Saxondale Posted 18 November 2011 Posted 18 November 2011 When I was a small boy, I went to a Boxing Day game against Brighton. We bumped into the Birch in the old Members' Stand and I asked him to sign my new autograph book that I got for Christmas a day earlier. Not only did Birch sign it, but he noticed that he was the first autograph. He asked me to write him a letter and send it to him in the post. A couple of weeks later, I got my autograph book back in the post and the Birch has passed it round and got the entire squad to sign it for me. WHAT A LEGEND!!!

FoxesAreBlue Posted 18 November 2011 Posted 18 November 2011 I used to work at the (then) walkers stadium when I was 16-18. I was a waiter, but down on the ground floor with the media, refs, club officials, but most excitingly the players and coaches. Obviously the birchenheimer was always knocking about and he was a completely top bloke - obviously out on the pitch at half time he has to be family friendly, but in the privacy of the stadium itself it was just like talking with one of the lads always with his one liners etc - I'd sometimes bump work off and watch the games from the edge of the tunnel and have a right good laff with him (provided we were winning). Maybe we got on so well cos I was the one who filled the pie machine in the media room - I always had to keep 2 back for him but he never fails to thank me or say hello etc. Same can't be said of some of the players. Elvis Hammond was a bit of a **** - he used to try and demand that I crush up sugar cubes and put them on a plate so he could have it on his cereal!!!
