The future's blue and white!...........not 'grey' - Yuck!

Grey ! Yuck!

The colours of Leicester City F.C. team have been traditionally and are long established as blue shirts and white shorts unless, as the ‘away’ team where there is a clash of colours, it is then accepted that it is the visiting team that is obliged to change.

But for the team to turn out in ‘Grey’ is to my mind absolutely potty. This decision has nothing to do with distinguishing between two teams but is driven purely by and for reasons of commerce.

As the teams emerged at the start of the game at Hillsborough, I didn’t realise that both teams were on the pitch but then seeing these almost ghostly apparitions purporting to be Leicester City darting here and there like shadows, chasing the far more unmistakeable Wednesday players in their brighter blue and white stripes, I became increasingly irritated as this insipid wishy-washy colour  seemed to reflect more and more the insipid wishy-washy display by the Foxes.

The first three minutes however were brilliant as Knocky cut through their defence to score. I now realise that this was probably because the Owls weren’t fully aware of the Foxes presence as opposed to having gaping holes in their defence.

The colour ‘Grey’ has no place in the history of Leicester City. I’ve followed Leicester since September 1949 and I don’t remember ever seeing them play in a ‘grey’ kit.

I suppose there was one occasion however when City were seen to play in grey. They beat Swansea 6 – 1. That was when City appeared for the first time on the television when BBC’s  Sportsview showed the highlights. But that was 12th November 1955! We had to wait four more years before colour TV.

But I had actually been to the game that day and City were definitely in Blue and White.

I remember in particular the advent of floodlighting to Filbert St.  In the first match v BV Borussia (Dortmund), City were in Blue shirts and White ‘knickers’. BVB were in their traditional Yellow Shirts and Black ‘knickers’.

The second match was more interesting because although City played in their usual strip, Beogradski wore ‘Light Blue and Dark Blue Shirts and Blue ‘Knickers’.

There were then quite a few occasions when the City appeared in a 100% all White kit. Especially under lights, it looked absolutely fabulous and no more so than when we thrashed Bristol City 5-1, scoring 5 goals in twenty minutes in a re-arranged 4thround  F.A. Cup –tie January 30th 1961.

Regretfully when it wasn’t ‘all white on the night’ was when we lost 3-1 to Man Utd in the ’63 Final.

The very first Leicester team to appear in 1884 wore Black jerseys with a diagonal blue sash and long white trousers but for the 1886/87 season, the colours were changed to chocolate and blue halved shirts. Then for the 90/91 season, the colours were changed to White Shirts and Dark blue trousers.  As the Club progressed, there were futher changes, possibly the most significant being the shirt which was Dark blue with a light blue and sleeves.

So I say:

The future’s bright

The future’s blue and white..................certainly not grey!

It's just the modern way. Clubs are coming out with all these funny colours for away kits - maroon, pink, lime green, grey and black have become increasingly popular for some reason, even though most of them look pretty shit.

I don't like it either, in Leicester's case I don't see what's wrong with the old traditionals: blue and white home, white & blue away, and either yellow or red for 3rd.

And I miss white socks on our home kits.

Our last four promotions have been in an all blue kit

I love how people post 'Cardiff fans stood by all the change', yet I think people fail to see somesort of branding is slowly happening to us... I mean, we had our club legends replaced with a basic King Power banner, we had elephants outside the ground at one point and now our away kit has King Power colours.

I understand the owners care about the club, but I also believe that they are using our club to enhance their business in Europe. I mean, if the end result is getting their King Power empire into Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham airports then I think they will be happy.

I care more about the home kit than the banners outside the stadium and a traditional lack of elephants.
