Parafox Posted 7 October 2012 Posted 7 October 2012 I'm considering having my ECU re-mapped and was wondering if anyone else has done this. I have a 58 plate Mondeo 2.0 petrol and, while it's not bad I would like better performance. I was wondering what the difference might be, are there any pitfalls or possible problems and is it worth £250?
kylestyle06 Posted 7 October 2012 Posted 7 October 2012 A 2.0 petrol n/a mondeo will have little to no effect from a remap. Spend your £250 on a upgraded air filter and exhaust system. It will still give a very little gain so to be honest mate if it was me I would not even bother looking into it unless you have ££££'s to spend.

The blurb on the re-mapping sites syas all cars will get a better performance... but then they would, wouldn't they
Saxondale Posted 7 October 2012 Posted 7 October 2012 Remaps can improve power AND efficiency. Cars that come out of the factory are effectively detuned from their optimum - this is because the quality of fuel available varies across markets, an engine consistently running on poor grade fuel would require a below optimum tune, and the manufacturers opt for the lowest common denominator. The only issue you may have is if the car is still under warranty and a remap would, in theory, invalidate the warranty. Before getting it done, assuming this isn't an issue, check the stats for the remap programme specific to your engine to assess whether or not it is worth it.
GLC Posted 7 October 2012 Posted 7 October 2012 My boss paid for my van to get re mapped, I'll be honest, I can't tell the difference

They can't trace a re mapping, well that's what i was told
Saxondale Posted 7 October 2012 Posted 7 October 2012 They can't trace a re mapping, well that's what i was told In theory they can, but it's likely they wouldn't. Though if they were trying to get out of paying out a warrany claim, they might.

I'm beginning to feel like the bloke on the Fast Show who agrees with whatever opinion the previous person said about anything. The other thing I'm hoping a remap will fix is an annoying flat spot around 3000 rpm when pulling away from standing. The engine almost dies and I effectively have to blip the throttle to get past that. Would remapping help?

The engine almost dies and I effectively have to blip the throttle to get past that. Would remapping help? Potentially but not necessarily. Depends how the upgraded map is modelled. Though I would assume the engine in your car uses some form of VVT, the flat spot could just be the nature of this or the transition from one cam to the other.
kylestyle06 Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 Mate regardless of what others say a remap for a 2.0 petrol mondeo will give you around 5bhp. It will not be noticeable and will be a waste of money. Go onto the Mondeo forums and speak to people in the know on your model, and they will tell you the same. Remaps work better on turbocharged cars whether it be petrol or diesel
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 Remmapping your Mondeo will effectively give it the performance of a Ferrari 430 Scuderia. I just want to see if I can get Parafox to agree with me if I'm the last post on here.

I just want to see if I can get Parafox to agree with me if I'm the last post on here. Yes, yes... I'm going to have it done. Now. Immediately. Kyle seems to know what he's talking about, maybe I'd better just leave it... But then so does BornBlue, maybe I should just get it done... (somebody come in and tell me not to waste my hard-earned, otherwise I'm utterly gonna go throught with it.. I am... unless... )
Webbo Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 I'd definitely do it if I was you. (I don't even know what engine re-mapping is)

Zingari Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 Get some colonel bogey air horns, a aerofoil thingy on the boot and some stripes painted on instead
Jon the Hat Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 If it cost less than a couple of grand what have you got to lose? (apart from a couple of grand obviously). You strike me as a wealthy fool (owning a prestieg automobile) and as we know a fool and his money are soon parted. Go for it!
Parafox Posted 8 October 2012 Author Posted 8 October 2012 Get some colonel bogey air horns, a aerofoil thingy on the boot and some stripes painted on instead You must've seen my Carouselmobile. It even had stick-on go-faster curly filigree lines around the door edges

You've convinced me Jon... I'm booking it in... But Kyle says... Hang on, Webbo says...
MooseBreath Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 Why not just buy a better car? You're only a few rungs above putting a bodykit on a 98 Nissan micra with this re-mapping shit (no idea what it is).
kylestyle06 Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 Believe me it will not make a difference. Sign up to passion ford (people who work on these on a daily basis) and they honestly will say don't waste your money . Give it me instead
FoxesAreBlue Posted 8 October 2012 Posted 8 October 2012 It's a known fact that if you put little blue lights in the screen wash jets, a big speaker in the boot and lower the suspension then your at will go twice as fast... I'd try that if I were you. Message sent from the upper deck of the 153 to Market Bosworth.
Parafox Posted 9 October 2012 Author Posted 9 October 2012 I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth it. Thanks Kyle (and those p-takers who took the trouble to amuse me with their input). No, really, thanks

No, really, thanks FT is the font of all wisdom. I doubt if any poster has regretted asking or taking advice from here. I can’t remember even one complaint
