I reckon its genetics, we're a nervous people.

Been trying to work it out for years....closest I have come is we seem to be a nation of losers. Attitude from school seems to be "its the taking part that counts" etc etc It isnt, if winning isnt important why do they keep score?

No doubt now be seen as "brave". When actually, it wasnt brave, it was bottling.

England's keeper is a complete loon. She's good though.

Really? I would have said if anything that she was at fault big time in the shoot out. She moved ridiculously early on every kick and you could see after the third French penalty onwards they basically waited for her too move and just slotted it in the opposite corner. It was farcical really, I means she was moving the second they started the run up.

On the whole I've been surprised at the standard of play during the world cup, with the exception of the keepers, who have generally been pretty poor.

Oh and it was also obvious, when we sent up a 20yr old winning her 5th cap for the 4th kick that she was gonna miss, you cant tell me she should have been taking that kick over some of the more considerably experienced players on the team.

In all fairness I posted that as the shootout was starting. In the bits of the game I watched she claimed everything, commanded her area and her defence and wasn't scared to dive at people's feet is she saw it necessary. Yes, in the shootout she got it a bit wrong, but I'd assume she had to gamble one way or the other, as if she waited to see where it was going, she'd have not got near it. It worked for the first one, just not the rest.

That's a little harsh we win plenty of things its just football dominates sport in britain and unfortunately we have 'choked' when it counts.

There is a different attitude to sport in britain than elsewhere, the 'taking part that counts' and 'fair play' do seem more prominent here than in other countries. And we are known as 'good losers' and also we have been known to actually celebrate losers which is something quite unique.

Of course she has to gamble and pick a side like all keepers do but she was doing it far far too early. It was comical really. Although to be fair she did seem to command her area well.

all i can say is its a shame we went out on pnos, probably deserved over the whole match, but womens football is coming on leaps and bounds and finally damn some of those french girls are hot!! gorgeous and play football, if they can cook then they are ideal woman!!!!!

Still, it could be worse. We could have been the tournament favorites and playing on home soil and lost in a huge upset. lol

Credit to Japan, a great result for them, especially as we beat them quite comfortably in midweek.

And left footed, they always miss. fact.

Standard was shockingly bad I thought, obviously the game wasn't going to be as quick as the man's game, but the positioning was awful, And considering how slow it was, you would think this wouldn't be an issue.

And they say women are as clever as men, not on that showing, positional awareness was poor...

England women's coach Hope Powell accused her team of "cowardice" after she struggled to find volunteers for the World Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out against France.

Claire Rafferty, a 22-year-old full-back who had come on after 80 minutes to make her World Cup debut, and Faye White missed the fourth and fifth penalties respectively to seal England's exit and Powell was furious at the overall lack of courage shown by her players.

She told The Guardian: "Three times I had to ask before anyone stepped forward. 'Where are you?' I was thinking, and then a young kid (Rafferty) is the first to put her hand up. And Kelly Smith was dying on her feet but she stepped up and took one. You've got to want to take a penalty, but other players should have come forward and they didn't. That's weak, it's cowardice."

Why do keepers at any level 'pick a side' with pens? A well struck & accurate pen, anything finding close to top/bottom corner with pace, is going to beat almost any keeper, even if they guess right. 'Make' them hit a good pen to beat you.

Disappointing game, we were totally outplayed.

I think you answer your own question?

If you dont pick and move... they can hit a poor peno and still score... its only one shot down the middle you will have covered.

I kind of meant the opposite - i've always thought more poor pens are scored because a keeper picks and moves. If a penalty kick lacks any great accuracy or power the keeper should have enough time to react and save it from 12 yards. That's the whole point of not picking and moving, you shouldn't get beaten by a less than decent spot kick. It's still a gamble, just one that sometimes at least makes more sense to me, especially in a nervous shootout situation. If i was facing a random Stevie Gerrard pen i probably would just pick a side.

I'm surprised at powells comments and if anything it makes her look like a very inept coach. At the very least they should have discussed penalties in preparation for the game and even if they didn't practice them they should of at least had a list of possible takers ready. Asking for volunteers at the end of extra time and subsequently complaining about the response, just shows poor preparation on her part.
