Assists last season [some statistics]

We seem to have no creativity in the squad this year, so I thought it would be interesting to have a look to see where the majority of them came from last year. These were our leaders in assists last season (people with more than one assist)

Ben Marshall - 8

Lloyd Dyer - 6

Chris Wood - 6

Konchesky - 5

Waghorn - 5

Knockaert - 5
Nugent - 5

Drinkwater - 4

James - 4

Vardy - 3

King - 3

Out of our top 7 assisters (is that even a word?) last season, 6 of them either don't start in the first XI or are no longer at the club.

I've got to admit, I'm not seeing a lot of creativity in our current side this season. I'm not sure if the assists are meant to come from the wing-backs, but from what I can tell, De Laet got 1 assist last season (same as Kasper!) and Schlupp didn't get any. Similarly, our central midfielders (Drinkwater/James/King) didn't exactly get many between them. So it does leave me wondering, where are we expecting the goals to come from in this side? Are we lacking creativity?

Just my thoughts - I'd be interested to hear what other people think.

So what you're saying is, Waghorn needs to start?

Now this is a thread I can get behind.

I think we have creativity the problem is movement off the ball, if drinkwater or knocky etc are looking forward looking for a pass and no one is moving then gets closed down you have to turn and play it back cuz your gunna lose the ball.

That cant be right. Ben Marshall was shite according to the majority on here. A good deal gettong a million pounds for him apparently :-(

I can't remember Marshall playing enough last season to have the most assists.  In fact, I can't remember anything Marshall did last season.

But I suppose the stats don't lie.

I posted a table of assists in the summer.

What it showed, I think, was that Marshall was our ONLY player to appear in the top 25 'assisters' over the 2012/2013 season.

And I made the point that this showed a real lack of creativity in the side, which needs to change.

People praise the likes of King, and rightly so in some respects. But hes not an 'assister'. We sorely need that player who can cooly slot in our strikers to take goals. Then again, we've needed such a player for years.

These stats DO MATTER, whoever tries to deny their importance. They replace opinion and bias with accurate facts and figures of players real importance to teams.

For example, most people (including myself) haven't shed a tear at Marshall going. However, when you appreciate that he was a decent source of our goals last season, the picture changes somewhat.

They don't tell the whole story, but certainly tell part of it. And, when interpreted properly, demonstrate who is contributing to the team and how.

I thought at the start of the season Marshall was the most creative player and possibly most technically talented player we had, however with it clear Pearson wasn't going to play him seems like we might as well take the money and run. However, Marshall will turn out to be a top player and playing prem football in a few years... Will we do the same? I'm not so sure!? Is it pearsons fault? Nobody outside the club knows? All I know is that last season was the season to get promoted as the amount of quality teams in the league this year has grown hugely with the likes of Qpr, Wigan and reading. If we even manage to get a play-off place this year I think Pearson would deserve a knigthood!

Assists are a VERY misleading stat, no idea why people put so much emphasis on them. Key passes seems like a far more important stat to see who the more creative players are.

Assists don't have to be made by midfielders.

The assists stat is again, a good indicator of a strike force playing as a partnership.

If the two strikers are assisting each other (like Fryatt/Howard) it shows they are on the same wavelength.

Assists are the most key passes of all, surely?
