MikeyT Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 The Bradford City fires that claimed the lives of 56 people. Rest in peace to all. Was truly horrific. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/may/11/newsid_2523000/2523561.stm
stripeyfox Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 Can still remember watching this live on Grandstand. Saw the video again a few years ago at a Fire Training event at work. Truly appaliing - one can only shudder to think how big the death toll might have been if they had a fence on that stand. Hopefully we've come a long way in stadium design and safety since then.

purpleronnie Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 I remember it too, I was always amazed how everyone didnt get away in time there seemed plenty of time to evacuate. so sad.
MrSpaM Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 I remember it too, I was always amazed how everyone didnt get away in time there seemed plenty of time to evacuate. The people who decided to escape onto the pitch were ok, it was the people who decided to try and get out through the turnstiles that were worst hit because they'd been locked in once the match had started, and nobody was there to unlock them.
RonnieTodger Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 Awful - RIP. What a tough job Peter Brackley had, having to commentate on that (If it was live). Obviously nothing compared to the Police though
stripeyfox Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 Awful - RIP. What a tough job Peter Brackley had, having to commentate on that. Out of interest, who are Bradford playing? Lincoln City I think. Bradford had won the Third Division Championship which I think had swelled the crowd. The game was officially abandoned and never replayed so the records show Lincoln/Bradford only played 45 games, not 46 that year.
Guest Bilo Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 It was Lincoln they were playing that day, Sincil Bank has a stand named after the two Lincoln fans who died in the fire called the Stacey West Stand. An appalling tragedy that has almost been forgotten due to the tragedy of Hillsborough. RIP to all 56 innocent victims.
Bert Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 The scariest thing was that whole stand took 6/7 minutes to be fully burning. Absolutely devastating to see that poor man as a human fireball.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 Absolutely devastating to see that poor man as a human fireball. He died unfortunately. A number of people were killed in their seats it spread so quickly. Dreadful
