evs_the_fox Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Couple that I've found that haven't been mentioned yet... Alan Woollett, defender, played in 69 cup final. Andy Peake, midfielder, played late 70s to mid 80s. Sep Smith, only played for us, longest-serving captain. According to Wikipedia (yeah, I know), John O'Neill, John Sjoberg and Rodney Fern all started their pro careers with us - does that count?
evs_the_fox Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 I wasn't around when Nish played. He's certainly better than Schlupp, for left back, though. Neither was I. You don't need to be, just be happy that Mattock isn't the best left-back we've ever produced!
dmayne7 Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Andy King didn't come through our academy he came through Chelsea's. Yes he did. He left Chelsea when he was 15 and we signed him. Besides the question was about the youth team so any player to have played for the under 18's technically counts . Don't forget, plenty of teams don't have youth academies, just youth teams
Thracian Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Andy King didn't come through our academy he came through Chelsea's. He played for our Academy lots of times.
dynamark Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Alan Woolett legend in his own lunchtime, didnt look like a footballer ,didnt act like a footballer but was a footballer.rumour has it he would knit his own sweaters. Birch tells a story about him getting lost on the journey from wigston to leicester
Father Ted Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Probably get shot down for this but... Joe Mattock? I know what he's done since he left has left a very bitter taste in the mouth, and he's a bit of a thug BUT when he played for his he really was quite good and I, personally, thought he could become a very good left-back. Waste of talent, and an example as to why you shouldn't leave the club you know at to young an age. Is that why he sat on our bench for most of the League 1 season when Bruno signed? Mattock is and always has been gash

Swalker Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Presuming most people have logan and mattock in their teams
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Presuming most people have logan and mattock in their teams I wouldn't have Mattock in my vomit let alone my team
Guest Col city fan Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 I never rated Mattock every time I saw him. Very average player IMO. Ash Chambers isn't doing bad at York and I wonder whether he'll get better.
Weller in Tights Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 Someone mentioned Stef Oakes. Don't know if its already been said, but he is now playing for Oadby Town. I occasionally catch them and you can see him stroking the ball around with his left foot and it is obvious he has played at a much higher level. Someone also mentioned Mick Duffy, he signed at the same time as Linekar. Duffy at 16-18 was without doubt, a much more skillful player than Linekar. What happened? I have my own theories but I have too much respect for both to enter into a debate.

In fact rumours have it that he is Kamark's dad!
Leicester_Numan Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 That's a bit of a dodgy central defence and everyone has forgotten Richard Smith
Zingari Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Mick Duffy,Steve Whitworth,Nish,Gary L,Martin and Graham Capewell,(WHO!)Dave TomlinThe lad whos dad was in Showwaddywaddy,Few names from the past for you i thought it was Stef and Scott Oakes who were sons of Showaddywaddy member (Trevor Oakes) Was Dave Tomlin too ? Damien Delaney , Paul Reid , Mark Venus Bob Lee ( i'm assuming these were youth team players , not sure though
dynamark Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Only meant stef oakes ZG from memory he was close to being very good left footer, mick duffy would rip through the centre of a defence.Something a bit special about a local lad who played for some youth club making the first team
Zingari Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Was Mick Duffy a stockily built Irish lad with long blond hair? I don't remember him being particularly effective. But then again I was a big fan of Rodney Fern and very few of our fans seemed to be at the time
dynamark Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Strong lad longish blonde hair.pretty sure he was a braunstone lad certainly some of his family lived that way.Didnt last long tbf but he was very direct Dave Tomlin was effectivley a right footed lloyd dyer I like rodney fern and his song of course!!
Guest ttfn Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 What a crap team (except the keeper and the forwards). As much as I rate him, how many other sides of similar heritage would have Andy King in their equivalent team?

He's here he's there I can't remember that song being used before Rodney Were you at Luton that day when city destroyed them ( i think we won 4-1) He played a blinder and not long after we let them buy him for peanuts . edit; Does Ali Brown count as a product of the youth team? He was very good .
dynamark Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 No sadly I recall him being good with the ball on dreadful pitches and scoring a knocky style flick from behind him at the kop end. Some good hairdos in those days
Zingari Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 I don't think there was ever a better mudskipper than Rodney .
Bettsj2 Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 I remember going to Spurs away under Basset and losing 2-1. Stef Oakes was the best player on the pitch. Under O'Neill he was possibly the most improved player. Granted that Lennon and Izzet gave him the time and space to operate but his talent was unquestionable.
Tielemans63 Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Matt Heath for CB? Went to school with Matty and still see him occasionally. Maybe not one of our best but he's a top fella, born and bred in the county and loves the club too.
