Are we being ripped off? Crispgate 2012

Leicester Mercury

A row has broken out over Walkers's Multipack Deep Ridged crisps, with customers saying they often have less than 10 whole crisps in each 28g multipack bag.

One consumer even claimed he had received only five full crisps in one pack, and many complaints are about the amount of air in each packet.

The outcry has been the subject of a BBC Watchdog investigation and the subject is a hot topic on Twitter under the hashtag "crispgate".

The Leicester Mercury carried out its own investigation and found packs contained between seven and 10 whole crisps, with various fragments and crumbs.

But the Beaumont Leys company said the 28g packs contain the weight of crisps stated and that the air in the bags keeps the crisps from breaking.

A spokesman said: "Walkers Deep Ridged crisps have been designed with deeper ridges than other crisps on the market – this makes them susceptible to some breakage.

"To limit this breakage, we put them into slightly larger packets with some cushioning to protect them, which may give the impression of there being fewer crisps per bag.

On Twitter one user, Hashim, wrote: "I've opened Walkers Deep Ridged crisps with only a quarter filled."

Another user, Gooch, wrote: "Just bought a bag of air and Walkers were kind enough to put a few crisps in there."

lol Knowing the Leicester Mercury I can only imagine how extensive that would have been...

Surely the number of crisps is irrelevant and it's the weight of the edible contents that counts? You don't order a 12oz steak and complain when it comes all in one piece.

These Deep Ridged crisps are horrible. By far the worst lot of crisps I've ever had, and trust me, I've had tons and tons of crisps in my lifetime!

Yes. Although at my age I have to have my meat cut up for me.

I once bought a bag of pork scratchings (!!!) When i opened it there was ONE huge scratching in it, nothing else. But it was the correct weight

They had a packet each! One had 7 and one had 10!! Thorough investigative work as per usual!

lol have to admit that would put me off a bit. It'd be like someone had just ripped a pig's face off and roasted it

Bollocks.

Fish's fingers are shrinking, that's a real concern. I reckon it's something to do with hormones.

Maybe they are cutting their fingernails so that there's not so much poo under them from poor hand washing.
