Leicester Riders.

Couldn't find a thread on them yet. I like to support any local Leicester/Leicestershire team in any sport, but I've been specifically drawn to them recently.

Since they were showing promise last I latched on and it all seems like quite a bit of fun. The sport itself is very fast paced and engaging, whilst the atmosphere seems quite 'fun', although on a different level to football, and I'd imagine it would be quite fun. Obviously on top of that they've hit a purple patch in recent years and look to be one of the more dominant teams in British Basketball.

Although through living in Hinckley and a general lack of effort, I've never been to a game but today they had their game away at Plymouth free with a promo code on the BBL website. Watched online and it was really good, ran away with it a bit but nearly got caught out, a good watch.

So as I've just seen it I thought I'd set up a thread to talk about games/general talk for the Riders.

To finish, has anyone actually been to a game? And if so, was it enjoyable and would you go again?

If you use the search function you'll find at least 13 Riders topics to choose from.

I used that and the sort of things to come up were threads completely unrelated. The closest was a NBA thread(?), which isn't relevant to the Riders.

Whether the mobile version is different though I'm not sure.

EDIT: there was one on the Riders but it was on one game/final. I though setting up a new one which would cover everything would be better. Apologies if it was inconvenient.

I found 10 on my phone.

It's not really a big issue I just thought I'd take the opportunity to bring up the search option as some don't seem to know it.

But you used it hence why i didn't/haven't merged this topic so fair enough.

I posted this yesterday http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/topic/84169-leicester-riders-in-talks-over-plans-for-grace-road-arena/#entry2808218

Going to my first game in January, basketball never interested me before the last 6 months or so when I really got into the playoffs with miami heat and SA spurs. Love it now.

Never seen an NBA game either. Although from what I saw last night the sport in general seems quite fun in terms of entertainment value. The game itself is so fast paced and active that it always keeps you watching. Riders were losing by 9 points last night and were 10 points up 10 minutes after. It's not like watching a 90 football match of two teams dogging it out for a draw. It's gone up a few places in my favourite sports recently.

And then there's the cheerleaders as well....

I can never find what I'm looking for with the search function

Are you using the more advanced search which is accessed by clicking on the 'star' at the side of the magnifying glass top right hand corner?

Just start new threads, the mods can then merge, it keeps them on their toes.

Sooooo, how are the Riders getting on?

Won 70-60 today against Glasglow Rocks. Puts them second, a win behind first place with two games in hand against the team above them and one against the team below.

Won 41 of their 46 games in 2013 as well. Not a bad record. :)

I would recommend getting into Basketball/  I've been playing at different levels now for 25 years, still play (try to play) but coach more now.

Leicester is very lucky with a good team to follow and a very good youth setup with opportunities for lots of ages.  Also have a very strong local league team.

Eurosport 2 is showing BBL games, not sure what time and i don't think its live but worth recording and watching

Really enjoyed going saturday night, apparently it was a bit of a classic so that probably helped but I'll definitely go more often now.

Against Sheffield? Good result. Puts them in a good position over the Sharks and if they manage to win their two games in hand they'll go top. Looking fantastic again this year and couple easily do the quadruple this year. Combine their current squad with all the youth projects and the likes it looks as if Riders could become a dominant force in British Basketball.

Big ups to Paternostro as well. Been a great coach in the 5 years he's been here and really turned it round.

Yeah against sheffield. They looked like a very good team as well. Cracking atmosphere as well, not what I expected. Really hope they get a new arena soon though as the JSC looked like an old clapped out gym. Will be at the next match too.

The new arena is supposed to hold 2,000 so that'll be good. I'd expect it will stil be pretty much full at 2,000 as well if the success keeps coming. It's looking good for the Riders at the moment.

Grace Road is hopefully the location they choose. Would help the cricket and the Basketball if that was the case. Also a good location for me to travel to.

BBL Cup champions 2014!

Very good win considering they were 12 points down early in the fourth quarter. One step closer to the quadruple now!

Team spirit must be fantastic to come from that far behind in the 4th. Maybe would have gone today if january wasnt such a tight month! Quality team and coaching right now.

Leicester Riders have secured a grant of £840,000 from the Government's regional growth fund to go towards their new £4.2million arena.

The backing, courtesy of Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP)'s £21million of the Government's fund, will complement the £1.5m from Leicester City Council, £500,000 from Leicester College, £360,000 from the Leicester Riders and a potential £1m from Sport England, subject to planning permission.

Work on the new arena, due to be built on a four-acre council-owned plot in Charter Street near Leicester College’s Abbey Park campus, is due to start by the end of the year.

Riders are hoping to move into the new 2,300-seat arena for the start of next season.

As well as being new home to the Leicester Riders and Leicester Cobras Wheelchair basketball teams, the Leicester Community Sports Arena will also serve as a large multi-use venue for the College and the local community.

Riders director Kevin Routledge said: “We are absolutely delighted with the funding support from LLEP, which is critical to the viability of the overall project.

“The signing of the contract with LLEP is a key milestone in this project, and the partners, Leicester Riders, the City Council and Leicester College, are very appreciative of the support we are receiving.

“Once built, the Arena will provide significant numbers of jobs and regeneration of the Charter Street area of the city, as well as significantly increased sporting opportunities. We are now building real momentum of the project, with a number of other important milestones anticipated to be completed in the next few weeks.”

Kevin Harris, Chair of the LLEP’s regional growth fund grant panel said: “This Leicester Community Sports Arena is a particularly exciting, high profile project. Not only will it benefit students and the local community, but it will boost Leicester’s profile from a sporting, tourism and business investment perspective.”
