Finnegan Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 Without sounding too young/inept/forgetful, what actually is northern Ireland's flag or don't they have an official one and it's the union jack instead? X) just need a history lesson before I make any opinions The Unionists will tell you the Ulster Banner, the Republicans will tell you the Tricolour and the official answer is they don't have one. The government fly the Union Jack formally, I believe.
Finnegan Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 Tension my friend, tension. I love it when folk get all above themselves and knock others with some attempt at puerile derision, only to get the basics wrong. Fail Pablo . Mablo's awful spelling stopped being funny about five years ago when people clocked he might type like a retard but he pretty much knows what he's on about.
Mack Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 I'm going for 4-1 Spain. Woops my mistake, I thought they might have the players to nick a set piece consolation but nope.

Haydos Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 Missed the game but just seen this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyTu8ibpp9w Goosebumps. Incredible atmosphere.
Guest MattP Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 Spain made over 800 passes in last night's game. The only way we could make that many is if we enter Wayne Rooney on Mastermind.

acooling08 Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 Clearly didn't pay much attention then did you (Bloody Sunday) The topic only covered 1750 - 1921, and I had never heard of that Bloody Sunday, I always thought that was Russian? Either way, after reading up on it, it seems no worse than what the IRA did to many Northern Irish and English civilians around the same time. We need to move on from both sets of atrocities.

X) just need a history lesson before I make any opinions There is no official NI flag. The one that appears on FIFA ex is actually a loyalist flag which encompasses the red hand, a six pointed star to represent the counties, the crown to signify the union and the George's cross. Ulster's colours are actually black and amber as worn by the Railway cup teams.

We do need to move on but for many people Bloody Sunday is fresh in the memory. There is a bit of a difference between the state gunning down innocent civilians and a terrorist organisation doing it. The fact that you have equated the two would play into the hands of the dissidents etc.

acooling08 Posted 15 June 2012 Posted 15 June 2012 you've got me in stitches on my floor. Did you never pay attention in history lessons? Hey, I got a C at the end of A-Level, I just have a really shit memory! I doubt if I re-took the exams I did a year ago now, my score would be only slightly better than somebody who never did the course. To be fair, I did at least get the most recent event within my time period correct Glad I made you laugh anyway

I haven't studied history in 5 years, I still remember enough about bloody Sunday to discuss it when it came up while down the pub a couple of months back...
RedHux Posted 16 June 2012 Posted 16 June 2012 Bloody Sunday was two days after I was born and you're all discussing it like it was ancient history. Oh, and lets not forget such fun things like Internment in the list of ways the Irish have been poorly treated in recent history.

It always amuses me when people base their opinion on 'well, I learned all about it in my A-levels'. Really? You learned all about the Irish Famine (as it'll be bookmarked) in your f 4-5 page chapter in your history lesson, and you have a conclusive basis on which to base your opinion on? You also had the opportunity to read all about the 'The Troubles' which was nicely summed up for you in another rip-roaring summarised chapter. You also believe that the accounts and facts provided are wholly objective and conclusive, so you can have a chat about it, and put yourself forward authoritatively in argument? There's a lot of intelligent posters on this forum, yet some of them I shake my head in despair. If someone asks in one hundred years time why the Jews haven't just let the second world war go, as it's not even in your lifetime then rethink your thoughts on why some Irish are still a little miffed. I don't agree with the violence that has been dished out by either side, and the situation that is deeply entrenched in the North of Ireland. The ignorance shown by some posters is baffling. Pick up a book. Have read of the book, and try make sure you know both sides of the story before you make your opinion. Or go visit some museums in Ireland and get a better understanding what it might be like historically to have your overlords try exterminate you. I have no beef with the British (or English specifically) people. When I hear racism of 'thick paddy's' and 'backwards Ireland', and I think to myself how Ireland has an antiquated education system, due to the lack of available government funding, and aching healthcare system, and an infrastructure that has been hindered by a reliance of trade through the UK, rather than having the ability to deal with Europe, this is all result of the past history. You don't need to look at any other country other than Poland to find great similarities between two countries trying to get back on their feet due to historic occupation and the issues that come from this. Anyway, thanks to those who have some sense, and I don't have any bitterness towards those who have talked little sense. Go get some learning! Anyway
ADK Posted 16 June 2012 Posted 16 June 2012 It would be good if Ireland were part of the UK imo but can see why that probably won't happen.

Guest MattP Posted 16 June 2012 Posted 16 June 2012 It would be good if Ireland were part of the UK imo but can see why that probably won't happen. On a serious note if it wasn't for the history they would jump at the opportunity at the minute with the fiscal position of Eire, it always baffled me how they spent hundreds of years fighing us for their independance and then in one day went and gave it all to Europe in a ballot box a couple of years ago. Interesting article here how only 7pc would trade the current position for a United Ireland now and even a vote with just the catholics in the North wouldn't even vote it through at the minute. http://www.independe...ed-3134105.html

Nepotism, corruption, no NHS, inflated prices ever since the Euro came in and a clash in culture (we're more Anglicised than we think) are a few reasons for not voting for a United Ireland. Middle class nationalists know they are better off in the UK. Money talks.
