking full backs. In front of them we need a creative type who can dominate when we have the ball, someone like Danny Murphy would be ideal. (probably has a couple more seasons at the the top level though...) Fixing the midfield is the number one priority in my view, well that and a new keeper anyway....

Scott Dann is Birminghams Centre half. Id like Jonas Olsson to come in at centre half, good leadership qualitys and a horrible bastard to play against. Out of contract too i beleive. As for a keeper i remain a fan of David Stockdale at Fulham

Still at least you knew who I meant, which shows I was thinking of the right players. Don't know Jonas Olsson, I'll look him up. Have you seen him play and can he play on the left? Something of a bugbear of mine, but we really need someone to play on that side, I think that is really important.
marbelladave Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 About Jonas Olsson..... Looked him up, now I remember. West Brom site suggests he is under contract for a couple more years, shame as he is left sided..........
foxaholic Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Another load of speculative bollox, I have read similar posts so many times over the last few weeks. So, a dose of reality, several doses in fact. Who, of our contracted players are definite starters nest season? Just 2, Bamba and King! Decent chance of a regular starting place? Wellens, Gallagher and Vassel. Fringe/squad players who might force there way in after a good pre-season? Parkes, Hobbs, Abe, Waghorn and Schlupp. Even assuming the all make it to the match day squad (highly unlikely) that means we still need around 8 players, most likely about ten, there is no guarantee any of our successful loan players will be here next season, so it will be a very busy close season indeed. We need. A starting keeper, possibly a backup too. Two starting fullbacks, backup for both and at least two center backs, if Hobbs leaves make that three! A proper, experienced defensive midfield player, preferably a leader and a really hard core player, plus a genuinely creative midfielder who unlike our current players can do the job against the better teams. A good pacy winger/wide man who can actually deliver what Dyer hints at but fails to provide, a proven goalscorer would be nice but Yakubu or any similar players will be too expensive, so expect a player from the championship/league 1. Why no mention of Tunshev a certain starter in many eyes if not yours A really tough job all round, Good luck Sven!
Christoph Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Well said. Rowley_LCFC Stop bumming Waghorn you twat clearly not good enough. Yakubu,Kamara and Vassell are miles better. Haha chill out

Yuki Abe with a new defensive midfielder will be where the team will be based. We will also have a number of the young loanees back, one way or another, and they too will not have as many 'starts' next season as they did this. I also think one or two players will be brought in from European leagues, with mature and proven specialist defenders and strikers, such as maybe Heskey and Owen or at least that type of quality. We will be going for promotion, no holds barred, not just hoping for it. I do believe that most our regular first team from last season will be kept, but half will end up on the bench.

I like the Idea of King rather than Abe playing deeper, much as he did under NFS partnered by a 'new defensive midfielder'. Yuki Abe is an all action option but he can be a bit lightweight and is not particularly good when required to sit in front of the back 4. You suggest we will get back some of this seasons loan player but there is no evidence to suggest that this is anything other than wishful thinking. Naughton, Vitor, Yakubu and perhaps even Mee will have plenty of options given the good showing last seson, we will be lucky to get any of them. I have no real idea of what Sven's specific targets will be, we have all heard the rumours but I suspect his real targets will be kept vey quiet. Personally I would like to see us sign 5-6 players with a decent mix of class, experience and hunger, add a couple of loans. One thing I do not want to see are players like Heskey or Owen, not at all what is needed in my view.

If we have a '3' then you can only really afford to allow one of them to be 'attacking' and given more of a free role. I really want this to be King but at the same time I think Wellens benefits the team. I think when it comes down to it Wellens will need to be replaced. with an enforcer type and Abe given some of Wellens duties (ball carrier). This way, Yuki's workload would be shared with a more defence minded player and he could concentrate a bit more on moving the ball on rather than making the 5 yard pass to nearest man. It also allows us to keep the threat of King going forward. I don't know what others think but with this setup I believe King could be 'carried' somewhat with regards to physicality in the middle, allowing him to concentrate on what he has been doing for us this season.
