ozleicester Posted 27 March 2012 Author Posted 27 March 2012 The Media call it football only because the "federation" have said they have to. Of course the purists know it is football, but most of the oz public call it soccer, always have, always will. The unbalanced season is a shambles, you cannot possibly have a fair competition if you dont play everyone twice - once home and once away. The Finals are a money spinner and because it what the aussies understand, now if only we could score more goals and perhaps add"points for missing" I do not see the A league or any other national league ever growing to the quality required, simply because of the dominance of AFL and League. If we cannot get more than 5000 to games in our biggest cities what chance is there?

Brisbane has a population of around 2 million, yet we only get around 10 000 people in a stadium with a capacity of 52,500.
OzFox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 This. Brisbane has a population of around 2 million, yet we only get around 10 000 people in a stadium with a capacity of 52,500. That's a fantastic stadium....the Aussie San Siro. I used to watch Brisbane Strikers there when it had grass banks at the end The crowds are depressing. Sydney only get 10,000 out of a 4 million population (although it's gone up now that they're winning) I don't know what more the clubs can do as they seem to have made a lot of effort with publicity this year. I'm constantly bombarded with stuff from sydney about discount ticket offers, merchandise, adverts for upcoming matches etc.

(hours on a plane in some case's) In England the away followings are much larger, making the atmosphere much more hostile, which in my opinion adds to the experience. Some games back home in aus can feel a bit like sunday league.

Gold Coast brought about 10 fans to SFS, although not that surprising when they were only getting 2000 at home Dunno what it's like in Brisbane and Melbourne, but the hard core fans in the home end at sydney make a huge effort. Constant chants, big banners etc. Could do with some of that at the KP

Roar have a section that do their best, but when your in a stadium with only 1 in 5 seats taken and only a hand full of away fans, its a losing battle.
Gold Coast Fox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 The only time our ground is full is when Queensland are beating NSW in the state of origin... for the 6th time in a row
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 If only it was like this all the time Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, wish i made it to Germany '06. Made it to South Africa '10 which was incredible but Germany would of been incredible.

Made it to South Africa '10 which was incredible but Germany would of been incredible. Me and my Pommy mates were delirious with joy when that went in so God knows how you lot felt. Amazing. I was sitting high up at the back of the stadium, right in front of the Uruguayan delegation, including a stony faced Gus Poyet. Haven't been to a finals since France 98, when England fans spent 3 days smashing up Marseille with the help of riot police and local Muslims. That was more entertaining than the football.

I was too nervous to join my mates down the pub so stayed home and watched it, when that peno went in i just yelled out so loud i could hear all the dogs from 100 metres around barking. Was one of the great moments in Australian sport, especially after waiting so long.
OzFox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Talking of special offers, Sydney are offering free members tickets for their playoff game All you gotta do is fly to New Zealand to get them
AyewJoking Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Maybe Rangers and Celtic could join the Aussie league?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Cultural cringe? I'm thinking of English people I know who've moved out there. Trying to fit in by adopting these kind of phrases
OzFox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 I'm thinking of English people I know who've moved out there. Trying to fit in by adopting these kind of phrases I've got a German pal who likes to say "ripper". Never sounds quite right somehow
OzFox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Maybe Rangers and Celtic could join the Aussie league? Celtic did their pre-season here, so you never know
MC Prussian Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 What's this "soccer" thing everyone keeps referring to?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 What's a ticket cost over there? $20 or $25 for a general admision. (ie. no set seats for certain areas of the ground) One aussie $ is .60 pence so about 12-15 pounds. Most sports are pretty similar in price.
OzFox Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Shows you how seriously they take the team that wins the league. The FFA didn't bother to fly the Premiers Plate out to NZ so, the Mariners used a dinner plate instead THE ever-enterprising Mariners can find a way around any problem, a reduced training pitch, no money for wages and even a decision by soccer chiefs not to fly the Premier's Plate to Wellington on Sunday. No trophy, no problem, and once they had beaten Phoenix to become minor premiers, someone grabbed a dinner plate and turned it into a de facto piece of silverware. The picture above appeared on one player's Twitter account. For all the levity make no mistake about how annoyed the players and coaching staff are at what they see as a colossal snub. A-League bosses should be careful the Mariners don't have to be so inventive if they win the grand final given that the trophy is dubbed the A-League "toilet seat"...
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 On a side note i saw Ljubo Milicevic walking around on his own yesterday in a shopping centre. Looked scruffy as hell and still miffed how he was able to captain a team that made it to the group stages of the Champions League and played well against Aresnal.

Says on wiki he suffered depression in europe, so maybe he's still got it
