davieG Posted 30 July 2005 Posted 30 July 2005 My take on it is this:We obviously do not live in a society where free speech is allowed. Censorship comes in all forms as people have already mentioned i.e. anti-incitement laws and libel laws etc which in the main are well intentioned if not too PC. However, the interesting thing for me is quite the reverse of the initial post. Yes, the majority of us feel distaste towards one side of what was said in another thread but the good thing is look at the amount of posters who spoke up against such drivel, showing the lone voice to be just that - alone. So, power to the forum for re-opening the thread and allowing the right minded individuals to oppose such draconian output. It actually made me feel better about things seeing such unanimity on show. 146620 You beat me to it Hullfox, I agree whole-heartedly with your take of it. I have actually closed the thread now not out of political correctness or censorship but merely that it had served it's time and was becoming repetitive and serving no practical purpose. I'm sure another topic will be initiated in due course.
Rincewind Posted 30 July 2005 Posted 30 July 2005 This is the 'Alf Garnett' syndrome. The programme could not be shown now because of PC. Yet Johnny Speight was not a racist. He wrote the Alf Garnett character as he was to ridicule the words coming out of his mouth. He rarely won an argument and was made to look a fool on several occasions by non-white characters as well as his dim wife Elsie and layabout son-in-law. (who is related to Tony Blair). However there are people in our society who would turn round and say 'He's right you know, he speaks the truth' These people are just ignorant and probably believe everything in the Sun or The Mail. They most likely believe the Mosque down the road is a cover for extremists and that all non-whites only know two words 'social security' These people hold views that cannot be changed. No amount of debate is going to get through to them. The worrying thing though is that they are breeding and passing their views onto their children. People also tend to listen to them during hard times - short of cash, no job etc. There has to be a scapegoat because they themselves are not to blame. We gain a lot of our views and values from our parents. School can change us or confirm our views and values as can when we leave to go out into society. The thread mentioned was good in a way because it showed that people can think for themselves and there were some very good replies. But this person would never back down in a million years and the danger was that the word could get round and others with more extremist views would join in. It is a good time to close the thread because all the arguments against the topic subject have been aired.

I reckon Davie Gibson would still walk into this team!!!
TrickyTrev Posted 30 July 2005 Posted 30 July 2005 I don't belive in freedom of speech, it is a line usually touted by racist and bigots wanting to spread their messages of hate. (perhaps by those hypocritical enough to want to silence a whole religion) I agree that Islamaphobia is bringing down this forum which is why I have tried to tackle the problem head on instead of ignoring it. Granted with little success.

Rincewind Posted 30 July 2005 Posted 30 July 2005 I think we have to remember that these terrorists have been brought up to believe what they are doing is right. Banning a religion that they subscribe to is not going to change their views. What it will do is give them a vocal weapon to recruit more to their cause.
Alexikokopops Posted 30 July 2005 Posted 30 July 2005 If anyone thought my posts in the "Would banning Islam, grind out Islamic extremists?" thread were racist then they should be banned for being a compete moron. Just incase anyone did.

Like most people, I assumed they were ironic. Unfortunately, not all posters appreciate irony. Just be careful in future, else you might find yourself quoted out of context!

Unfortunately both of them assumed that everyone in the audience would immediately recognise the irony. This proved not to be the case.

Guest Posted 31 July 2005 Posted 31 July 2005 Just a word on a day when we are probably all celebrating the capture of alleged Islamic terrorists.A young friend of mine has recently been suffering from a urinary tract infection (probably picked up as long as three weeks ago on her flight from the US to England). All that time and one doctor and two nurse practitioners later, she was still in severe pain to the point of collapse having quite obviously been misdiagnosed. Eventually she passed out and was rushed to hospital where a doctor quickly took tests, ascertained the nature of the infection and prescribed immediately effective treatment. The doctor was a Muslim and I, for one, would have been glad to shake his hand had he not already moved on to help someone else. 146515 I hoped he washed them first! Disclaimer: The above is intended to be a little lighthearted relief from a serious subjuct. If anyone is offended, Lisa would like to apologise in advance for causing this embarrassment.

Your post was excellent BUT I disagree with that bit. The likes of Alan Partridge and Little Britian are still satirising racial ignorance free from censorship. I believe the problems of 'political corectness goen mad' are greatly over exaggerated.

Rincewind Posted 31 July 2005 Posted 31 July 2005 I was not offended Lisa. It was a perfectly good post. If the doctor had been fiddling about with somebody's innards it is perfectly reasonable to expect him to wash his hands before shaking hands with the public. That killed the joke. As to alf Garnett, maybe it could be shown but it would receive a lot of complaints from people who did not understand the irony behind the scripts. Ignorance is all around us. One programme that I was surprised with getting away with things is Father Ted. This ridiculed the Catholic Church to the hilt. Little Britain is a bit close too. In the Fat class sketch. the tutor is such a revolting character that you can't help but have sympathy for the students. The sketch does not ridicule fat people just the concept that they are inferior. It is the way that the humour is put across that matters. I've used the word fat several times. I apologise to any obese person that may be offended. I'd treat you to a slap up meal but you may be on a diet so I wont offer.
Deathside Posted 2 August 2005 Posted 2 August 2005 I believe that this thread should be returned to the top of the pile
lush Posted 2 August 2005 Posted 2 August 2005 I once believed that all users of these boards were tolerant, rational human beings capable of reasoned discussion. Sadly it appears I was wrong... A small minority of users are exploiting their access to this forum to spread vile, racist, poisonous filth. They need to be stopped, before they do further damage to this site and to our club. It is simply NOT acceptable for anyone to call for a certain religion to be banned, even if acts of terror are committed allegedly in the name of that religion. PS Muzzy Izzet's a Muslim. Or have FOXES forgotten him already? 146445 Hi everyone. Ive just read through all the posts, and would FIRST of all like to say what a wonderfully produced website this is, ive NOT seen better, 10/10 for davieg!! I hope thats one million percent clear, and that in NO way are the threads and words ive posted is intent to harm!!! So in response to the topic in question (as its clearly aimed prodomanently towards me?). Ultra seems to think im not tolerant etc, is it fair to say that he isnt for having a go at me? maybe, maybe not. What i think he needs to understand is, that people have a human right to use their basic human right, until the producers of this fantastic site say otherwise. If he reads the title of a thread and thinks he may not like to read it (for fear he may be upset) then he need not open it, simple. He then makes out i use this site to spread vile`racism`. Do you know me? Can you quote racism from me? No, so are you then being intolerant? If davieg wants to ban religous chat, fine lets ban football chat. If its not for someone to call upon a religion to be banned (in the name of peace) then you can never ever ban anything, because to someone, everything has a religious belief. If Muzzy is a muslim, good luck to him. Hes actually my favourite all time city player (stearman is going to takeover him im sure). I actually have little faith in Muzzy right now, he left us for better things, and got all city fans to applaude him by saying `the leicetser city fans are brilliant`. Tell us something we dont know If he truly cared about city`s fortunes he would stay, hes a multi-millionaire, its not as if he needs premiership wages. In future, if you feel you might be offended by a topic, dont click on it and offend me.
