Filbert_Ross Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 A Spanish TV commercial featuring Jose Reina has been taken off air following complaints the advertisement was racist and homophobic. British campaign group Operation Black Vote complained to Spanish insurance firm Groupama Seguros that one advert from a series featuring Reina "depicts black people in a jungle scenario as stupid, backward, animalistic homosexuals." The advert plays on Reina's surname, which means 'queen', and shows the Spain international being introduced to a tribal chief who chooses him as his partner. A Spanish TV commercial featuring Jose Reina has been taken off air following complaints the advertisement was racist and homophobic. OBV says the advert has been pulled from Spanish TV since its complaint. Groupama agreed to withdraw the advert from Spanish TV, but in a statement denied it was offensive. The statement said: "Groupama Seguros does not consider that this advert contains either offensive nor any discriminatory content." OBV director Simon Woolley said: "I'm shocked on so many levels. "Firstly, how would the Spanish feel if the English stereotyped Spanish people as backward, stupid, and animalistic homosexuals? "Secondly, what does this say about Pepe Reina? "The Liverpool goalkeeper has lived and worked in the UK for nearly a decade, does he think it's okay characterise black people this way? "Does he think his black team-mates will laugh at his joke?" Liverpool have already been involved in one race storm this season after striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches for abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Everyone knows that in the jungles of Spain you will find entire tribes of black homosexuals breeding away as they have done for centuries. This country is so insular, that's the problem. It just doesn't understand the bigger world.

Won't someone think about the bus drivers!!!! What a crock of shit, they aren't stereotyping all black people. It's ONE character in a set of adverts clearly meant to be humourous. If there is a black character in Eastenders who is a bit dodgy, do you ban the programme for suggesting all black people are dodgy? It's hardly the black and white minstrel show.

Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Some people really will complain about anything, it is not about sexuality or race, it is a joke about his name, it is overreactions like this that put back attitudes towards race and sexuality, because people will feel they can't talk about it, laugh about it, joke about it. Saying that, by english standards Spain is a very racist country.
