davieG Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 A football player with a Scottish Premier League club has been arrested by police investigating alleged betting irregularities. Steve Jennings of Motherwell FC was arrested at his home. Several other arrests have been made on Merseyside. Police have been investigating betting at a match between Motherwell and Hearts on 14 December, 2010. The Scottish Football Association (SFA) said it was notified of the arrest by the Gambling Commission. During the match Jennings, who had already been booked, was shown a straight red card for foul and abusive language aimed at referee Stevie O'Reilly late in the 2-1 home defeat. The 26-year-old has denied any wrongdoing. Stewart Regan, SFA chief executive, said: "While the investigation involves several other individuals outwith Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match. "Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course."
BoneDog Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 I've not checked yet but when I got home my Mrs told me that Rooney's dad and uncle have been arrested / bailed in connection with a betting scandal so I assume it's this one. It makes you wonder how many people could be involved in this kind of stuff.
MC Prussian Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 One thing's for sure, though. Rooney Sr. looks just like his son:
Guest MattP Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Knew about the before it happened as I work in the industry. Thousands around Liverpool being thrown around on a random Motherwell red card by people who usually dont have a pot to piss in. Took more on this than a Barton red card before the Man City/Liverpool game and that was a national advertisement. Don't even need a jury.

What's the protocol on things like that? do you still pay out or hold the winnings until an inquiry?

Everything on this market was held apart from shops outside Liverpool ( basically in the shops were the large amounts were placed and a suspicious betting pattern was reported before half time) Then goes to Gambling Commission and the IBAS (Independent Betting Adjudication Service) to decide if an investigation should be made or the money should be paid out, 99% of stuff that is reported is held for a certain amount of time before criteria is satisfied. This would not of been paid out as there is clearly sufficient evidence to support some sort of conspiracy, if they get paid out or not now would depend upon the court case, though needless to say anyone involved will not be willing to come forward to claim. edit - IBAS can refer to poilce with sufficient evidence.

Linguistic point: "outwith" is the usual Scots word for outside of. Nice to see it being used unashamedly...

So if they choose not to pay out, do the people who placed a bet get their stake back at least?
BlueSi13 Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Does Rooney's dad need the money or something then?
accessory Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Maybe he needed to raise some cash to go and see his son in Euro 2012. At least he doesn't have to worry about that now..
Fox92 Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Michael Owen's brother involved as well. That was in the paper yesterday, so I think it would probably mean this betting probe.
Ric Flair Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Are people that stupid that they think something like this could go un-noticed through the betting authorities? What happens to the dough if it's held and doesn't get paid out? Do the bookies keep it or does it go to the old bill to spend hiding in car parks to dish out fines to people on their mobiles behind the wheel?

Vanishes between bookies, police and god knows who else.
