MPH Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Yes we are a big city but you would be deluding yourself if you genuinely thought we were a big club. We are not in the top twenty biggest football clubs in England surely? I might be wrong but surely you cannot think that? Thus, when we have had top 10 finishes and won league cups I feel we have outdone ourselves? I may be wrong but I don't think so. Wasn't having a go at us but was just wondering whether people like us being the underdogs at times? X Who would be the 20 clubs bigger than us?
danlcfc4ever Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 We're title favourites for a reason. At this level, we should definitely expect to win more games than we lose. But the thread title implies that promotion is assured. It most certainly isn't.. True... for this season expectation is has most definately gone up a notch.. however if you look at the past decade, we've been incredibly inconsistant.
zynxus Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table Statistically we're ranked 24th out of all clubs according to that we're smaller than bury and grimsby town
Larry_LCFC Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Rumble. Im not sure why but everytime I read your opening post on a new thread, the same question just bugs me time after time - Were you dropped on your head at birth? You are 100% officially barking bonkers and I love you man.
FuriousFox46 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 We are a big club and I refuse to admit otherwise
AoWW Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I'm trying really hard not to make a filthy comment about playing with big boys.
FuriousFox46 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table Statistically we're ranked 24th out of all clubs That list is ridiculous it doesn't take the level of football in to account or quality of opposition For instance I'd say without doubt we're bigger than Bristol City, Bury and Grimbsy Town and Notts County. and I'd argue Chelsea are a bigger club than us as are Spurs.

Yep that's just total points won meaning leagues with more teams and playing at a lower level will obviously make it easier to gain more points per season. For us to be 24th having played only once lower than the top two tiers is quite impressive and shows that we are capable of going a lot higher than we are now.
cc_star Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 At the risk of getting back on what is a great topic, I'll repeat my original reply that the 2nd tier seems, in a way more honest than the top flight - the players seem more real and the good old fashioned English spirit is still present in the majority of the games. If Sven or his successor goes on to replicate or even exceed O'Neil's success then I worry there will be the feeling that we've bought it and whilst we'll all jump for joy and celebrate and be ecstatic over it, I'll miss being one of the few away fans to go to Grimsby on Tuesday, one of not that much over 10,000 cheering us on against Oxford at home, but to be honest even those days are probably long gone, now days its all mascots, cheerleaders expensive beer & expensive tea, so perhaps what I think I'll miss doesn't even exist anymore anyway... Of course I'll love playing against ManU etc, really ****ing love it but there's something English about being crap or at least under-achieving and being unpopular, being different from half your mates supporting PL team. Very different from the 300 HD and even 3D cameras that could be at our ground and all the gloss, sheen & fakeness that comes with it. Assuming for a moment that the best does happen (which is far from certain, but possible), will I miss it? Maybe, but not half as much as I'll love squaring up to ManU & Liverpool etc Bring it on!

Completely see where you're coming from. I'd hate it if we became like Manchester City are. All of their fans must share some sort of snobbery with their new intake of glory supporters.

Guest Col city fan Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I think it depends on what type of fan you are. Do you want to be a big fish in a little pond? Or could you cope being a little fish in a big pond? The two mindsets are completely different. It's hard watching yourself in a relegation fight being outclassed every week and takes a special type of football person to see the good aspects of watching those sort of performances each week. History tells us that fan bases become impatient and fickle, setting unrealistic benchmarks for a side of footballers often worth collectively the value of the oppositions star player. it's much easier to want to stay a big fish in a little pond - to be a football romantic, enjoy the victories, talk about 'honest' football, visiting traditional away grounds where you can stand and reminisce when players had day jobs as green-grocers and a local man owned the football club without two pennies to rub together nurturing home grown talent. I guess you pick which fan you'de like to be or accept that if you feel both ways it's unlikely you'll ever be happy. Excellent post and sums up my feelings on this issue completely..
Salieri Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 After the success under MON if someone had told me it would be followed by so many years of dross, including a slump into the 3rd tier for the first time in our history, I would have thought they were barking. I thoroughly enjoyed those years and began to take the success for granted. Not anymore. I realise now when the good times come around, make sure you fucking enjoy it because you never know what's around the corner. I sincerely hope we can justify the hype and return to the top flight after a long wait. I don't want to keep looking back to the O'Neill era as the 'good old days'. I want a new and exciting chapter of our history to be written and we may just be on the verge of something great... ENJOY IT!!!
Corky Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I wouldn't. I want the club to be as good as it can. We have the potential to be a solid Premier League club, hopefully in the next few years that will be realised.
