Corky Posted 17 September 2012 Posted 17 September 2012 The World T20 starts tomorrow in Sri Lanka. For a side generally so poor at limited overs cricket, we are actually defending a trophy in this form- our first World title which we claimed in 2010. The favourites will no doubt be the hosts, as well as India and Pakistan. The main threats from outside Asia will probably consist of England and South Africa. First game is Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe, whilst England open with a match against Afghanistan on Friday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/19577639
purpleronnie Posted 17 September 2012 Posted 17 September 2012 I should probably bet england to lose every match like I did last time and we'll walk it!!!
Guest MattP Posted 17 September 2012 Posted 17 September 2012 All about runs for us, we've got a top draw bowling attack so it should come down to if our batsman can put enough up.

Sri Lanka and South Africa look the faves to me, then us, Pakistan and the West Indies, Windies have some pisspoor players but any team with Gayle, Pollard and Bravo in has a shot at winning any T20. As daft as it sounds I'm backing Zimbabwe to turn over Sri Lanka in the first game, huge odds at 6/1 in a tournament that has seen more than a few shocks, I think that will be tight and Zimbabwe have some very decent up and coming players in Taylor, Coventry etc.
Voll Blau Posted 17 September 2012 Posted 17 September 2012 West Indies can destroy anyone on their day but sadly there's no way they'll have the consistency to carry it through a whole tournament. Shame really as I've got a soft spot for them, love seeing them do well. Sadly I see India winning it.

Yeah the same applies to Pakistan quite often though they have an extremely good bowling attack to fall back on. I really don't see how India can win it with Baliji as a death bowler, they will need to score 200 at some point I think.
Corky Posted 17 September 2012 Author Posted 17 September 2012 India's batting will probably get them through, they'll know the conditions as well as any team.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 September 2012 Posted 17 September 2012 All i will say is i wouldn't be surprised to see Australia lose both there games. The fact we don't take it seriously is a key indicator. George Bailey captained the side in his first ever game for Australia in any form of the game, Brad Hogg is 42 and doesn't even play first class cricket. Neither Siddle or Jimmy Patto are in the squad or is Michael Clarke.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 September 2012 Posted 19 September 2012 Not excuses at all mate, just a genuine observation that it appears we never pick our best side/squad for T20 and never have done. Also if you ask the regulars in the Test Cricket thread (Matt P, Marko, Corky, Scouse Fox and Alexkokopops) they will tell you i rate test cricket higher than any of the other forms of the game. That being said i do hope my assumptions are wrong and we go on and win it. A player to watch will be Glenn Maxwell a local Melbournian who is keeping Hussey out of the side.
Corky Posted 19 September 2012 Author Posted 19 September 2012 What a performance yesterday by Mendis of Sri Lanka- figures of 6 for 8 in four overs
purpleronnie Posted 19 September 2012 Posted 19 September 2012 england lose 5 wickets for 5 runs...and still win.

I'm amazed they left Hussey out, I know he's been in a real rut but he really can play spin well and thought he'd be selected here/ england lose 5 wickets for 5 runs...and still win. Pretty much sums up what I said, superb bowling attack but no confidence in us getting the runs we'll need.
Corky Posted 19 September 2012 Author Posted 19 September 2012 Wimpy Watson puts in a great performance to send Australia home against the Irish (or England B team). http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/19640423
Guest MattP Posted 19 September 2012 Posted 19 September 2012 What a fantastic occasion to see Afghanistan playing in a World Cup as well. If they had held their catches we would have a game on here as well.
Corky Posted 19 September 2012 Author Posted 19 September 2012 India win by 23 runs, Afghanistan making a respectable 136 in reply. Won't be a pushover on Friday.
Guest MattP Posted 19 September 2012 Posted 19 September 2012 India win by 23 runs, Afghanistan making a respectable 136 in reply. Won't be a pushover on Friday. Take the two simple catches off Kohli and Raina and they probably win today. Could be very tricky Friday, wouldn't want to be chasing 150.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 September 2012 Posted 19 September 2012 Afghanistan were surprisingly not to bad, great signs for World Cricket. Was glad we got over the Irish so easily in the end and hopefully take some confidence from it..............hey after all we were the underdogs if you look at the world rankings
Guest MattP Posted 21 September 2012 Posted 21 September 2012 I've got a bad feeling about this.... edit: relax...
Captain... Posted 21 September 2012 Posted 21 September 2012 I've got a bad feeling about this.... edit: relax... ha ha, switched it on just as Morgan came in, not a bad total, should be good enough to see off the Afghans, but a few signs of worry, and with better fielding they could have made a game of this. 32 runs and a wicket in that over there, that'll do nicely, what is the highest ever score off a single over, I know 36 has been scored, but with the free hit rule has that ever been surpassed?
leicesterisme Posted 21 September 2012 Posted 21 September 2012 Played Luke Wright, hard luck to finish on 99 though!
purpleronnie Posted 21 September 2012 Posted 21 September 2012 I've been saying he should have replaced bopara...hopefully that will help cement his place.
Corky Posted 21 September 2012 Author Posted 21 September 2012 Second Englishman to finish with 99 after Hales v West Indies earlier in the year. Afghanistan's fielding has let them down badly, because the bowling was promising.

They have been very impressive, bit of work on the fielding and they will do ok. 62 by Harry Morley, I only know it as I memorised it because I'm convinced one day it will come up ina pub quiz. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/245432.html 62 off R Grubb (9x6 2x4)(4nb) Tourists v Gargett Gargett 1968/69
