Henry Winter piece about Sven in the Derby Programme

In this football wilderness we call International week a few moments of boredom saw me seek out the weekend's match programme and read the few bit and bobs I had not yet got around to.

I was delighted to find a lovely piece by Henry Winter of the Telegraph about our Sven.

More of a character reference than anything else Winter explains that even in the face of journalists baying for his blood during his tenure as England Manager Sven always remained the calm composed and polite gentleman. Even offering recommendations of restaurants while at Euro 2004 in Portugal to men who had just asked him the most awful of questions.

And this got me thinking... There have been a few true Gentlemen of the game in my lifetime.

Bobby Robson jumps straight out as the obvious one, then there's Roy Hodgson.

I'd place Sven amongst them as a true football gentleman.

Now before we start descending into the man's private life that for me in an irrelevance and I'm not saying he's a gentleman with the ladies!!

But he is a true football gentleman, and a true football man.

I'm very proud he is our manager.

manners maketh the man...its an old fashioned concept theses days im afraid...but it has given sven a moral authority over the hacks..they can't rattle him and that pisses them off...it has put them in their place, and has earned sven a sneaking admiration from the fouth estate...

Henry Winter has always had a soft spot for the club, I can remember him sticking up for us when the "boring, boring Leicester" stuff was at it's height under O'Neill.

And to answer your question, I think Ray Wilkins comes across as a great guy.

Modern day (ish) - how about Jamie Redknapp ? Passionate about footy, long-time partner, (singular - which most footballers have no concept of), and was as appalled by the antics of Keys and Gray as anyone. Also, David Beckham. No-one takes more unjustified abuse than he does in football, .... yet multi-lingual, mega-rich through tirelessly building a brand, unfailingly polite and an absolute star in his commitment to his charity work.

Lineker may be a City legend - but he also has a bright agent and legal team.

That is why you don't see too much bad stuff in the media about him.

What's Sven supposedly done anyway in the past? he rifled Ulrike when he was with nancy and then had a crack at that FA piece didn't he? Who Palios also got caught with?

Hardly warrants the tag of a serial love cheat does he? He's small fry compared to some involved in football or fame, but I suppose being old and wrinkly has always caused intrigue and astoundment amongst the public and media. Haha how does he do it?

Svens a nice guy but I'm not having him anywhere near Sir Bobby, Svens conduct as England was absolutely disgraceful.

Not really bothered about the womaniser stuff, shows him as a love cheat but I thought his behaviour trying to tout himself off to the highest bidder whilst England manager and his hand shaking with North Korean Dictators more distasteful than that.

Every wanted man gets offers all the time behind the curtains. Their agents wants transfers and therefor act for it.

Say someone not willing to get ridicoulus money if they change jobs. I can't think of anybody in the fooball industry.

I was pretty bad timing though wasnt it? Chelsea already had someone managing them and we had a major tournament coming up, I very much doubt Sir Bobby Robson would of conducted himself in the same manner.

I am sure Sir Bobby handled discussions as an gentlemen. This mean he didn't go to or use the papers.

I do believe beckham is a true gent. Loves his job, his misses and his kids. He loves his fans and never has anything bad to say about them. Plus his charity work and professionalism are great
