Bob Weasel Fox Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 How the residents of two of the poorest estates in Leicestershire are coping with poverty. http://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/b01p2plw Although i live in Leicester now originally im a Loughborough lad born and bred, know that estate very well. It was quite run down a few years ago, will be interesting to see how its improved
Zingari Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 Scott Walker's let himself go a bit since the heady days of the the Walker Bros in the 60's
jonthefox Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 Is that estate in loughborough called shelthorpe?. Never been , but enough horror stories about it.
Uncle Phil Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 Is that estate in loughborough called shelthorpe?. Never been , but enough horror stories about it. Whenever we played Shelthorpe Lions FC it usually involved a fight on or off the pitch. Think they might have been turfed out of the league.
acooling08 Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 You have to feel for people born into those areas and to those families, as they really don't have much hope of escaping it. Part of me is saying we should be trying to help via government spending. But the taxpayer in me (£12 a month NI on my apprenticeship wage but still!) says they should help themselves before expecting others to do it for them. Go to a part time college course, get a job and make something better of yourself.
Guest MattP Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 Was standard really, showed the volunteers well, they do a great job. The guy who now 'has to work all day' and is £250 worse off really does show what a joke the welfare system had become.
accessory Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 What were the estates mentioned? They were in Loughborough. The thread title is misleading and should be corrected.

Rincewind Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 I'd include the job market too. In fact I'd include anything that does little to help anyone other than MP's, those that operate their business from abroad to avoid paying UK taxes and bankers.
Guest MattP Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 You mean tax system. Not really, the job this guy was doing would more likely have move him into the tax bracket that inculdes the break the Lib Dems got for the poorest in society in the coalition, at best he would have been paying nothing and at worst very little, it certainly wouldn't have been anywhere near £250 a month anyway so I don't think the tax system should take the brunt of the blame. He looked good mind, was amazed when he said he couldn't work (which with him having a job now for 3 months has proven to be completely false whichever way you look at it). Just looked a normal healthy middle aged guy, looks like it's done him some good.

Anyone on less than 80% of the National average salary should be paying tax or NI.
act smiley Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 It is the tax system. People on minimum wage pay to much tax and/or NI. Anyone on less than 80% of the National average salary should be paying tax or NI. Way too much? Come on, with the increased levels of tax-free income recently, the taxes in the UK for min-wage earners are actually very low. Min wage and a 37.5 hr week = £12,070.50 a year, tax of £793.10 NI of £537.42 giving a net income of £10,739.98 which is around 12% taxed. Now, whether all the benefits and rebates are stuctured correctly may be up for debate but the base tax and NI rates are perfectly fine.
