Voll Blau Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 Genoa's derby with Sampdoria next Sunday is being boycotted by supporters' groups on both sides because of the early kick-off time. The match at Stadio Luigi Ferraris is kicking off at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT) on 2 February so that it can be shown live on television. "To play the derby at 12:30 is an atrocious decision," wrote Genoa's ultras, their hardcore fans. Sampdoria's Ultras Tito Cucchiaroni said: "A derby at 12:30 is an insult." Derby della It added: "The Genoa derby is historically low on technical quality. The value of the derby is the atmosphere that has few equals in the world and it's this that the television is selling. "We won't accept this outrage. We believe that we are the stars of this show, so how much will the show be worth without the fans? We'll know at 14:15 on Sunday, 2 February, because we won't be going." As well as the ultras, the Associazione Club Genoani, a group covering 182 worldwide Genoa supporters clubs, has also called for a boycott. Genoa are technically the home team, although both sides play their home matches at the stadium. A Sampdoria spokesman said: "If the football league decides that we're playing at 12:30 on 2 February then we're playing at 12:30 on 2 February and that's all there is to it." In 2010, Parma fans protested an early kick-off with Roma by bringing packed lunches to the match. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25885920 Fair play to them. You have to admire the attitude they have on the continent.
Stadt Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 It's a shame something like that couldn't be organised here, the dedication if fans abroad is far greater.
purpleronnie Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 The usual response to boycotting is 'It won't achieve anything', 'It's punishing the players', 'I want to support my team' etc etc... We just don't do protests very well. And let's face it out of all the footballing countries we have the most to protest about.
Jordan Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 I would have a lot more empathy with the supporters if they didn't come out with that "we are the stars of the show" nonsense. What a bunch of divas.
Kitchandro Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 I would have a lot more empathy with the supporters if they didn't come out with that "we are the stars of the show" nonsense. What a bunch of divas. TBF though, isn't that what we should be like? Let's be honest, these fvcking nutcases passionately get behind their team every match. If our fans had that attitude I'm convinced it would become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Fans should be arrogant about their team and support. I always think our fans would be louder if we stopped talking about ourselves as if we were some average club with average fans. I get the feeling some of our fans turn up to matches thinking 'what's the point, we're never going to have support like other clubs etc'. Look at the Man City match. Our fans left the match going on about how good their fans were. And then, we copy one of their chants for our new players. How often do we do that? Copy other groups of fans because we want to be like them, instead of being individual. To me, some of our (younger) fans revere other clubs and their fans too much. They strike me as people who have a second team in the Premiership.

We used to have excellent support but for some reason I get the feeling we'll never have what we had in the 90's, at home anyway we do still have our moments away. And that's probably just a direct result of 10 seasons outside the top flight!
Dan Posted 25 January 2014 Posted 25 January 2014 Agree with Kitchandro. We're certainly not on our own but it truly amazes me when you get people on here tossing over another clubs' support without any proper efforts to improve our own.
purpleronnie Posted 2 February 2014 Posted 2 February 2014 Guess it worked. The Genoa derby has been moved to Monday evening (1945 GMT) after both Genoa and Sampdoria fans threatened to boycott the match in anger over the original early kickoff time of 1230 CET on Sunday (1130 GMT), the club said on Twitter.
