Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 And you are certain of that because? And paraguay are no mugs - bear in mind they won their group in the last world cup, held italy to a 1-1 draw, got to the quarters and only just lost to Spain. Stranger things have happened - e.g. Greece winning the euros. Your arrogance and ignorance is outstanding. Well they've only lost 3 games in all competitions in the last 3 years and have arguably one of the worlds greatest ever players in their ranks (Messi). England meanwhile have lost 2 of their last 3 games, just scraped a win vs Denmark and arguably their best player hasn't really shone or looked world class in many a year (Rooney) Because there is no qualification for the Copa America. Paraguay didn't even qualify for the World Cup this year even with the majority of South American teams qualifying. Argentina only got to the quarter-finals of the 2011 Copa America on home soil. England have only lost one competitive game in four years, beat Spain, Brazil and Italy and went to the Maracana and came back undefeated.

Assume there was - would Greece qualify past teams like Columbia and Chile? Or to level it out - assume Paraguay and Greece qualify for a tournament - who does better (clue - it's Paraguay) One could argue that's because the standard of the South American sides are better than of the European sides. Very optimistic spin but England were woeful in euro 2012 and have been bang average for quite a while,
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 If Greece were to play Paraguay at the World Cup it would probably be a draw. England are way above average. An average European team is someone like Hungary.
The Doctor Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Which is why Paraguay have won whenever facing Greece then? Whatever you judge average as being, England have not been a world force for quite a while and only the most deluded of patriots would still argue England to be world class.
Jimothy Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 Add that to the fact that Italy and France both totally failed to turn up and failed to beat the likes of South Africa and New Zealand, it sort of makes your point totally irrelevant Woah woah woah. I agree PotM is talking out his arse about certain things, but what's the above got to do with anything? I don't think England particularly "turned up" at the last World Cup either. We failed to beat Algeria and put on a pathetic display v Germany. We're no world beaters but we're better than our showing 4 years ago. Don't see why Italy and France can be excused their poor showing in 2010, whilst England are just labelled poor for theirs.
Manwell Pablo Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 Paraguay got the final of the 2011 Copa America. They wouldn't even be able to qualify for the Euros. Okay maybe top 5% is the creme de la creme. They'd easily with a top seeding you prat.

You've missed the point, I'm clearly not excusing them, the point I am making is doing better than them wasn't very difficult.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 They'd easily with a top seeding you prat. And why would they have a top seeding?
Manwell Pablo Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 And why would they have a top seeding? Because your comparing them to teams who get the luxury of a top seeding. And in the time frame your talking (just after WC 2010) they'd probably be deserving on one on merit due to their ranking off the back of their World Cup exploits.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 Even with top seeding I'm not sure they'd qualify (well they would now with 24 teams) Say they got France, Belgium, Sweden or Ukraine as second seeds.
Manwell Pablo Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 Even with top seeding I'm not sure they'd qualify (well they would now with 24 teams) Say they got France, Belgium, Sweden or Ukraine as second seeds. in the time period we re talking (2010) about they'd have had little trouble. With any of them. Now they probably would, but we aren't talking about a top South American side anymore. We're talking about the side the finished bottom of South American qualifying.
MC Prussian Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 If Greece were to play Paraguay at the World Cup it would probably be a draw. England are way above average. An average European team is someone like Hungary. Is this "what if...?" time? If Greece played Paraguay in the World Cup, it could go either way. It's all hypothetical! Hungary are currently slightly above-average for European standards (and on the rise).
MC Prussian Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 Paraguay got the final of the 2011 Copa America. They wouldn't even be able to qualify for the Euros. Okay maybe top 5% is the creme de la creme. I think you will find it's mainly down to Paraguay being a South American team.
oxford blue Posted 28 March 2014 Author Posted 28 March 2014 Rather like a good pub conversation, it's amazing how the subject has changed. I started this thread criticising the FA's appointments and it seems to be drawing to a close discussing the merits of Paraguayan football! (Interesting to follow, none the less.)
