shanevans Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 Hey guys...displaced Leicester fan from the States here who is more of a forums reader than writer...though sports journalism is my trade (Goal.com, to be exact). Anyway, I'm not big into betting or odds or any of that but I was just wondering why we're being considered favorites for next season? Isn't half our team from last year loan players? Wasn't our goalkeeping pretty awful? I know the money helps and all that but we hardly have a full side together at the moment. I like the core of our team (Wellens, King, Gallagher, etc) but can we legitimately contend for automatic promotion next year? I appreciate the responses ahead of time. Love that new kit, too. Cheers!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 God knows why we're joint favourites. We have a skeleton of a team as opposed to a full body. Presumably the bookies are basing it on what sven managed to do last season, plus as you said, the potential investment from the owners this summer. Stupid bet though and would be a right waste of money
Uncle Phil Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 Because we're expected to spend millions, sign everyone and then blitz the league I guess.

We have about as a good chance as anyone in the league with the investement that is being pumped into the club. Although, obviously our squad isn't good enough yet but with the signings Sven will make I think we will be very strong.
sdb Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 I certainly wouldn't bet on us going up at the mo. With the squad we've got (excluding loanees of course) we'd do well to finish top 10
The Year Of The Fox Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 Its all ifs and buts concerning new players. I'll believe it when I see it
purpleronnie Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 Who knows I assume its because we went on a great run last year and the fact sven has apparantly lots of dosh to spend. I'd lay leicester off.
morris1234 Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 well how many people thought norwich would gain promotion and do it well. Its Not always about the talent you have in your side its how they work as a unit. worthy of the favourite tag i dont know, but especially now some of our 'promotion rivals' (birmingham, forest, cardiff) arent as stable with the loss of.very good managers, i think its going to be a very exciting season!

Our position as favourites (while pretty meaningless in the middle of June) suddenly looks a lot rosier with Davies and McLeish leaving Forest and B'ham respectively. Sure, managerial departures can be positive (Allardyce for Grant at WHU) but it'll take some recovery for these two clubs. And why was Cardiff included? Is Jones also leaving or was that more to do with Chopra?

gazfox9 Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 I think its more to do with the profile of the club. Any side with a manager of the calibre of Sven, coupled with the financial backing of being able to bring in players like Yakubu, are always going to be amongst the bookies favourites......and they're never usually that far wrong!!!!
Bert Posted 12 June 2011 Posted 12 June 2011 Money to spend and highest profile manager outside any top flight.
bmt Posted 13 June 2011 Posted 13 June 2011 Has anyone had a bet on it yet? Usually I think it would be too soon but I think we'll soon have an influx of top quality players so the odds may not get any better. I finished last season like £100+ positive from football betting so I may put 50 on us going up and spend the rest on other things.
purpleronnie Posted 13 June 2011 Posted 13 June 2011 I think laying them off not to win the league would be the smart bet.
danlcfc4ever Posted 13 June 2011 Posted 13 June 2011 Jesus!! Doom and gloom or what... just what you need on a grey Monday morning.

Spot on gaz... This IS why we are favourites and the bookies are rarely wrong... That's why they are bookies... For me, to bet on city would be risky at present, particularly at 7-1, as there is 'no meat on the bones' so to speak. My money remains on brum or west ham, probably the latter IMO. If any bet was made on leicesters chances with the squad we have NOW, we'd be looking at us finishing mid table at best I would say
Charl91 Posted 13 June 2011 Posted 13 June 2011 Why exactly would it be a right waste of money? We have about as a good chance as anyone in the league with the investement that is being pumped into the club. Which is why it would be a waste of money at the moment. Why go for awful odds if you're no more likely to win then any other team!
