Guest lcfc80 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Saw the old LCFC pictures thread and thought some might be interested in this Flikr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisdpyrah/ No idea who's it is so please no over zealous admin delete it, it isn't mine. The fella has taken loads of different photos of around Leicester but he's also tried to document all the pubs in Leicester, quite interesting for some
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 I have a few pictures of Leicester and pubs but they were taken a few years ago so in print rather than digital so can't post on here.
Guest lcfc80 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 i think he tried to get a photo of every pub in the Leicester area, some cracking pics to be fair
Rocket-Ron Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Nice. My Dad gave my wife a book of pictures of old Blaby, she's now taking loads of pictures of the city and villages for (possibly) a book in the future.
lavrentis Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Down the canal near that area I find actually all the derelict buildings quite nice
Jon the Hat Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Some nice pics on there. I had forgotten a few pubs, the Dry Dock I had completely forgotten about.
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Used to take loads of photos. I have though about getting a decent digital camera but don't really fancy paying big money £500 plus. Would have to be under £200. Have some B/W photos of Bow Bridge being dismantled.
MikeyT Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 If you have Facebook, check this page. I love it. Some great images on here. https://www.facebook.com/LeicesterAWalkDownMemoryLane?fref=ts

You can pick up a Canon EOS 350D body for well under a ton, and get some glass too for £200.
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Looking in the Argos catalog now. The DSLR are nice but you then pay extra for lenses and assessories. Also looking at the Bridge cameras. OK but restricted.. There is a EOS 1100D for279.99. 18.55mm lense. With bag and lense 399.I may have enough but I am a bit tight and you never know when something more essential is going to crop up. Would like a decent one though and get back into taking photos. Got my sisters wedding this year. I'm giving her away. Won't be able to take photos myself obviously but there are others that can. Although the thought of a photo of me in a three piece suit dickie bow and top hat puts me off. I'll take a look on EBay. I have a Zenith with lenses but it is too heavy now. What sort of weight is the Cannon?

What sort of weight is the Cannon? Depends which one you get. I have a 500D which I find pretty light. Plenty here know more about it than me. Pop into the photography thread and ask. You need to hold one before you buy. A quick look on ebay - you can get the 500D with the 18-55 kit lens for around £300 which is way better than the 1100D you mentioned.
Raj Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 I've got a book about Leicester in the past love it...great photos
Webbo Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Bought a Fuji bridge camera from ASDA for 1 of our daughters this Xmas around £90. Takes cracking pictures.
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Bought a Fuji bridge camera from ASDA for 1 of our daughters this Xmas around £90. Takes cracking pictures. Is anything lost with not having interchangable lenses? What about close ups (micro)?

What sort of weight is the Cannon? If you go the DSLR route you are buying into a system - Canon (or third party Canon fit lenses). What do you want to photograph - People, street, landscape, close ups etc...... A DSLR Will only perform according to the lens you use, I.E a true Macro lens will give you a reproduction ratio of 1:1 or greater, so these compacts and bridge cameras are not true Macro, just a 'bit of a close up type of lens'. You wouldn't use a Macro lens for landscapes. A decent Landscape lens will not give close focusing or 1:1 ratio so is pretty rubbish for Macro... It can be very expensive to buy into DSLR if you don't really need one. Also look at mirrorless cameras (the only affordable competitor to the DSLR) if you are serious about photography. To be honest, if you just want to print small (10x8) pics or upload to a pc, then most compacts/bridge cameras will suffice. Things like battery life etc are more important then. Phew... sorry it's a bit long winded, I was only planning to write a line or two...
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 I have taken close ups in the past but on't really know what I'll be using a new one for. Possibly just general. I was into it once. Even developed B/W an went night school. I have a small compact a Nikon an my phone but just thought about trying to revitalise my interest. I may go for a Bridge or a better compact. The lenses and flashes for the DSLR cost as much as the camera and I am not ready for specialised photography. I know a couple of people that are into it. One bloke does a bit of teaching on the subject. Name of Andy williams an has been all over the place. Last year he went South America an took some great photos but has also too good ones with his phone.
Webbo Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Is anything lost with not having interchangable lenses? What about close ups (micro)? Doesn't look as if they do it anymore, at lease not at that price. They have got this one though; The Polaroid iS2132 16-Megapixel Digital Still Bridge Camera - White Price:£79.00 http://direct.asda.com/The-Polaroid-iS2132-16-Megapixel-Digital-Still-Bridge-Camera---White/000513291,default,pd.html I can't see any mention of macro facility so I'm not sure. One of our photographers on here might know.
sdb Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 I came across this recently. Personally I find it really fascinating (& creepy). Reminds me of The Shining! Don't know/recognise this part of Leicester so will mean more to a lot of you lot I'm sure. http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/showthread.php?t=27868#.Ut2Oxyg4mL0 (not exactly Leicester at it's finest if I got your hopes up)

shasse Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Did a Fire Service exercise in the old abandoned Leicester International hotel on humberstone gate. Place was a mess like those photo's. Exercise started at 8 and finished just after midnight... no electricity... pitch black and fully smoke logged top to bottom (artificial) We placed 18 dummies to be rescued. Freaky as hell for the isolated breathing apparatus teams, the shining was mentioned. Plus running it, and for safety, the instructors had infra red cameras, watching crews search and chucking the odd bit of broken furniture about to make noise got them cooking. Abandoned hotels are eerie places. They did find all the dummies eventually - took four hours though.
