Chancellor Osborne caught attempting fraud..

"They"?

Where the fvck does "they" come from.

He boarded a train without a ticket for 1st Class.

He boarded a train without the wherewithal to pay for an upgrade.

His little man refused at first to pay for him.

Clearly the intention was to occupy a place he believed he deserved without the intention to personally pay for it.

Osbourne is an odious little cvnt.

Where does they come from? He's taking about all civil servants bring banned ie. everyone. ie. more than one person.

I have boarded a train before without a ticket, and purchased one on the train. Perfectly legal. Does that make me an odious ****? I've boarded a train and paid for an upgrade to to there being no seats. Perfectly legal. Does that make me an odious ****?

Virgin trains have denied anyone refused to pay for a start off.

Secondly, even if the aide did refuse to pay there is the possibility that Osbourne knew nothing about it.

The reporter sitting in standard claims to have overheard the conversation. Which means it didnt take place in the first class carriage. If it did she wouldn't have heard it.

No, no they're not. Not by politicians and definitely not by Tories. They're desperate to convey themselves as a party that represents the broader demographic, not just their stereotypical voter base, and they're going to need to seriously succeed in that to take power.

It's like sending your children to private schools, plenty of middle and upper class people do it and they're arguably right to do so. If you can afford to give your children the best level of education then why wouldn't you? But if you're, for example, the Conservative minister for education all of a sudden it's a different story. It's "education secretary has no faith in public school system," et cetera.

You might not like that that is how the world works but that is how the world works.

I'm not saying that Osborne is right or wrong in this. I myself got fined twenty quid only last week for sitting in the first class section of a Southern Trains carriage from East Croydon to Victoria without a ticket, I'm not for one moment suggesting that this is an act of any evil. I'm just pointing out it's a monumentally stupid thing to do if you're a Tory MP taking part in the mass popularity contest that dictates our country's politics.

And, further more, if I was a Tory voter and a Conservative party member I'd personally be annoyed with Osborne for further enforcing the tired archetypes of the "liberal media" and not defending him against "loony lefties" on internet message boards.

Sorry but your example is in a different league to what he's done.

He was handed a glass of free champagne at a private function for people who donate to the party. There were hundreds of people there handed glasses of free champagne. But someone sneaks a picture on their phone and suddenly it's the worst thing ever.

The way you go on you'd think he'd been taking baths in champagne and wiping his bum with £50 notes.

And then "man pays for upgrade" shock horror. What a horrible man paying for a perfectly legal and inline with policy upgrade.

This is only news because people with an agenda want it to be.

More evidence this is a complete nonsense. 113 Labour MPs, 48 Tories and 19 Lib Dems have claimed first class rail tickets over the past year. Two Plaid Cymru and three Scottish National Party members bring the total to 185. So it is more than twice as likely that "one nation" Labour are travelling first class at our expense than the Tories. So who is it who is out of touch again?

What I can't understand is why a 1st class ticket was purchased originally when he always travels 1st class?

Who knows. People make mistakes.

true and the chancellor has made his fair share.

They said he finished an appointment early and caught an earlier train than planned, which meant he did not have a reserved seat in Standard class. Virgin let you take any train if you can find a seat. The train was full therefore he took the seat in first and paid for it when the inspector came round.

I find that extremely hard to believe in this case.

Are "they" the same "they"?

Surely his original ticket purchase for the later train would have been 1st Class.

Oh dear... Kinda puts paying for an upgrade out of your own pocket into perspective hey.

Why? How do you know he always travels first?

Well I don't other than the reports that said he couldn't, as Chancellor with all his paperwork sit in standard class, if that's wrong and he usually travels standard then as you say it's all a fuss about nothing.

The report Jon put up shows he's not claimed for any first class tickets... But plenty of labour have including Mr Balls his shadow.

But this isn't a "labour are better than conservative" thread. this is a "knock the tory twat " thread.

MPs should be travelling first class anyway, and expensing it to boot.

No matter how much you earn, costs incurred in the performance of your job should be refundable by or directly paid by your employer.

You can't get any work done in a standard class carriage, you can barely open a laptop. I'd rather he spent his journeys working in (comparative) private and claiming for the additional cost than doing a sudoku in standard class just to save a few quid.

If you can't see why the Chancellor might need the space and privacy of first class on a peak time train I'm not going to be the one to explain it to you.

That is just silly ! He is as likely to be overheard talking about invading Iran, (or whatever it is he talks about), in first-class as he is in standard. One could argure it's possibly safer to have that conversation in standard as there's more chance everyone else will be a) asleep. b) playing their ipod. c)Unaware of what or where Iran is !! (teasing before the keyboard warriors appear over the hill). For what it's worth, I always travel standard if a client is paying. A simple lesson I learned many years ago is to spend your clients' money that you claim through expenses as if it's your own. Not sure a couple of extra inches of room is justified for the hike in price here ?? And he is spending our money !!

I'm with ttfn. We pay the guy 150k. I would rather he was working.

Well, if the situation was that Osbourne wanted to work, there wasn't space in cattle class to set up his laptop, so found a table in first class and paid for the upgrade, then there is no problem here, apart from him fvcking up the economy, continuing down a path of austerity that didn't work in the 80s isn't working in Greece or Spain, and is actually increasing the deficit.

He is despicable weasel of a man, and has no qualifications to run the country's economy and it fvcking shows, let him sit in first class, drink champagne and snort cocaine off a rent boy's tits, I don't really care, what I do care about is that he is driving this country backwards, destroying growth and any hope of economic recovery in the process.

Exactly. Big picture, people.

So why doesn't he book a standard seat and work there ? Although, if I'm honest, i'd rather he wasn't working. At all. Period. Well, not in government, at least ! :)

Also, the size of his salary is not a factor. I suspect there are many on here who earn more than that and still disagree with this first-class travel thing. I've earned more than that and never felt the need to sit in first-class when I'm spending someone else's money. And if the work he is doing is that crucial, I think his prioritising is wrong - i don't want our CofEx doing 'crucial stuff' in a public environment !

He's barely able to complete dot-2-dot puzzles unaided and his lips move when he reads. Whatever 'work' he might elect to complete would probably involve colouring pencils.

Turns out he wasn't working he was watching a DVD, but he did pay it out of his own pocket.
