Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Leicester really isn't that bad. Definitely areas in the city centre that need investment but hardly the dive it's made out to be.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 You're right, especially since they extended the SHIRES and improved the area around it. However Leicester just seems to lack a bit of character - I've still not gotten over the Silver Arcade closing down. That place used to be great

Rincewind Posted 24 July 2012 Author Posted 24 July 2012 Walke through the Shires part at night a month or so back. It almost had a continental feeling to it. I mean that in a good way. The lights and the outside tables and the music gave out a friendly atmosphere.
Reynard Bleu Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 When I hear people say this is little to do in Leicester, I usually suggest they try a night out in Coventry! Leicester has some decent pubs some reasonable restaurants, the West-End it aint, but after a night out in Godiva town you learn to appreciate what you have.

That place used to be great The only reason it seems to lack character is that almost all the decent buildings and landmarks are bunched really tightly together in comparison to other cities, so there's no room to appreciate them.

It is, I generally try to stay away from City Centres nowadays but apart from the bit under the High Cross where the Steak House and the Boss, Lacoste shops etc are and to an extent St Martins square I think it's a complete dump full of scumbags. Less said about the route in through Frog Island the better.......
ADK Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Its the worst city centre of anywhere i've lived but thankfully i'm not a city person and the surrounding areas are very nice.

I can honestly say I'd rather live in Kabul than Luton. Bradford, Middlesborough, Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast and Hull are all far worse than here as well from the places I've been.

Or standard of the city? Or like crime and general stuff like that? Because from my experiences I'd probably rather live in Liverpool than Leicester.

Cleanliness, how friendly the people were, quality of the bars etc To be fair I only visited Liverpool/Ormskirk around Grand National time when it was full of 90,000 people pissed up trying to fight each other so I imagine it wasn't the best time to judge.

Oh right. People from Liverpool are quite friendly (more so to other people from Liverpool, mind). Some of the bars around town and stuff are the pits though, so I can see why you'd think that if you visited. And yeah, Grand National weekend was FA Cup semi final derby day too haha, everyone had been drinking since early morning! Both Leicester and Liverpool are decent enough, just seem to have a bad reputation.

Live in Leeds which (for me) is an absolutely brilliant place - but whenever I come back to Leicester I'm never disgusted by the people or the city, or anything equally dramatic. There are worse, there are better. Far from a dump.
