Comet Ison - possible "once in a generation" event

Has anyone seen the comet ?

I've been looking for it over recent days, but there's a lot of light pollution where I live, so haven't seen it yet.  :(

The BBC says:

If we're lucky, then in just a few days time we could witness one of the most spectacular sights in the night sky for a generation or more.

Astronomers hope that on 3 December a comet will appear on the eastern horizon - Comet Ison.

For the whole month of December, millions of people across the northern hemisphere should be able to see its tail, which is several millions of kilometres long, stretching across the dawn sky.

It might break up when it passes the sun and we'll see nothing much.

On the other hand, it might be a once in a lifetime lightshow - enough to prompt the people of Derbyshire to point at it, sacrifice some animals to it and divorce their sisters...

There seems to be quite a few once in a lifetime and once every 20 year events to do with comets and meteor showers.

I'm a bit bah humbug about all this....

This is true - and that's part of the fascination, really. There are a LOT of comets/meteors out there, but because space is so fookin big, they don't drop by very often. For me that speaks a lot about how small we are, both in size and lifetime, compared to what's out there.

Scary and fascinating at the same time. It's just a shame really that we only really started looking into space as a by-product of researching new ways to kill each other, and now its deemed insignificant, when the future of humanity itself could well rest on looking into it more.

You might be looking too early, as the quote says most of December?

Just caught the end of horizon dealing with astoroids. they said if a big one hit they don't have a plan to evacuate. Because many are dark colour they would not be seen until 2 or 3 days before impact.

going bed now. Sleep well.

It's hardly worth worrying about is it?

Nope, the one that ends civilisation or wipes out humanity entirely is the one we probably won't see until it hits the atmosphere about a half second before impact. Not worth worrying about something you can't control.
