Captain... Posted 21 November 2011 Posted 21 November 2011 Yesterday was the first time I had been able to watch Beckford and Nugent play together. They haven't played together much I think that was the 4th time they have started together. The first time they both scored, but I think yesterday was the first time since then that either has scored while the other has been on the pitch. Watching them yesterday I did think that they were very similar players, both playing on the shoulders of the defenders and occupying the same space. They did both pull out wide to make space, but I don't remember either dropping back to pick the ball up deeper and there was often a gap between them and the midfield. They also didn't seem to have much of an understanding together, I can't recall either of them passing to the other. They both like the ball played in front of them to run on to. Nugent is better at holding the ball up but that is still not really his strength, neither look that comfortable under the high balls, again Nugent better than Beckford at that. They haven't played together much and I don't know them that well as players before they came to Leicester. So do you think they can form a good partnership or will it end up being one or the other?

Nugent will chase down lost causes all day, where as Beckford will look to pounce on anything around the box and get on the end of crosses. But that doesn't mean they'll work well together, but I hope so as they both have a lot of goals in them.

They are not identical players and Nugent does chase defenders down more than Beckford, but Beckford was chasing defenders yesterday. Neither are target men and neither drop back and join the midfield battle and create chances for others. I don't think Howard is the answer, but I'm not sure Becks and Nugent are. They will take their chances but we need the ball and the creativity in midfield to provide for them.

I'm sure you'll come up with a list of reasons though... Have you started watching again yet btw?

Pearson tried to sign Beckford for us before he signed for Everton so he definitely rates him. I've a feeling this partnership is gonna take off!!

I think Beckford is a good player, I can see why any manager might want him, but for me they just do not 'look right' as a pair. Maybe NFP will bring in a 'big man' for Beckford to play off, that should work though it will marginalise Nugent. Would not like to see that happen......

Depends what you mean by playing out wide, he's not a winger but as a part of a front 3 in a 433 formation it could work Beckford down the middle, Nuge/Gally/Dyer/Vassell/Schlupp taking up the wide forward roles. It depends if NP wants to play that formation and can get it working successfully. I can see him sticking to 442 until January and then bringing someone in to make that work. Maybe it will be his plan B.

I really hope Jermaine can settle here and rip the goals in, the clip at the end of the highlights on the BBC website show him smiling and hugging Nigel. This could be the start of something big. I can get the same buzz when Beckford scores as I did when Collymore did the business, I just hope it doesn't end the same way.

I'm optimistic that Nige will get the players we have playing consistently better. I'm convinced you won't be happy unless we are beating teams three nil every week.. Which ain't gonna happen Give Pearson a chance and start looking at the positives. You're constant criticism ( although sometimes constructive I must confess) is getting too predictable. You are sounding like a miserable bugger, as I said yesterday. We are in a strong position for the play offs and now have a better manager at this level IMO. Let's hear some happier stuff Dave

Take care mate Actually no, I had no idea you 'reported me' - Scary stuff. My posts became aggressive because I stuck up for Bert - and what I wrote was not even directed at you. Your reply however, was to "crawl out from my own arsehole" - don't post that sort of language then go crying to Moderators when the retorts to your own baiting start to feel 'nasty.' I simply stopped posting because I no longer possessed the motivation to attempt to reason with you as it mattered not what I wrote as it seemed you did not have the ability to critically reflect on anybody's replies, which negated the purpose of any debate - you may as well have posted letters to yourself than taken part in any useful exchange of thought that involved any hope of inducing any experiential benefit. That's what happens when you argue with your heart not your head - And your heart hated Sven from the very first mention of his tenure - you were only happy when we signed players or won a match - aside from that, all negative.
