ajthefox Posted 11 April 2012 Posted 11 April 2012 The claim that the Titanic ( if that is the reference) was ever considered “unsinkable” is a complete myth. It being called the “unsinkable ship” made for a better story after the event . http://www.bbc.co.uk...gazine-17515305 I'd always wondered about that. Surely they knew that if enough water got into it somehow, it would actually sink.
Reynard Bleu Posted 11 April 2012 Posted 11 April 2012 Good, but I prefer the one in your sig Ta, Duke of Wellington I think!
Zingari Posted 11 April 2012 Posted 11 April 2012 You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to. Col. Jessup A Few Good Men

Guesty Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 Excerpts from Jim Valvano's 1993 ESPY's speech. I think one of the best speeches ever, considering the circumstances. He died 2 months after this speech. "Don't Give Up . . . Don't Ever Give Up." "They got that screen up there flashing 30 seconds, like I care about that screen. I got tumors all over my body and I'm worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds." "To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special." "Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever. I thank you and God bless you all."
OzFox Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 Probably not true, but what the hell... "I'm ashamed of you, dodging that way. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." General John Sedgwick, shortly before he got a bullet in the face
Zingari Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 Probably not true, but what the hell... "I'm ashamed of you, dodging that way. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." General John Sedgwick, shortly before he got a bullet in the face According to QI that is quite true .
OzFox Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 According to QI that is quite true . Seems to be some debate about the amount of time between saying it and copping the bullet. Still funny though. Although not for him of course...
Darkon84 Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball 'Mike Stowell, when he was attempting to train our goalkeepers last season' According to a lot of fools last year that blamed him for all our defensive failings
The Doctor Posted 12 April 2012 Posted 12 April 2012 If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball 'Mike Stowell, when he was attempting to train our goalkeepers last season' According to a lot of fools last year that blamed him for all our defensive failings That's quite a primitive and brutal way of training keepers.

ozleicester Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 Why would a keeper dodge a ball... surely the whole point of a goalkeeper is to get in the way if the ball? Did you not see Weale? He mustve trained hard coz he could dodge almost anything from 20+ yards
