Works out of the box, superb customer service and will last forever by computer standards. Written on my very early Macbook 2, 5 years old yet still runs the latest software, about 18 months ago I had a hard drive failure, replaced at the Genius Bar in about 20 minutes, free of charge as some models of the same vintage were known to have 'issues' with the hard drive...... If the requirements are quite modest how about an iPad with keyboard/dock?

Echoing marbelladaves sentiments, with the exception of an iPad as they are £400 why not get a tablet pc because as you said originally it will mainly be used to surf the Internet. Just go with a good brand and looks. Has the Core processor which is far superior to the Celeron they put in the cheaper version of the Inspiron and Dells are generally pretty solid.

Plus Lenovo are one of the most reliable laptop manufacturers out there.

MC Prussian Posted 21 November 2011 Posted 21 November 2011 I've been using Apple for quite a while now, simply because I'm working in editing at times and I don't think the software from other companies is as kosher as Final Cut Pro (the industry standard). Also, it's just so simple and a joy to use and I don't want to be a nerd, knowing my computer inside out, I just want it to work and being of simple use, with little faults. In essence, I don't want to go back to PCs. Myself, I've had too many issues with hard drives or coolers failing or Windows crashing (with or without viruses). And even though parts are cheap these days, it all adds up once you have to replace them one after the other. So, if you're into dissecting chips, RAMs or hard drives, needing to know how your computer ticks, go for a regular laptop. All I'm saying is that MacBooks also tend to last way past the end of your warranty date and customer service is great - they're sometimes very generous and offer you cheap deals or replace parts for free (even if you're past the warranty). Yes, they cost more than your regular laptop, but then again, the resale value is a bit higher, too. And you can get them for relatively little money these days, "little" in Apple terms, of course (13-inch models starting at £999).

Posted 21 November 2011 Posted 21 November 2011 if you buy a cheap laptop, it will be of awful plastic construction though - so be careful. as a few others have said, a macbook will cost more initially but will last far longer, is of far better build quality, customer service via apple is brilliant, and if you go to sell it after 3 years it will actually be worth quite a bit still compared to a plastic £300 windows laptop which will be completely worthless (well maybe get £20 on ebay for it)
