Club captain Mills was left out of the squad and did not travel to Pride Park on Thursday night as City beat Derby County 1-0. ​ The Mercury understands that Mills did not train with the first team before the clash against the Rams. Mills, who joined City from Reading in a move that was initially worth £3.5million and is among the club's highest wage earners, is said to be devastated to lose the captaincy and still wants to play for the club. But Mills has been left in no doubt that he is no longer in the frame. He has fallen down the pecking order behind Sean St Ledger, Wes Morgan and Sol Bamba under Pearson. Following the 3-2 defeat at Watford just under two weeks ago, Mills was left on the bench for the FA Cup fifth-round win at Norwich last weekend. And when he was not even named on the substitute's bench on Thursday night, Pearson was quizzed on his absence. When asked if Mills still had a future with City, Pearson replied: "You will have to wait and see, it depends. "My concern is always to pick the side I think is best to win a given game. That is what I have done tonight and always will. "The relevance of how much he cost is for others to discuss, not for me to discuss. "I am not interested in price tags. "I am interested in the group being winners." New Leeds boss Neil Warnock is keen to bolster his defence and has moved to take Mills on loan to Elland Road for the rest of the season, with City paying the majority of his wages. "It's been clear over the last couple of months that defensively we're not good enough," said Warnock. "We'll score goals and create goals, but the season's going to come down to whether we can get players in who'll give us the chance to have a run. We need leaders on the pitch." Matt Mills' proposed loan move to Leeds United looks likely to signal the beginning of the end of his short-lived Leicester City career.Mills arrived at City last July in a deal which could have eventually been worth around £4.5m. He didn't become City's most expensive player – that still is Ade Akinbiyi – but Mills was former boss Sven-Goran Eriksson's marque signing among the dozen or so recruits he brought to the club. A big player, fresh from a play-off final at Wembley with Reading – and the best defender in the Championship, former Foxes legend Alan Young was still insisting only a few weeks ago. So where did it go wrong? It didn't start well for the 25-year-old as he played only a bit part in the pre-season tour of Sweden and Austria with a toe injury. Then, the club skipper found himself dropped after just two Championship matches following a poor game against his former club. Hardly a vote of confidence from Eriksson, who quickly restored him to the starting line-up only for the former England manager to depart towards the end of October. The team had been dogged by inconsistency – and Mills was singled out by some fans after being sent off against Birmingham and Hull. However, Mills came out fighting in an interview in January as he pointed to 11 clean sheets and said: "It is funny because I have been getting so much stick since I joined, people saying I haven't had a great start to my City career, but our defensive record is very good." Clearly not "good" enough for Pearson, who discarded Mills completely from Wednesday's squad at Derby County.

Obviously Morgan and StLedger are first choice but surely he can be fighting to win his place back instead of doing well at Leeds and also with them in front of us were only helping them by giving him away to them. sphericalfox Posted 25 February 2012 Posted 25 February 2012 If the Warncock is looking for 'leaders on the pitch', he might well look elsewhere. Mills hasn't evidenced much leadership skills so far. Maybe he did so at Reading, but I've not seen it.

It isn't even to get his wages off the books as we are still paying most of them! its probably a chance to prove he is good enough (which i think he is) to play for us in the future without actually playing him in our team although, in the summer i wouldn't mind a direct swap for snodgrass

Mills has been very up and down and I'm surprised how quickly it's all happened. But Pearson is there day in day out and knows what he's doing.

Seems the Reading fans were right all along. Can't see him being much different at Leeds to be honest, probably reck any chance they have of reaching the playoffs nice one NP...

I know what your saying Babbs but lets say we do go on a run now and get close to the play-offs only for say Leeds to pip us to the post as they have suddenly tightened up their defence? just might be a bit ironic thats all im saying
