muzzy1981 Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Sven wants competition for every position on the park. Kasper / Weale Peltier / ?? SSL / Tunch Bamba / ?? Masiela / Berner Abe/Oakley Wellens /Danns King / ?? Gallly / Vassel Waghorne / ?? ?? / ?? Plenty more to sign IMO. I know we have many more players in the squad who could come through this season, but we need strength in depth to go up. I would love to Mills sign and Vitor and Mee back on loan to bolster the defence. Need to get strikers in fairly soon so they can get a good pre-season.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 I think our midfield is going to be great this season, we have lots of quality players who will see us through the season.
Haydos Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Howard's still here. Might be one of the 4 strikers. Vassell is also versatile.
sdb Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Missed Howard. Also we have plenty of CM's so King doesn't need back up there. Hopefully Mills, Maynard and Nugent/Derbyshire come in. Then we just need some danger men down the flanks.... hmmm
lc4lcfc Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 i think i agree mills and nugent would be brilliant, main striker and winger needed, be interesting to see whether we sign another midfieder (is it necessary?) or another right back
PeterTaylorsApprentice Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Definately keep Howard, every team needs a target man, he still popped up with five goals last season!
hackneyfox Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Howard, 5 goals in 38 appearances, and yes I know most of those were from the bench, but personally the sooner he goes the better. I don't count Berner as cover either, or Oakley, not for a season.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Howard, 5 goals in 38 appearances, and yes I know most of those were from the bench, but personally the sooner he goes the better. I don't count Berner as cover either, or Oakley, not for a season. IMO Oakley can still do a job, as we saw with a couple of goals towards the end of last season. He still provides good cover for a tired midfielder like Wellens, Abe, King or Danns.
hackneyfox Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Agree but as I said 'not for a season', I just think we need someone else as well.
artursteppe Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Definately keep Howard, every team needs a target man, he still popped up with five goals last season! So pray tell me who is the equivalent of Howard at Barcelona, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, even Newcastle, Sunderland, Peterborough, Burton Albion and on and on and on. I think there are about a dozen teams in the whole country who actually do use someone like Howard.
cc_star Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Oakley is a good player, who's more than capable. As is Berner, however we all know Berner won't be happy with a place on the bench because it will affect his international aims for 2012, so we need a sub RB & LB IMO At the back we obviously need a class signing to take us from just outside the playoffs to above them Does anyone know if our Eng U-19 defender Taft, is ready for a place in the matchday squad? I think we're ably covered in the middle We just need a new first teamer or two, upfront, with Waghorn Vassell & Schlupp providing ample quality backup, although I think waggy will be seeking first team football for fear of his career stagnating
muzzy1981 Posted 5 July 2011 Author Posted 5 July 2011 Sorry I should have explained I am in the really don't rate Howard category, yes I think all squads should have a target man but I'd rather one that can head and shoot. Oakley can still do a job IMO as back-up .
cc_star Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 So pray tell me who is the equivalent of Howard at Barcelona, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, even Newcastle, Sunderland, Peterborough, Burton Albion and on and on and on. I think there are about a dozen teams in the whole country who actually do use someone like Howard. Loads of teams use a man to hold the ball up, watch Rooney for details Of course the modern holding-up player has a few more strings to their bow than a big target-man, but its the holding the ball up & laying it off that's important, particularly to come off the bench & hold on to a lead
Fox92 Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 So pray tell me who is the equivalent of Howard at Barcelona, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, even Newcastle, Sunderland, Peterborough, Burton Albion and on and on and on. I think there are about a dozen teams in the whole country who actually do use someone like Howard. I think most sides have target players that hold up the ball. Adebayor played for Real Madrid last season and is quite good at that, Berbatov holds the ball up for Manchester United, as does Drogba at Chelsea. Both Chamack and Bendtner are big men even though Arsenal play football etc etc I personally love Howard. His ability may have dropped, but his passion is still there. We do need another type of Howard though in my opnion because he does seem to struggle with 90 minutes once/twice every week now. Howard is the type of player you need in games such as against Manchester City in the FA Cup where the opposition defence needs ruffing up abit, and although target men differ, for instance Drogba has alot of pace as well, they are essential to any club from Barcelona down to Burton Albion in holding the ball up when defending a lead.
Topman Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Might get shot saying this, but I prefer Yann than Howard
ScouseFox Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 We have 5 central midfielders, as well as Bamba, Peltier and Gallagher who've played there before. I think we should be looking at other areas before signing any other CMs unless they are significantly better than what we have.
sdb Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Berner, Howard and Oakley are excellent cover imo. A dozen games a season, perfect.
muzzy1981 Posted 5 July 2011 Author Posted 5 July 2011 Might get shot saying this, but I prefer Yann than Howard Couldn't agree more. Incredible that Wooney, Berbatov and Drogba are being talked about in the same vain as Howard. I have watched Howard come on enough times now and not change a game, yes he's a good lad but we need more than that to go up. Anyways not getting into the same old Howard arguements!
artursteppe Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 So pray tell me who is the equivalent of Howard at Barcelona, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, even Newcastle, Sunderland, Peterborough, Burton Albion and on and on and on. I think there are about a dozen teams in the whole country who actually do use someone like Howard. Like I said, who has got a player like Howard, not who has a striker who can hold the ball and distribute it. Rooney, and Drogba are footballers, Howard isn't!
drc Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Schlupp is the dark horse. He can play as a winger and a striker. Hopefylly ha can be there and fight for his right to party.
Haydos Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 So pray tell me who is the equivalent of Howard at Barcelona, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, even Newcastle, Sunderland, Peterborough, Burton Albion and on and on and on. I think there are about a dozen teams in the whole country who actually do use someone like Howard. Used to be Ibra for Barca, Berba at Man U, Bendtner at Arsenal, Drogba at Chelsea, Adebayor at Real, Carrol was at newcastle, Jones was at Sunderland.
Christoph Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Yeh, whats with the hate on Target men. Me loves a bit of huff ball to a target man, flick on to a faster striker and bing bang up ya mam
lc4lcfc Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 well apparently nugent is finally signing today or tomorrow (check his thread for source) bring in mills a winger, full back and striker please sven
