stockyfox Posted 7 October 2011 Posted 7 October 2011 My dad reckons Leek was dropped for being out on the piss the night before the final! I bought a Leicester Mercury in Coalville on the Friday afternoon before the Final and it was headlines that Hughie McIlmoyle was to play instead of Ken Leek. Everyone was totally shocked and going down the M1 next morning, it was the only topic of conversation.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 I still have a huge couple of scrapbooks with photos and reports etc from the early to mid sixties. Very vividly I remember them being called "the ice age kings" which became something of a nickname that season. What a bloody superb team we were then. I remain proud, and fortunate to have witnessed the great Mathew Muirhead Gillies era. I just wish that today's younger fans could have seen them, My favourite newspaper headline still remains " LEICESTER SCALPEL CUTS WEST HAM TO SHREDS" -Leicester City 5- West Ham United 1. Those were the days,
Phube Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Being 32 I obviously wasn't there! But every time I read (and this was a damn good read!) about our FA cups/ league runs I just can't help but get a little pang of "If Only"
ajthefox Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 Good read, interesting to think what we could be now had we won the league and FA cup that year..
Dan Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 Love the irony, our first game back after all the snow, and it's against fvcking Ipswich...
iancognito Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Great read. Finishing fourth and a cup final..... felt like relegation Oh for those times again. Think I'd settle for having the 90s back when Leicester was briefly twinned with Wembley
Guest Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 It was just before my time but I was told that Davie Gibson was the greatest midfielder we've ever had. Seems sorta relevant this season.
drofmor56 Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Terrific article ..well researched..i think Leicester have always been held in high regard by a lot of the "older generation" because of the way they played around this time.Never a dirty side but skillful and entertaining to watch, which i think has carried on to this day.

Must be touch and go.
deep blue Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 I remember taking my sister to the game that started that run - the 5-1 hammering of orient on boxing day. We stood in the east stand an it was ball-breakingly cold. I think my feet took 3 days to unfreeze.
Guest Bilo Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 What an achievement it could have been that season. How would our history have changed had we done that double that season?

If only we'd have won the Cup we'd have been viewed so differently. A double and we'd have been one of the "big" teams. Midlands finest.
