Merging Cultures Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 How the F do people get funding to study such rubbish? I would think it was just too obvious. Probably why I don't make loads of money though. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24061992 A team of researchers who found that people think they are more attractive when drinking alcohol, have scooped an Ig Nobel prize for their work The researchers from France and the US confirmed the "beer goggle effect" also works on oneself.
Fox92 Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 They do research some rubbish. I think most people could have told you this without even researching.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but until they actually have scientific proof of it, based on research with credible scientific basis, it is just anecdotal evidence. It is not rocket science, but without this study it is just speculation. A friend of mine did an entire PHD on studying an amino acid, it had never been studied before, mainly because it was so close in structure to an amino acid that had been studied it was obvious it was going to act in the same way, and he spent 3 years proving it behaved exactly as everyone assumed it would, but without that they wouldn't be able to state as fact that it behaves that way. Ya get me?

Ya get me? I get that, amino acids are important, we need to understand how they work. Do we need to REALLY know this?
Captain... Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 Yeah that's fine, but did it deserve an award? The Ig-noble awards are taking the piss and are awarded to the most pointless/stupid research.
Rincewind Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 Yeah that's fine, but did it deserve an award? I'd like to see what the losers were. Edit. That explains it CPF
Captain... Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 I get that, amino acids are important, we need to understand how they work. Do we need to REALLY know this? No of course not, but it is a unique study that has never been done before, my point was it may be obvious, but until it is scientifically researched it can't be used as fact. Of course there are probably more important things to study at the moment, but I can understand how someone would get funding into a unique study on the social effects of drinking alcohol.

You make good points. The social effects of drinking alcohol are important to understand. However, I do think, as you said, there are more important things to be studying. Perhaps, someone can study Leicesters 3-5-2 formation...
davieG Posted 13 September 2013 Posted 13 September 2013 My concern is that many of these research subjects involve so few people that i hardly think it makes it an undeniable fact and yet we're daily bombarded with how good/bad the same thing is for you especially in the area of food and drink making the whole research pretty pointless or at least not worth publishing.
