Exactly. We don't need reminding what position we are in in every thread.

My view of the game:

We defended well and were on top going into the last 10 minutes. When the second penalty was awarded and it was a harsh one I think the lads felt this wasn't going to be their day. Although it's a bad attitude to have I can understand why they switched off for the last 9 minutes. It's different to the way we've conceded late goals in the past. They were conceded when we were leading/drawing and sat back on the lead. Today we conceded the second when we were on top and then the other two added insult to injury. First game of the season, we lost but I've taken a lot of positives from it. Some of the passing and chances we created at the start of the second half would've been unimaginable a few months back and our defending was good until the last ten minutes. If we play like that against Stoke on Tuesday I'm confident we'll win.

I'm impressed and happy by the way we played, We can win and play well throughout the season IF we keep it up, However Leicester City have alot of problems with consistancy!

I just feel downhearted and not bothered by todays game thanks to the referee, The referee (Surprise, surprise) ruined the game again, I admit the first penalty was a penalty, but we pulled it back to 1-1 and we we're strong, the second penalty wasn't a penalty, since when has handball been your chest/shoulder  and since when has the rule of handball changed I thought if it was ball to hand and the player couldn't really help it it wasn't handball - I'm not saying if the referee didn't give the penalty we would yhave won or drawn because who knows, but thanks to the referee we will never know what would and could have happened! Something about referees NEEDS to be done and needs to be done A.S.A.P! The amount of time Sheffield Utd players pulled Leicester shirt and the amount of decisions the ref gave Sheff Utd.

Happy with the proformance but thanks to ref none of that counts and he(The ref) has overshadowed the game!

Hi Matt,

now that the shock has somewhat subsided, I too want to focus on the positive and look forward to the next game.

There was lots of good stuff in there today. Hopefully, the team will have learnt a few things from today's experience (e.g. not to lose their heads, even in the face of dubious decisions by the referee) and this is likely to come in handy in future matches (particularly regarding improving consistency).

;)

the 2nd penalty was an absolute joke

No question about that!

Even the Sheffield supporters behind me thought it was not a penalty!!!

No,no,no. Think about it. Changes were made in that last 10 minutes (Leicester's without apparent reason, Sheffield's with the simple aim of attacking for all they were worth).

Leicester became unsettled. The penalty might have been harsh (might even have been a refereeing "even it up") but there might have been a third penalty from what I saw and the fact was, Sheffield swamped through our defence in the closing stages.

Instead of coolly dealing with attacks "high up" as was the supposed plan, we were left diving around in a penalty area that became a mass of bodies where anything could happen.

Douglas had no space (when he should have demanded and organised it) and our shape disappeared completely.

Warnock won that game from the sidelines and CL played into his hands.

My take on this one.

Douglas - was poor made 2 critical mistakes conceding the 1st penalty and 4th goal.

Maybury - Good defending but slow and hesistant when in possesion

Rest of defense looked very solid until the 2nd penalty

Wilcox - Looked very good, distribution excellent.

Syllia - Outstanding pace and attitude, will be a key player for Leics.

Williams - Positive at going forward.

Godjhannsen - Felt was poor, weak link in midfield

Connoly - Stood out, took his goal well still having to make too many moves tho.

Devries - Good at holding the ball up which I think is his primary role, however probably had the most chances in the game out of all strikers on the pitch and should have scored.

Elvis - Came on too late to make an impact.

Conclusiion - Felt we played very well and were starting to dominate the game until the shock 2nd penalty, after that the team fell apart at the back and didnt recover causing the the last 2 goals.  The goalie looks unconfident which isnt a good sign and dublin might be better starter then devries.

I agree with most of that. CL should not be playing Maybury at LB. Douglas needs to buck his ideas up because that level of performance is poor, not only for the goals but also for the hesitancy on any number of occasions. Johanssen looked good as did McCarthy (most of the time).

Gudjonsson will never be good enough and he allowed Sheff U to get into the game more in the second half. Williams was very good. Sylla and Wilcox were fine though Sylla did not get enough ball.

Connolly is player I have never really rated but I thought he was very good today and finally I cannot understand the anti de Vries hysteria, as if that performance today is truly the worst by a City player or he is the worst City player of all time, then we will playing Champions League football in a couple of years time. lol lol ;)

S - strengths - defense and midfield

W - weaknesses - the choice by CL of Maybury at LB, the LB position and the inability to convert the pressure we had for 20 mins between the 55th and 75th minutes. Gudjonsson. Worst of all Douglas.

O - opportunities - we created any number of chances and had any number of dead ball situations. We dominated for long periods and generally bossed the game for 80 mins.

T - threats - The inability of the side to capitalise on the dominace of the general play towhit goalscoring. The LB position and CL playing the wrong player in that position today. Players not hungry enough - both Webber and Ifill looked more up for it than our defence.

Sheffield deserved it by about 2-1, it was a freak result, however there are elements in it that bode well in some cases and bode ill in others. Five out of ten, must do better.:huh::ph34r::unsure::rolleyes:

Seems a fair view to me.

Given we had Tiatto and Hughes out, the performance wasn't too bad.

Once again Warnock put a referee under pressure. And once again he succumbed.

There wasn't a lot ANY side in this league could have done about that!

Thanks for posting my comments, I did have concerns when we changed what was a settled defense, but I dont think thats what caused us the match, the bad refereeing and inability to convert dominance into goals. However as said on other forum if we play like this rest of season we will get results.

I thought Gudjonnsson had a good game. When Hughes and Kisnorbo are back, the midfield (the biggest positive about today imo) will be even stronger. The forwards had improved, but Dublin maybe could have aided Connelly more than De Vries did, the defence did look a bit shaky, but I'll put that down to the central pairing never having played together before. Douglas was the main weakness, although he did make a few good saves. Who knows? Maybe it was just a poor performance? But if he carries on like this, I'm sure Henderson will be the starter before too long.

Disagree on Gudjohnsen, thought that was his best game in a City shirt. The game was lost because of a) Douglas - he became a liability at Celtic and he will be for us, 2 goals down to him today and they will not be the first. Predicition is that after furthers blunders he will be replaced but how long will it take CL to act. b) An appalling decision by the Ref, he will look at the replay and hang his head.

Otherwise there was a lot of promise...just got to sort the keeper out!

Apart from Deep Freeze and Douglas I thought City played well and could have still got at least a draw. After the Dodgy second penalty the heads dropped, same old story.

Please can De-Vries shoot when in the box instead of trying to beat all 4 defenders and walk it into the net

Lets not forget this is day one and we are level on points with palace, and one behind Norwich and Southampton who are all favs to go up.

it's nice to learn these things early on in the season, a win on tuesday and we will be up at mid-table, i hope these sort of performances will bring us wins though

Yep he did, I know and it won't do the slightest bit of diffence but I have sent an e-mail to the FA and the FL telling the about the shocking referees and ideas on how to help referees out (i.e TV Replay) I have not been bias because in my e-mail I have listed all the bad decisions, e.t.c, and I have listed Leicesters goal as one of the bad decisions as well, so in the e-mail I have sent I have tried to be as inpaticial and as unbias as I can, I know sending the e-mail won't do anything, I doubt i'll get any reply or response from the FA/FL because I have never had a reponse in the past but sending the e-mail let alot of steam off!

They just collapsed after that harsh decision for the second penalty. Douglas Maybury and McCarthy I thought could have been better. I couldn't really fault anyone else, De Vries wasn't crap he was just frustrating to watch as usual, I think we should start Dublin up with Conolly. De Vries needs to improve his final ball. I'm sure he had everyone screaming at the telly when he was prancing around in the area for five minutes trying to get a shot off in that second half while it was still at 1-1. Remember, we got nailed 6-1 away to Ipswich in the third game of our last promotion season so we've had worse I guess. I expect us to beat Stoke at home though.. particularly with Hughes back.. once everyone's fully fit etc I'd like to see..

Douglas

Stearman Gerrbrand Johansson Gilbert

Sylla Hughes Williams Tiatto

Conolly Dublin

I think that's about the best team we could field with all our best available players in tact.. apparently most of the squad should be available for the Ipswich game next saturday. :D

At the end of the day.. we may be bottom but I'd rather be bottom at the start of the season than at the end of it.. and atleast Garth Crooks said he thought 4-1 was very flattering to the Blades... normally we'd have to put up with everyone harping on about how Sheffiled United got off to a flyer...
