Job losses in Leicester

Forty-nine people have lost their jobs after JJB Sports closed stores yesterday.

Outlets in Humberstone Gate, Leicester, and at Fosse Park were among 133 UK stores shut after the group went into administration.

Two remaining employees in Leicestershire will help administrator KPMG close the stores.

JJB sold 20 stores to rival Sports Direct International.

David McCorquodale, corporate finance partner at KPMG, who led the sale process, said: "Unfortunately, the level of cash and further operational restructuring required to rescue a more substantial part of the business was too much risk for most interested parties."

Sarah Harrison, city centre director, said: "We are really sad whenever any business is going, especially when it comes to job losses.

"We have had a surge of openings in the city centre recently and are looking forward to the Silver Arcade opening soon so hopefully JJB staff will be able to find jobs elsewhere in the city because of the opportunities that are being created."

That's a shame. Always thought JJB was better than Sports Direct et al, but I'm no expert. Another blow for city centre retail.

I can't see city centre retail surviving at all if businesses the size of JJB are facing selling out.

Sports direct really is the sewer of sports retail.

Every time I've been in and asked anything about sporting goods I may as well have been speaking to Daniel Lambert on acid.

Sports direct is great. Same shit as jjb for half the price

Until only recently have JJB starting competing in prices, I went to both stores the other day and brought some stuff from JJB, but it's all too late, they were always in the past more expensive and that image has held with them.

ah i see what you mean , but i don't think they ever set out to be specialist retailers , more stack em high sell em cheap . you'd be best to do the research first and just go in to buy :D

i bought some karrimore walking shoes for £15 and they were so good I sent for 5 more pairs to keep me going for a few years .

I wouldnt walk in to Greggs and ask them how to make a wedding cake.

Cant see why you would expect anything other than a blank stare from anyone working in Sports Direct, though the thought of Daniel Lambert on acid is pretty good :P

I went in JJB last week, looking for the Barca away shirt...very sexy style.

Only five - seven people in there looking around so no surprise they are struggling.

Fosse Park is worse aswell, especially upstairs hardly anybody on there, apart from staff who look incredibly bored.

Sad times, if you met a girl who worked at JJB she was generally up for it.

Great line, the only time people generally hit Sports Direct these days is when they need a new outfit for the Jeremy Kyle show.

A Leicestershire bakery is set to close with the loss of 200 remaining jobs.

Hundreds of jobs have already gone from RF Brookes in South Wigston since it lost a major contract and was then sold to the 2 Sisters Food Group.

Managers have now said the site was not financially sustainable, and have launched a 90-day consultation with staff.

A union spokesman said experienced workers faced being "thrown on the scrap heap".

The factory, which produces pizzas and pies, has seen a number of strikes over redundancy packages.

Production moved

Tony Lewis, a local member of the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union, said the news was devastating.

"This is bad news for the workers but it is also bad news for Wigston and Leicestershire.

"Some people have worked there for 25, even 30 years, and they are being thrown on the scrap heap, because jobs are scarce. It is just sad."

Much of the production has been moved to Nottingham.

RF Brookes, which had 720 employees before the layoffs, lost a major contract to supply pies to Marks & Spencer in June 2011, prior to the takeover.

Been on the cards since Two Sisters took over, never soundeed like they wanted to continue production, wanted the product list and markt share. Real shame for the poor buggers working there.
