Will you miss being small...

Hello there and good morning.

I was encouraged in to writing this post by that bit of my brain which makes me do things. You know, the bit that at night says "Tomorrow you should do all of the things you have been meaning to so but have not done. You can change your life tomorrow and be a better man! Go forth and take over this puny world". Now usually in the morning the other bit of your brain kicks in and says "just five more minutes then a nice cup of tea then ignore that loser last night, you're good as you are brave warrior!". Not this time though, this time the active part won over though it wasn't at night when it started talking to me. No, I was urged into writing this post whilst taking my morning wee (I am so regular I think I have diabetes [seriously, I'm scared]). So there I was with my tiny, tiny little penis in my hand taking my usual three and half minute tiddle when it hit me! Just as I've been teased all my life (amongst a myriad of other things) for my AA battery-a-like wongdangler so Leicester have been teased by my friends for being "a little club". It got me thinking, will part of me be sad if we become a big club? Is being smaller part of who we are?

Well to decide I asked my friend Johnny "some men are born lucky, others very lucky and I was born a tripod" McHunterberry to see if he would like to have been a "smaller club". "No, no I wouldn't, of course not you little cretin. Now please leave me alone and don't strike up a conversation at the urinal again you strange and insane idiot" was his reply. So then I thought oh just fvck it then! Yeah, I wanna be a big club!

Serious note though, is there any part of you that takes pride in the fact that we are a "smaller club" who has punched above our weight at times? Will it ruin it if we just spend spend spend? And don't think I'm being negative, I couldn't care if we spent our way to the Champions League, in fact I would do a poo inside my own spleen to get there. I have no pride. Just wondered if any fellow foxes would be a bit lost if we suddenly became a big club?

Cheers.

When have we ever punched above our weight. We're the 10th (arguably) largest City in England with a decent county wide catchment area, we've never won the FA Cup or the top league which many cities of our size have done on more than one occasion, I'd say historically we've been punching below our weight.

When we were performing comfortably in the top League and getting to the Cup Final in the 60s I never felt we were punching above our weight in fact it felt extremely comfortable. Football has always been cyclic teams come and go in terms of success but there's no logical reason why we shouldn't fit or look comfortable in the top half, say 8 to 12 slots of the PL.

Yes we are a big city but you would be deluding yourself if you genuinely thought we were a big club. We are not in the top twenty biggest football clubs in England surely? I might be wrong but surely you cannot think that? Thus, when we have had top 10 finishes and won league cups I feel we have outdone ourselves? I may be wrong but I don't think so. Wasn't having a go at us but was just wondering whether people like us being the underdogs at times?

Whether we're one of the top 20 or not depends on the criteria your using for measuring it. I don't want to get into a debate about who is bigger than who but I see no reason why we can't and shouldn't be in that top 20.

So based on performances and results no we probably aren't that's why I said if anything for a club of our size and potential we've generally under performed.

In the early 60's we were a result /injury or two away from doing the double, if, and I know it's a big if we'd have achieved that would we still be seen as over achieving by getting into the PL?

By the way I'm not deluded or offended by your view/response.

I don't think we would be punching above our weight to be in the Pl but to be challenging for Europe (which I understand is the aim) I feel we would surely be outdoing ourselves? I want it as much as anyone part of me also likes being the underdog and getting a result against the moneybags big boys! Anyway, my post was pretty tongue in cheek to begin with just wondered what others thought? X

Regardless of the number, we're lower than we should be thanks to chronic under-achievement throughout our history, could be worse though - we could be York

When Little took the club that avoided relegation by a goal to permanent fixture near the top of the table & finally promotion it felt like we'd come home, that era set the tone for what followed and the O'Neil success.

Did the O'Neil years feel beyond us? I felt & still do feel that mid-table Prem with the occasional cup win is where we belong.

Of course they did not feel beyond us but your argument kind of proves my point. The fact that we all still wet our pants over a few top ten finishes and League Cup wins kind of proves we are not a big club? X

Wouldnt be lost but its definately more fun being a yoyo club, the ups and downs of the 1990's were the best time in my life to support the club.

Wont feel the same being promoted this year as it was under MON or even Adams as it will feel more like we have bought it that earnt it but that appears to be football now.

I agree with DavieG to be honest, when you look at size of city we should be a comfortable top flight team.

I agree and that's why i feel that as a club we've under achieved, the top end of mid-table and a Cup win gets you into Europe so that again is why I don't see as over achieving if we got into Europe we'd be just fulfilling our potential.

Well having lived through and attending regularly through the 60's I never wet my pants over O'Neil's achievements exciting as they were they seemed like we were back where we belonged. I guess it depends to some extent on the success you've witness throughout your supporting years. Anyone who started watching us post O'Neil will have witnessed very little success and might see us as being small-time but then I believe during that period we were vastly under-performing.

I think it depends on what type of fan you are.

Do you want to be a big fish in a little pond?

Or could you cope being a little fish in a big pond?

The two mindsets are completely different.

It's hard watching yourself in a relegation fight being outclassed every week and takes a special type of football person to see the good aspects of watching those sort of performances each week. History tells us that fan bases become impatient and fickle, setting unrealistic benchmarks for a side of footballers often worth collectively the value of the oppositions star player.

it's much easier to want to stay a big fish in a little pond - to be a football romantic, enjoy the victories, talk about 'honest' football, visiting traditional away grounds where you can stand and reminisce when players had day jobs as green-grocers and a local man owned the football club without two pennies to rub together nurturing home grown talent.

I guess you pick which fan you'de like to be or accept that if you feel both ways it's unlikely you'll ever be happy.

Not that i'm happy with the current state of football but external money has always played a part in the success of clubs certainly during my years. It may have been local businessmen running the clubs but they were still required to pump money into them it's just that they didn't have to pay the exorbitant wages that now exist

I know what I will miss if we go up and the likes of Man U and Liverpool come to town, being able to move on the concourse at half time and not having to wait for 40 mins to get out of the car park

I only meant this thread as a bit of a giggle. I am currently punching myself in the left gland as a punishment. X

Mid table Prem with the occasional cup win?

Nice idea but on what basis?

I'd imagine there are about 20 teams that could possibly stake a claim to that description.

In relation to pre and post MON, we were definitely overachieving during his reign - this is only further proven by what happened when his replacement started to break up his team. Something I fear will happen again when Sven leaves. I don't think we're acknowledging Sven's part in this club transformation.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts folks but we're having a red letter day. I can't see this being the start of anything long lasting unfortunately. Remember the big spending of Derby, Blackburn and Wolves in the not so distant past to realise that it doesn't last forever.

We're not going to be top 6 on a regular basis. We might sneak a top ten spot now again and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get a grip on reality.

Yes, it's exciting, but let's not have delusions of grandeur, just yet.

I can see where you are coming from Rumble...

People turned this topic into a mass debate on whether we are a big club or not, which i understand isn't what you intended it to be.

There is definately some excitement in not knowing if we are going to get the 3 points or not...... Leicester have always been a team difficult to predict, think about the amount of new eras and false dawns we have had over the years.

Being a Leicester Fan i often think how boring it must be to follow Man United or Chelsea, where you fully expect to get the win every game... how can the win feel special when you expected it? Maybe supporting Leicester has warped my brain?

However i don't think Leicester will be in the position of expecting to win every game any time in the near future if at all, so perhaps don't need to worry about that right now.

There is also some pride in supporting a club from the lower leagues....as i think you see yourself as more of an old fashioned football fan than the rich mugs who pay £60+ to sit in the Emirates and watch Arsehole play. It also shows you support your team through the bad times as well as the good.

We're title favourites for a reason. At this level, we should definitely expect to win more games than we lose.

But the thread title implies that promotion is assured. It most certainly isn't..
