Poppies on shirts

Recommended Posts

Am I correct in thinking we were the first club to introduce poppies on to football shirts?

I have a feeling it was the Remembrance fixture against Blackburn in 2003.

Yes. Paul Mace's idea.

Cheers.

Every team in the Premier League will be sporting one this week. Nice to know that a Leicester idea has helped such a worthy cause.

I was thinking about this last week and i think its a bad idea. Poppies should be brought and worn with pride and respect for fallen heroes,,,i just think to many overpayed big time footballers dont even think about that and are wearing it by default and not for the reason its meant..

Hang on. You honestly believe that raising awareness of the Poppy Appeal and Royal British Legion is a bad thing?

These pictures are being beamed around the world and it's bound to stir the curiosity of some foreign viewers. Such expose can only be good and hopefully raise some extra money for the cause.

Why cares what the players think - it's the millions of viewers around the world watching the game that it's aimed at...

Marko, thats not what i said, and i dont disagree with your view. But, poppies do not need to be advertised globally, thats not the point, people have been wearing poppies for many a year for the right reason. It should be the worn by the person who buys it to show the pespect it deserves.

War veterans unhappy over Fifa's poppy ban

War veterans have condemned Fifa for refusing to allow England to display a poppy on their shirts for the team's friendly against Spain on Saturday.

Fifa rules prevent any changes being made to the home kit.

George Batt, general secretary of the Normandy Veterans Association, has described the decision as "disgraceful".

He said: "I'm lost for words. I can't see any harm in wearing a poppy. It's so sad.

"You surely don't need rules and regulations in Fifa like this?

"I would think about 90% of the population wear them [poppies].

"I think it's a bit childish because, after all is said and done, if it wasn't for us blokes, Fifa wouldn't be here."

The players will instead wear poppies on their training kit at Wembley before auctioning it off for charity.

An FA spokesman said: "The FA are proud supporters of our armed forces and we are only too pleased to recognise those that have sacrificed their lives for the nation.

"The England senior team will proudly wear poppies on their training kit and all our staff and representative teams will stop to observe the Armistice Day silence."

Well it seemed implicit from your argument that you were against teams having poppies on their shirt, thus being detrimental to the Appeal's awareness.

Anyway, I don't care who wears a poppy, as long as it helps the cause it's fine by me.

Yeah, we introduced it first but now all the Football programs (such as Soccer AM and Sky Sports) just highlight the Premier League clubs with the Poppies on and not us

Seriously though, it's great. I have massive respect for the heroes who fought for us.

think?

why don't you ask big steve, or wayne rooney for that matter if they have ever bought a poppy.

I think its disgusting that England can't wear poppies on our shirts next week.

Why even bother FIFA about it? The FA should've just walked the team out wearing 'em. What they going to do then? Phone the referee and ask him to abandon the match?

Are you out of your mind?

The whole point is about raising awareness so that people give money to the British Legion. It's the money that's the final aim, and the wearing of the poppy is a means of achieving that. So the more people wear them, and the more high-profile people wear them, the better. Doesn't really matter what we think of the players, to be honest.

Also, I don't see why the FA haven't contested the decision. The FIFA ruling seems to be based on a minor technical rule and could surely be overturned, if they only made an effort to do so.
