Dan Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 Arsenal genuinely need the money this season in which their qualification will give. They are losing ground on Chelsea, both Manchester clubs and maybe even Spurs. I guess to an extent that's why their fans and players were celebrating so dramatically but again, it all boils down to the money the sponsors and TV companies dish out. They've been losing ground for years. They've done everything for the money for years - yet don't spend it. They've lost ground already and coming 4th isn't the answer. The way they surrendered the League Cup this year was a complete embarrassment on their behalf.
seenitall Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 No one cares about the FA cup now the big teams field their ressies for it. Also, it would be a far better competition if the fourth Champions League place was part of the prize rather than the Channel 5 cup
whoareyaaa Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 For a team like us to get into the CL that would be special so voted CL and Arsenal.
Dan Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 Noone really cares due to fans being brainwashed into how good the premiership and champions league really is. If more fans could think for themselves they'd fade into less importance This. They'd stop churning out the embarrassing "best league in the world" myth as well. The Premier League is a joke.
Dan Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 No one cares about the FA cup now the big teams field their ressies for it. Also, it would be a far better competition if the fourth Champions League place was part of the prize rather than the Channel 5 cup Agree with that as well. I'd give England three 'Champions' League places and make them for the winners of the Premier, the League Cup & the FA Cup seeing as that actually makes you 'Champions' of something. How can a team who comes 4th be considered for the 'Champions' League? I find it quite sad that clubs now look at money instead of honours, everything football shouldn't be.
TrentFox Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 The spread of voting says a lot ! Most want FA Cup, but then don't want to be Wigan ! Interesting. I'd take top 4 all day every day. A fabulous league position over a cup win for me. And I disagree that this is all we are capable of becoming. Right now, that may be as far as we can dream, but I would be extremely confident that if we ever cemented a top 4 league position, the next level of dreaming would commence. new investors and development would be sought, stadium expansion would be embraced, different calibre staff enrolled etc etc. Striving for more is part of our human DNA - it's what we do. I subscribe to an 'unlimited potential' perspective. It's the dream that sets us free.
ScouseFox Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 I'd rather win the FA Cup as a fan of us. If I was a fan of Arsenal right now I'd take 4th over the FA Cup any day of the week. They need 4th place, we quite clearly don't. So I guess it depends on the scenario. If we'd got ourselves into Arsenal's position, 16 years in the CL or whatever it is and we needed CL football to keep our players, sign more players and get money then we'd all take 4th place. You'd be stupid not to. In our position now as a club who clearly doesn't rely on Champions League football because we've never been anywhere near it then obviously we'd all "dream" about winning the FA Cup not finishing 4th. It's entirely down to circumstance. I'd rather support Arsenal this year than Wigan though. They got relegated and everyone will leave. Future don't look too bright.

If we had won the FA Cup it would have been the biggest party Leicester has ever seen.
Voll Blau Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 Wigan fan on BBC North West Tonight just now... "Teams go up and down the leagues all the time, but once your name's on the Cup it's on there forever." Too true.
Dan Posted 20 May 2013 Posted 20 May 2013 Definitely the biggest gap in our history. I'd say we're the biggest club to have not won it - that's if you say we're a bigger club than Fulham and Birmingham.

You don't know that anyone will leave Wigan yet and considering the parachute payments they'll get, which come under the heading of revenue, they won't be paying out over 60% of it in wages. They're very well placed to go straight back up. They're certainly much better placed than us and we've been made second favourites by one bookie to go up, again, what a bloody joke.

Can see all three relegated teams being in the top 6 next season.
indierich06 Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 Agree. Can see all three relegated teams being in the top 6 next season. True, but that's what we thought this season. I thought Wolves, Bolton and Blackburn were all set up to absolutely piss on this league from a great height - and look at how that turned out. If Wigan can keep Martinez, I think they'll do well. Who would they get in if he goes to Everton or to another PL club though?

Who would they get in if he goes to Everton or to another PL club though? Again, true. But I just feel that the financial backing of the clubs coming down, plus parachute payments which give them more options in an era of FFP, plus some seriously talented managers (as it stands today) means they may not ship players out the way previously relegated teams have. As always, only time will tell. Hopefully, they will shed players and managers at an alarming rate during the summer ....I just have a sneaky feeling that they won't, though !
TrentFox Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 Sorry - didn't pick up on your 'who would replace Martinez' point. Almost anyone that is out of work would probably fancy that gig. Don't think the size of the crowd would affect a manager's thinking about it. Whatever we think of DW, he stood by Martinez. And he has dosh !
indierich06 Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 Again, true. As always, only time will tell. Hopefully, they will shed players and managers at an alarming rate during the summer ....I just have a sneaky feeling that they won't, though ! I think Reading and Wigan will be able to keep the vast majority of their squads together, but QPR are going to have do some serious work on theirs. There's no way they can afford to pay players like Samba, M'Bia and Remy while in the Championship, nor would they want to stay I'd imagine. Think QPR could struggle next season - looking forward to the biggest fraudster in the game, Mr Harry Redknapp, getting found out for the crap manager he is.

tomtom Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 Football is about winning trophies for me, not money! (Its not like we see any of it or that your ticket price comes down) So I'd take winning the F.A cup over 4th place Saying that once we've actually won the F.A cup would my answer change?
ScouseFox Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 You don't know that anyone will leave Wigan yet and considering the parachute payments they'll get, which come under the heading of revenue, they won't be paying out over 60% of it in wages. Dan Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 So were Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves... Blackburn certainly weren't. Wolves were an absolute joke though. They raised a serious amount of money through player sales, how the hell they've managed to go down is beyond me.
indierich06 Posted 21 May 2013 Posted 21 May 2013 Blackburn certainly weren't. Wolves were an absolute joke though. They raised a serious amount of money through player sales, how the hell they've managed to go down is beyond me. The manager was a bit of a clown, no doubt, as well as the owners, but that playing squad was easily, easily amongst the best in the division. Shame they had those clowns running the club from India without a clue what they're doing.
Leicester_Numan Posted 22 May 2013 Posted 22 May 2013 So were Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves...Blackburn were a disaster in the boardroom.Bolton signed Matt Mills, enough said. Wolves are a complete mystery, that squad should have been challenging for promotion. Again, it was probably down to a disaster in the boardroom and poor managerial appointments. Wigan are a different kettle of fish though, a very stable club with a sensible chairman and a good manager. If they keep everything together, I think they'll be champions. They could just as easily do a Wolves if they lose Martinez though
Dan Posted 22 May 2013 Posted 22 May 2013 Blackburn were a shambles from top to bottom. No club in a state like that will get near promotion.
foxes4e4 Posted 22 May 2013 Posted 22 May 2013 In 20yrs time nobody will know if you qualified for the Champions League in 2013, or if you spent 9 or 8 yrs in the Prem. The FA Cup however would always be on your honours list. my reasoning completely
deanolegend1989 Posted 23 May 2013 Posted 23 May 2013 Reading will be jack average. Average squad and Adkins has only got promotion once, this will test him. Can easily see them being 8th-12th. QPR have a top manager in Redknapp but they will change alot of players, hard to predict these, could walk the league could struggle. Wigan are set to go straight back up, if they lose a few key players(Kone, Figuroa, Mcmanamen, Maloney) and Martinez, then they are very average. If they keep the lot though, they will walk it..A bit like we did keeping Izzet, Dickov, Deane, Elliot, Taggart etc...if we lost a few we wouldnt of walked it. I think we have a great chance next season for top 2..let alone top 6! Other than Wigan and maybe Bolton..I think we have a great chance..QPR may be alright, Forest, Brighton and Watford(if they dont go up)...the rest very average, a few could be decent if they get some players in..who would of predicted Hull, Watford, Palace and Charlton so high? I think we have all the ammo to fire ourselves to the premier league..if we dont get top 2 I think it will be a failure.
