Does anyone know whether those language CD's are any good?

'Rosetta Stone'...

Are they worth paying for or would people advise doing a taught language course?

I'm looking at doing Spanish.

I genuinely wouldn't want to leave the shores of Ol Blighty.

Fair play, I moan about it, but we have some of the most lovely cities, green countryside and best standard of living in the world.

And I'd miss the football too much too.

hahaha no we don't. as someone who has moved to and lived in other countries for work i can tell you that is not the case.

I did say 'some of' mate.

I'm aware that there's better.

Home is where the heart is, truism that. For some home may be one of the worlds many beautiful, wonderful places, for others its 'blighty'. We are not all the same, but for me, someone who has spent many years away from home and country. I am at home and happy here. Life in the UK is riddled with flaws and problems, but I still love home. The thought of home keeps you going during the tough times when away. The simplicities of normal life, a beer in the pub, the footie, walks in the rain or snow, my dogs, a sunday roast and of course my family. the stuff we take for granted everyday, all seem so very, very far away on a stinking hot night in Nasiryah or Sangin or the like. I still want to visit the world, but I need to come back to feed my soul!

Sad news.

I always went to Fosse Park and Sports Direct, only to wade through tonnes of shit, ruined brands and ridiculous RRP's. Not to mention all the cuntish policies - I bought a footie shirt that ended up too big and they wouldn't give me my money back and would only put it on a gift card.

I would always end up in JJB and although things were a little more expensive the products would be decent and I found the staff quite good. I liked the astro turf stylee carpet upstairs too

Hundreds of workers at an engineering companyicon1.png have been made redundant.

A total of 222 workers out of a staff of 336 at Schlegel Automotive Europe Ltd, in Bardon Hill, Coalville, have lost their jobs.

  • 4196403.jpg
Martin Traynor, managing director of the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, said he was saddened that another local firm

The staff were told at meetings yesterday and the day before about the job losses and that the company had gone into administrationicon1.png.

The company in Beveridge Lane, which specialises in making car sealing systems for the motor industry, was established in 1958.

A 52-year-old worker, who has been at the firm for 17 years, said the news had come as a real shock.

He said: “We did not expect this at all.

“There has been no consultation about these job losses. It was more or less a case of being called in and told you did not have a job any more.

“A lot of us feel we have been very badly let down by the company. We have given them years and years of skilled work and then we get dumped like this.

“God knows what will happen to lots of the blokes who work here. It is not a good time to be looking around for a new job. For a lot of us, age is not on our side.”

Unite spokesman Harish Patel said the union was disappointed with the job losses at the company.

He said: “The union has been working closely with the local management team since Schlegel was purchased by the RUIA Group in 2008.

“Unite believes these job losses are the direct result of the loss of a large Nissan contracticon1.png. Working closely with the administrators, Springfields Business Recovery based in Leicester, Unite will try to secure a buyer for the remaining business and ensure that those who have lost their jobs get the best redundancy entitlement.”

Situl Raithatha, director at Springfields, said: “A detailed assessment is being carried out as to the viability of continuing to trade the businessicon1.png whilst a buyer is sought.

“Regrettably, a significant number of redundancies have been necessary due in particular to the loss of volume which accounted for a substantial portion of the company’s turnovericon1.png.

“We are continuing the process of liaising with the trade unions and other stakeholders and are hopeful that a buyer can be found. ”

Martin Traynor, managing director of the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, said he was saddened to hear that another local firm had shed jobs.

The news comes just a few days after it was announced the RF Brookes food factory, in South Wigston, was to close by March next year with the loss of 229 jobs.

United Carpets and Beds, which has three outlets in Leicestershire, has announced it is to close a number of stores.

The furnishing firm, which has 420 staff in 72 stores, has outlets in Aylestone Road, Aylestone, Melton Road, Belgrave, and Sherrard Street, Melton.

The United Carpets’ trading arm went into administration on Thursday but the Rotherham-based furnishing chain bought its subsidiary immediately out of administration.

The firm is now holding talks with landlords to try to reduce rent payments.

It's a shame that all these firms are shutting down, though with JJB, it's a case of being unable to compete with Sports Direct - a place I can't stand to go in. To me it's more like walking into a jumble sale and searching for ages through shit to find something actually worth buying (a bit like TK Maxx).

People who have lost their jobs shouldn't be to disheartened though. They have a choice, there are plenty of jobs out there. It's a case of changing career paths, looking in the right places or being a defeatest and sitting on their arse all day feeling sorry for themselves.

Places like the NHS are constantly recruiting for Health Care Assisstants - may not be everyone's cup of tea, but sure beats the money you get from signing-on.

Learndirect are recruiting for Customer Service Advisors, Learning Support Practitioners and Team Leaders.

Good luck job hunters!

since when, have a look on the job sites and see how many applicants there are applying for each job.. the missus is looking to return to work so i was looking for her and there was over 100 applicants for a lot of jobs.. one that stood out was a basic car park assistant, low pay, yet still 58 applicants,, and that was just figures from the one site.

Yeah, but its not like those 58 applicants are only applying for that one job, is it? I mean, its not the "job of a lifetime" so I'd expect they'd be applying to a number of others too. Besides, its coming down slowly from a spike - its always going to be a case of there being lots of applicants but that the number of available jobs is coming up to match rather than there being not enough people.

I was thinking about the whole working abroad thing the other day. Having just been out to spend time in France again, the language came flooding back, and left me pondering and wishing I kept up learning French and German, even if its just for the ability to hold a good conversation while away. Though the possibility of working in another country, seeing different things, and effectively doubling the area you can work in, is amazing.

Id love to learn Italian and Swedish, but I think I should concentrate on regaining and expanding my French and German knowledge again first......Speaking of which, does anyone know what areas of Munich are the best to stay in, just for a long weekend or something?

Unless you plan on living over here, stick with the French/German/Italian. A lot of Swedish people won't bother speaking to you in Swedish unless you're pretty much fluent - the moment you start to make mistakes they'll just switch to English and the intonation is an absolute bitch, so its really hard to pronouce properly, while in Germany I've always found that people are more forgiving with people attempting to speak German. Been here for 6 weeks and really haven't got to grips with it yet - you'd need to be here a year or so just to hold a basic conversation, although reading and writing is pretty easy.

... and yeah, axing the requirement to do a language GCSE in order to massage the stats when clearly it needs to be taken more seriously and done from a younger age is ridiculous. Yeah it'd be difficult for all the reasons mentioned above, but it'd be worth it.

I applied for a job for a care assistant the other week just to fill my job shee search sheet up. Next day I received an application form. On it it asked how many years nursing experience I had among other things.

I looked at the ad again. I had misread itr. It also asked for somebody fluent in Punjabi which I am not. A driving license was also required. No again.

I phoned the number shown to say I was having difficulty filling the form in. The woman was OK actually when I said I thought the job was unskilled and just helping out the more experienced workers. She said there are unskilled jobs cthat come available some times but none at the moment. I thanked her and said I would keep it in mind.

But regarding jobs available I am struggling to put down applications on my job search sheet. I have no trade, no experience in customer services do not drive and over 60.

If a shop that caters for young people advertise they cannot by law say they want a 18-25 year old female but anyone that does not fit into that criteria will be rejected without looking at the rest of the CV. The same goes for many other jobs. How many 60+ are there working in McDonalds or any fast food shop?

I was told by a job advisor not to apply for car park attendant as there was none available.

I am still waiting to hear from the City about the car park job down there. Although it is only 8 hours a week on match weeks. I could even have less income doing 8-16 hours as it could take a couple of monyjs to adjust benefits, even then I would be no better off.

A friend has said she knows somebody who has something to do with a car park. She is going to ask them.

Because of my age and I'm not so agile a good job for me would be something like in a library or museum sitting behind a desk, but they do not come up very often.

If I drove I agree that there are jobs available. Almost everyone I see says that is a requirement so when looking they are crossed out. Then comes the ones needing certificates. That reduces the possibles by 75-90%.

Anything left come into the catagory first mentioned where the employer are looking for a certain type of person but not allowed to specify because of the equality law. So I may just about be able to do the three job search actions required..

I have my name down for the post office Xmas work and some stores will need more staff so I may get something for a couple of months. Better than nothing I suppose.

I just need to last this way until next July. Although I will still be looking for something I can claim pension credits instead of JSA. I won't be required to report every fortnight and it will be my choice to look for work.

Sorry about the long post. I have refrained from commenting on this subject for the past few weeks as it seems I am banging my head on a wall sometimes with some people.

I am not being negative or defeatist but realistic.

Didn't you work at the charity dmshop for a while? Didn't you get some customer service experience there, or when you were a security guard - surely a customer (internal or external) will have been helped by you allying least once over your career?

It's about re-wording what you have done to fit what they are asking for

My latest poem. As this thread is about jobs or the lack of them it may be appropriate.

The link is to PoetrySoup where I posted it. Some of you will not like it but I cannot help how my feelings come out.

You have to open your eyes to see.

I opened my eyes and wrote my own poem. I hope you like it. It's called "The Entitlement Illusion"

Can't find a job

Someone else's fault!

Dressed like a slob

Someone else's fault!

Didn't go to school

Someone else's fault!

Never learned the rules

Someone else's fault!

Can't afford food

Someone else should pay for it!

Can't afford booze

Someone else should pay for it!

Can't afford a flat

Someone else should pay for it!

Don't wanna pay tax

Someone else should pay for it!

Get some education

I can't do that!

Get some experience

I can't do that!

Get some new skills

I can't do that!

Pay you own bills

LOLOLOLOLOL YOU'VE GOT TO BE JOKING

Get the rich to pay for me

I deserve it, I do

Get the government to pay for me

I deserve it, I do

Get ordinary struggling tax payers to pay for me

I deserve it, I do

I deserve my money

and I deserve yours, too.

Why wait for jobs to become available?

Send a spec letter along with your cv to companies you are interested in applying for. Go direct to websites, not all places advertise their vacancies on job sites/boards.

Last year I was out of work for a couple of months waiting to start a new position. I knew that Calor Gas was potentially recruiting due to it being cold, so I rang them up. I did a stint lugging gas bottles from the back of a truck on to a conveyor belt ready to be re-filled. Not the most glamerous job in the World, but it beat signing on.

Sites like jobs.nhs.uk are always advertising Health Care Assisstant roles, you only have to complete the application form once and then submit it as many times as you like.

Good luck.

Yes maybe right in a way.. I have updated my CV to reflect that. My jobsearches have expanded into different feilds. I have lookrd for jobs for 12 month for things that I can do and qualified for now moving onto things where the ads do not specify any skills that are needed. But the two things that I cannot fool a future employer about is my age and my sex. Would you rather be se served by a 25 year old with big tits or an old man ugly as sin.

I have just looked at one job. Conservationist assistant in a museum. It requires a degree in conservation and p;roof of working in the field of conversation.

In response to Moose. I have an education. I have passed an It course, and a food safety course (still waiting for the certificate). I was told by a job advisor that I could not do a health and safety course as it would mean that I would be unavailable for work. This course would have given me qualifications that I need for jobs that I could do and apply for. A lot ofplaces require this now even for menial jobs like cleaning.

I do want work. I do not want to rely on hand outs. If there are 50 other applicants for the job I have applied for it is not my fault if they are younger a different sex have experience and certificates that allows them to do the job.

I have paid taxes for 40 years prior to last year. I rarely drink. I pay as little as I can for food. I do not want to be out of work but until you are in the same position you do not know how hard it is and have no right to judge others.

Re Health Care Assistant, I mentioned in my post that I applied for a vacancy but it rquired me speaking Punjabi and having a nursing degree. I dot fit ether of them, but it is something I am looking for. There may be something that requires just some training. I don't think they worry about age or sex so that is a plus.

30 plus years in a hosiery warehouse seven years in security. No GCSE's, no university, no degrees no skill trade learnt. Did not need the skill in the warehouse. Just had to match two socks together.

So I cannot go for an accountants job or administrator's. Even some cleaning jobs need a health and safety certificate which I have been told I cannot do a course because I won't be available for work. Most security jobs now require a drving license and if on a building site you need their card which is something like CSS. If I was younger and fitter I could do some sort of labouring but because of a misplaced hip since birth I am unable to handle heavy weights. Never bothered me before because I did not need strength in previous jobs.

The cushy desk jobs are hard to come by and reserved for student graduates. :)

Doing something from home may be an option. It's just finding that something. I may get lucky through my voluntary work wsith the media groups.

Last week or so I was just a bit down and angry because of that scam company. They have not contacted me again which I am glad of if they are a scam.. But my hopes were built up being told I could do something I never thought of trying. Now if they lied I don't know if I could. Although if something similar becomes available I will jump at it. It only involved inputting data and figure into a data base.

Where do you live and what hours / days can you work?

City centre off London Road area and I could be flexible with hours. Part, or full time, days or nights. Just as long as it is regular I only need to work 16 hours before I get tax credits because of my age. So anything above 16 would be good as it would get me off JSA which I detest being on despite what some may think.

May mean cutting down on my social/media voluntary work but I can work that into whatever I do.

I applied for every job even if I didn't have the skills required you never know they may have a vacancy more suited to you in another department it's about getting your C.V out there. I even applied for a job as a sandwich artist (working at subway) lol

Ok mate, would of been able to help you should you have transport or if we had anything in the city centre , which we don't.

Should you be able to get to Magna Park , then let me know

It depends on the times of the buses. I can find out. The only day I could not do if I used a bus would be Saturday night and Sunday daytime. (buses start at 11 am) other times may be ok . Shifts are usually something like 2-10 I think if its warehouse work. Did security up there at one place but was transported. The company stopped that and that is why I left that security firm 4/5 years ago that was.

I am sure I checked Magna Park out and the shifts never fitted with buses. I will recheck. The bus service up there was not very good. Come to think of it now I may have got a bus sometimes if it was where the Royal Mail offices are. I finished about 7AM and walked about 20 min to catch a bus outside the depot.

A couple of shifts would suit me fine. Full time if no choice.
